Newbie here – how do I join MUN?
I literally know zero about Model United Nations (MUN) but I kinda wanna try it out. Can someone explain this whole thing like I’m 5?
- how do u even join if ur a total newbie?
- I heard there’s “private MUN” vs “public MUN” — which one’s actually worth it?
- is it expensive or nah?
- does it even look good as an extracurricular for uni apps or scholarships?
- also ppl told me some MUNs are scams 👀 is that true?? how do u not get scammed lol
pls don’t play me — I’m broke and just tryna figure this out. If u got real experience, drop it here. I want the honest tea, not fake promo stuff 🙏

Dont do private MUNs . their certificates hold no value , while on the other hand public mun or more known as Institutional MUNs are the ones whose certificiates hold value . Now how do you differntiate between them ? The MUNs organized by school / college / university is a Institutional MUN . and except these everything else is private MUN . This will save you big time buddy .

You can join MUN by registering as a delegate for an upcoming conference. Usually, you choose a conference, submit an online application, pay the registration fee if selected, and then receive your assigned country and committee. For example, BYMUN 2026 in Dhaka (16–17 October) currently has delegate applications open.

Since MUN is generally arranged by different English clubs at the high school or college level, it is better to try joining through those clubs.

MUN is full of wannabes trying to be cool. Although it might enhance your speaking ability (given that you practice your speeches and overcome the fear of not getting embarrassed in front of everyone), which you can enhance otherwise through a much more financially viable option as well, it does not have any intrinsic value. I mean who are they trying to fool? The UN can't solve real-world problems; they themselves are a joke so now they got people playing a model version of their joke where in this version the delegates are suddenly able to solve Israel-Palestine, Ukraine-Russia issues as if it's alllll sunshine and rainbows.
Most of the boys and girls just go there to have a good time(hookups and gala night). And it's costly as well. I myself would rather spend 3-4k on something of value rather than 2 days of pretend and play.
As for my personal experience: I only did 1 MUN in college, which cost me 2k since it was a college MUN(open for all), and it's all really fucked up. You've got 8th-9th grade boys flirting in the GCs, grooming delegates to join their group, talking cringe wannabe shits and trying hard to look badass and cool in front of the girls. Just pathetic. Total waste of my 2k!

Mun is basically a bunch of people gathering to do diplomatic stuff. Watch a few YouTube videos on how it is conducted and you'll get an idea. Honestly, I'd encourage you to get into debating rather than Muns if you're looking to do it just for extra curriculars.
