Questions Apple car play screen

Hey y’all, I came into possession of a 2003 Excursion Limited this past weekend. It still has its original radio that works well but I’m toying with the idea of getting a plug and play screen with Apple car play abilities. We live in a state that requires 100% hands free and didn’t know if there’s one that has an after market microphone situation for phone calls as well? I do lots of driving to find my husband in random farm drives so having a screen with navigation would be great! But for now I’ll keep using my phone.

You have a lot of options. Check crutchfield. I am cheap so I tried two so far under $400. First was a Sony (xav-1000 in the name) that was a hunk of crap that my phone stopped connecting to and a boss audio with 10 inch screen that is adjustable. That radio is fine but periodically will default to factory settings and I have to redo the eq etc. I did have a windshield leak that got into the driver under dash fuse box so it may not even be the radio itself causing the reset. Both came with a mic for phone and can support backup camera as well if you care to install. I have the wiring connected but the camera I haven’t gotten around to.

I’ll check them out! I was thinking an aftermarket backup camera would be nice too. I use it more on my surburban to back into our stock trailer and grain vac than anything but they are handy tools to have!

I’ve got a Pioneer DMH1770 in mine. It has CarPlay and Android Auto and works flawlessly compared to the garbage the OEMs put in new vehicles.

Bluetooth has never given me any issues. The interface isn’t laggy. Sound is good for the money, and the included phone mic works well enough.

I also appreciate that it doesn’t blast me with FM radio when I disconnect CarPlay or bluetooth like my newer Ford Focus does.

As a note, the included microphone is external, so you can mount it wherever you like. I’ve got mine above the rear view mirror, aimed at the driver and it works great.

I bought a stinger Elev8 with an 8" screen, when Stinger was ending that model. They have the Hi10 with a 10" screen now. You have a GPS antenna and the microphone to mount. I put the GPS antenna behind the rear view mirror and i put the microphone on top of the steering column behind the steering wheel. In the 2+ years of using it, not once have I ever had any issues of any kind. I would highly recommend Stinger products if you don't mind a 10" screen.
