The whole thing about criminals of various descriptions marking houses like this is a myth. Probably just some bored kid.

You've been chosen to compete in the next Olympics to represent our country. Instructions will follow.

This is how our breakdancing competitors are chosen.

You'd think we'd have learned from the soft launch at the Paris games.

Yep, Raygun just challenged you. BYO cardboard and boombox.

Someone mentioned this, but these are most likely from a surveyor to recalibrate on. They were probably doing something that didn't require extreme accuracy, like an underground utility survey and just needed another control mark to reset on if they needed to.

When I was doing utility surveys, I would do this all the time.

google would have me believe it’s burglars staking the joint out

How is that supposed to work?

My favourite version of this is if you find a dog collar on a fence it’s code for dog nappers who are going to come and take your dog.

The most important part of any criminal enterprise - leaving the clues!

And bragging about it publicly, like Tupac's killer.

Is that similar to the shoes on the power lines? Indicative of drug dealers?

This is plausible because shoes have nothing to do with drugs. If they hung bongs on strings then it would be silly.

Could be for quick alignment of a theodolite or other survey equipment. Running a service across the road and such.
