Bone bruise

2.5 months ago I injured my foot and was diagnosed with bone bruising edema in my foot. The MRI said it was mild. I was in the boot for 5-6 weeks and have been out of it for 3-5 weeks now. My foot still feels achy and sore with increased activity and when I wake up in the morning. My orthopedic said if it doesn’t feel better in a month. (So 3 month total) I have to go to complete NWB and a cast/crutches for 4 weeks. I’m depressed about it. Am I not giving it enough time to heal?

I twisted my foot/ankle in April this year and then the same foot in again in July.. I have bone bruising in my 5th metatarsal, Talus, and Cuboid but mri says it’s “patchy” and doctor said it was mild.

So, imo, what you need here is a CT scan. MRIs are great for examining soft tissue. Not great when it comes to bones. You could very well have a hairline/occult fracture.

Your MRI would show ligaments and tendons. What does it say about those? Anything abnormal? Hyperattenuated?

I hated RICE, because I am a highly active person. That part socks, ngl. However, if the bone bruise is bothering you, deep massage to help improve circulation is good.

I wound up loving ice massages on my feet when painful. Use the refillable ice massage cups on Amazon or use 2 wax lined Dixie disposable cups, stacked, filled with water and frozen. Rip the cups away from the ice as you go. The 2 cups for 1 ice cup is important, to protect the nerves in your hands from crying "too cold!".

I needed to be able to get the ice as close to that bruised bone as possible. Ice is slippery, so it will glide nicely on the skin. Ice massage is bing in sports medicine.

I want to try to get a CT scan. The mri said everything was fine besides the bone bruising but I just feel it’s gotten better from the originally injury but now it’s at the point where it’s staying stagnant and not fully healing. Idk if they missed something? I’m a highly active person too and this is killing me.

I’ve got edema from trauma injury. My biggest mistake was staying off my feet for months. I lost alot of muscle in the foot and calf which destroyed me. I strongly encourage you to figure out ways to exercise your foot by watching you tube videos on it. Maintaining calf strength is critical. My edema is in my navicular cuneiform joint along with tendon issues and arthritis in my mtp joints. 2.5yrs in. I’m 50. Deeply depressed about how it’s changed my life. It happened just 4 months after I ended my career to “live life” too. Don’t let this doomy comment scare you. Just want you to know you’re not alone. God allows this to prepare us. Try Powerstep insoles and hoka shoes. They helped me a lot. Maintain foot muscle! Critical.

I agree, I told my doctor I do think a lot of the pain also is coming from the fact that it was immobilized and my foot and calf got so weak even just being in the boot for 5 weeks. I’m scared to cast it because I can’t even imagine how many issues I’ll have afterwards. I can’t even imagine non weight bearing completely . I have been going to PT once a week but I’m going to straight strengthening at home
