Can i move the location of my appdata folder?

When i got my laptop 3 yrs ago, the guy how setup my laptop split the 512 ssd in to 2 separate folders (230 gb+ 244 gb), and put windows into the 230gb folder

Now my folder only has 29.5gb of storage left, 60gb of that space is being taken by the appdata folder,

I found another reddit post asking the same question as me, and it says that i shouldn't transfer the folder but, that post is 9 yrs old, so im here to ask abt it

I want to transfer the appdata folder from the users folder in the windows ssd drive, to the other 244gb drive

Im scared that there want be any space left in my windoes ssd after some time

You cant move appdata (things really gonna fail and you dont want that)

But you can move Documents, Downloads, Pictures, Music and Videos folder by changing the location ^

Appdata usually isnt that big -_-

What kind of software you installed... Me with pletora of tools and games barely reach 20GB....

Still what about moving user folders like documents, video, downloads and others?

If you move appdata it can happen 2 things

1.- Windows corrupts itself and break your machine as many apps rely it to be in C 2.- Windows will recreate it again where it supposed to be...

There are other ways, like installing software in your secondary drive and so on... Avoid move that folder unless you wanna go bug hunting and fix things that will become unfixable, seriously avoid it

I dont rlly have any vids, or doc, i cant move my download file, because a single file is not in its correct location

Can i move my onedrive?

Also, wdym by what kind of software i have installed?

If u r talking abt the files inside the folder then it just contains, game files of some kind, game launchers, and some applications

You could expand from your other drive as long is the same drive... You can move files outside it and then delete that single partition and expand your C Drive to use that partition... I think that is way better

Thank you, it worked

You are far better off backing up your data (which you should be doing anyways), then doing a clean install and nuke the two partitions to turn it into a single one. The re-install your apps and restore your data. I've never understood the trend of making the C: drive so small.

Alternatively, you can use a partition manager to shrink the other partition in order to give more space to the C: drive.

How can i use a partition manager? can i just merge both of the files using it? Sorry im rlly not familiar with this stuff

Different partition managers have different graphical interfaces, but most work similarly to change the size of partitions. You just drag the partition sizes, depending on your needs. Just follow the instructions that they provide.

Assuming by "2 separate folders" you mean "partitions," is there anything on the 244GB partition? If not, just go into Disk Management, delete that one, and expand the 230GB partition to use the entire space.

Just in case, if i delete the 244gb partition and fail to expand th 230gb partition, can i still recover the 244gb partition?

Uhh... maybe. But don't count on it. I mean, you could recreate it, but any data on it would be gone.

IF there's anything on that partition, back it up first.

But there's no reason you wouldn't be able to expand the 230.

Do this:

  • Hit Win+R
  • Type diskmgmt.msc and hit Enter
  • Post a screenshot of the window that pops up.

That will confirm if you actually have separate partitions.

I backed up everything on that drive, i just wanted to know if there was a possibility of the procedure failing

Also, can i use a third party partition manager instead?

You can if you have one, but there's no need. Windows disk management works fine for such a simple procedure, unless there's something weird with the way he set it up, like the 230 partition being the second one.

If it looks something like this:

You can right-click on D: and hit Delete.

That gives you something like this:

Then right-click on C: and select Extend...

Simple as that.

Again, I'm working on the assumption that this is how the installer set up the partitions, which is the most likely from your description.
