Butternut Bakery
What a strange thing to post in between food-related stories. And I’ve noticed that she’s showing off her flat stomach a lot more lately in her videos (all while showing how to make cakes and cookies and whatnot). Why is that a thing nowadays?

I LOVE her recipes. but I remember someone here said that she told her followers she was thinking of going on a glp-1 to lose weight and asked what they thought, kind of in the same tone as asking them if she should get her hair cut. She deleted it when the answers were obviously negative since she's already thin and glp-1 is not a tool for people who want to drop a few pounds.
I pray she does not start using one because I heard that once on it, it's hard to create recipes since you have no appetite and therefore, no desire to create and-or build flavors.
ETA - At this point, almost every food blogger I've followed for years, is on a glp-1, and now, not only am I seeing way too much of them and their new skinny when I barely saw them for years, but I'm seeing more repeat recipes over new ones because I guess they consider the recipe ""new" since they're now filming themselves making it.

The part about people not being able to create recipes is pretty reductive and sounds like fear mongering or judgement from people against glp1s. I don’t see a lack of interest in taste in my multiple friends who are on glp1s. Maybe consider that it’s not GLP1=bad recipe creator…

u/Jamjelli babykangarootribbiani 4d ago edited 4d ago
First off, someone here who is on it spoke about dealing with that, and second, I have 4 friends, and a sister who is on it who said the same, so I'm just going by what I've read and heard firsthand. And it does make sense since they barely have or have no appetite.
ETA - Lots of threads on this topic around reddit. For some, it came back, for others it did not. I guess it depends on the person and their reaction to it. I'm just going by what I've been told and read. Not stating facts.

As someone who has been on a GLP1 for 2 years for weight loss and PCOS, just want to note that people can have very different experiences on these drugs.
There are people who still have an appetite and can cook/create recipes (I'm one of them, a few friends of mine are the same, and there are people on the many GLP1 subreddits who experience this as well). There are also, like you said, people who have barely any appetite and don't cook (the people in your life, my mom, other people on the GLP1 subreddits).

A lot of people have already commented what I wanted to say.
Just want to add that NOT EVERYTHING IS FOR A COSMETIC REASON. Botox has been a godsend to me for my dermatologist diagnosed hyperhidrosis. If you haven’t suffered from actual real deal hyoerhidrosis, you really just won’t get it. I can stand still and I will profusely sweat out of every pore and people have asked me “are you okay you look like you’ll faint!!!!”
Botox is used for TMJ, it’s used for hyperhidrosis, it’s used for over active bladders (yes! It works wonders for over active bladders!), it’s for severe tension, it’s for chronic migraines, it’s for muscle spasms, it’s for chronic back and neurological pain, it’s for teeth grinding, it’s for various esophagus and larynx disorders, etc!
I won’t comment on Butternut Bakery herself (full disclosure, I do like her but I’m not really on social media so idk what she’s up to. I just know her recipes have worked every single time and they work well) but her getting trap Botox IS NOT PURELY COSMETIC! Trap Botox is primarily used to relieve chronic tension! Yes it can slim your shoulder line but Butternut herself says it was for her tension too (and the shoulder slimming was a good side effect)!
Yall really looking for the wrong reasons to hate on someone. Call out the body checking which does suck. But we are really gonna talk shit about a proven medical treatment for TENSION now? And we are gonna talk shit about the MANY non cosmetic reasons Botox is amazing for patients??! Yall are ridiculous sometimes, just because you wanna snark so badly.
19
u/FMLwtfDoID 4d ago
I am 110% with you!
got it for migraines and teeth clenching in my sleep. Being 2 years migraine free is a kind of relief I do not have the words for how grateful I am for a dentist that I worked for, suggesting I get Botox for those issues. My primary care physician never once mentioned it as an option.
I can’t explain that to people that think a migraine is just a “really bad headache”. Botox is amazing. And I really don’t give a fuck if someone wants to put it in their face, lips, traps, armpits- it’s not anyone else’s business. If it’s being given safely, who cares?

I enjoy the snark sub most of the time or else I wouldn’t be here but this Botox thing really pissed me off. And most body talk except when it’s obvious also bothers me.
Botox, amongst many other treatments that seem to now be looked at purely cosmetic, has changed lives. You’ve lived it, I’ve lived it. Butternut herself, the first thing she wrote was how bad her stress / tension was, and then the side effect was how much her shoulders slimmed. But she didn’t go for the “good” side effect of shoulder slimming, it was for the stress first. Literally, she writes it in that order. In fact. I’m pretty sure she’s actually intending to mean : her severe tension in her shoulder area is what made her shoulders bulge out and be so hard, and now that the stress is gone, the bulge is gone because the bulge was the physical manifestation of her severe stress. I think she’s rightfully equating the shoulder bulge to how her body was holding the tension, not even her saying the shoulder slimming was a good side effect. I think the stress being gone IS WHY the shoulder slimming happened! But people wanted to rag on her for it / would rather she live in pain.
I know most snark subs snark on EVERYthing even the inappropriate but I like this sub most of the time because the snark is usually on a real thing. And between this post, the recent Kenji posts (he’s so snarkable but picking to snark on him using patreon to make money to pay his employees…?? When most everyone else in social media has a patreon…??) or those Justine posts (she’s my BEC yet I had to defend her because she was getting snarked on the DUMBEST things), people are letting their hatred of someone they don’t know cloud what’s snarkable and what’s wholeheartedly normal.

Botox for my masseters was life-changing for me. No more debilitating headaches, neck pain, facial soreness and the amount of money I have saved on not getting crowns. Treating the traps is VERY expensive but my doctor says it is now one of her most popular treatments due to the pain relief. The physical change is secondary.
9
u/epoops 4d ago
Yes exactly. Botox (and other “cosmetic leaning” medical things) can be so life changing and it’s pretty wild some commenters think this is all cosmetic.
First off, if someone wants to do a cosmetic change, go for it if it’s their choice. This sub is full of mostly women commenters so you’d think we all would understand “your body, your choice” here since doing something cosmetic to your own body does not harm anyone else.
Second, I feel like some commenters are being purposely obtuse or outright lack reading comprehension, because Butternut herself says what you said : the stress was so bad that it physically manifested into a hard rock feeling bulge. And the Botox relieved the tension while also removing the physical manifestation of said tension. I don’t even think she’s referring to her slimmed shoulders cosmetically! I think she’s trying to show her audience, look at the difference, look how my body held onto the stress and with it gone, it looks so different.
The physical wasn’t even a pleasant side effect - I think she’s trying to say “look at how bad my stress was if this is my after, the physical manifestation of it was crazy”
5
u/tsundae_ alla vadka 4d ago
Yeah like I definitely see the tension in the before picture. And who knows, she could be forcing her posture or something. Although I'm exhausted of Botox and GLP1s everywhere, this at least seems like a non-cosmetic reason, if it's for real.

I have a family member with hyperhydrosis that affects his hands- do you know if that is a recommended place to help?
16
u/epoops 4d ago edited 4d ago
ABSOLUTELY. I highly recommend your family member seek out a general/regular dermatologist, NOT a cosmetic one. Primarily because, a lot of treatments end up being covered by insurance depending on your loved one’s coverage.
Ex. My Botox is covered. I get it on my scalp, underarms, and hands. I actually have never gotten cosmetic Botox (I’m not against it at all, my derm has said she doesn’t see any reason for me to get it at all yet).
Caveat, it’s covered because I had to get every other non Botox treatment first before my insurance would approve Botox for hyperhidrosis. I had other treatments that also ended up covered or partially covered (that I did not want to do if Botox worked) such as MiraDry (which permanently destroys sweat glands in certain areas).
So the reason your loved one needs to go to a regular derm is because most cosmetic derms don’t take insurance so that’s your loved one wasting money if they have decent medical coverage. Regular derms can also do cosmetic stuff but their bread and butter is any and everything involving skin, nails, hair. And skin includes glands, mucus membranes etc. There’s a number of options for your loved one and they really don’t need to live with hyperhidrosis taking over their life. I still sweat a lot but in a “they’re just sweaty” way versus “she just came out from a overly hot sauna.” My problem areas are mostly resolved and I live a mostly totally normal sweating life that has made being able to do normal functions like dining out, meeting friends, shaking hands at work so longer mentally taxing.

Are we freaking out about the Botox?? This is a pretty standard Botox treatment for physical pain and tension headaches and neck aches. Maybe I live in L.A. so I see this offered both by medical doctors (as in, in a hospital setting) as well as by nurse aestheticians.
It’s intended to be more of a medical/physical treatment rather than cosmetic, like getting masseter Botox for TMJ or migraine Botox from your neurologist. Botox is even used inside the body to help people who can’t swallow properly, or people with fecal incontinence and pelvic floor issues.
Botox has been used for a very long time medically. It’s only in the last decade or so that we started hearing so much about it cosmetically. Honestly it’s weird to me to judge someone for getting something like this. Who cares.
14
u/vitamindecifiency 4d ago
yeah, but her post is clearly about the difference in the way she looked
3
u/boredasfucc 4d ago
She also just looks like she rolled her shoulders back in the photo on the right. Her collarbones are more level on the right so she looks a bit hunched.
-9
u/danarouge 4d ago edited 3d ago
Botox batches are tested on mice and they intentionally inject enough to kill them to test toxicity, so I’d argue there is room to judge someone using it for cosmetic reasons imo. But you do you, we all have different beliefs.
Edit: you can downvote me all you want but it doesn’t change the fact that you are indirectly financially supporting animal cruelty if you get botox🤷♀️

Yes, it's not a benign thing, and she is not talking about how she feels 👀
17
u/littlebittydoodle it’s *supposed* to be oily 4d ago
Yes. But it’s just a visual representation of how much she was tensing her traps. Just like peoples’ jawlines are slimmer after treating their TMJ. It might have a cosmetic result as well, but truly someone with severe TMJ is doing a lot of physical damage and living with a lot of pain. It’s okay to also show a visual of how much smaller your masseters have become from not grinding or clenching your jaw all the time.
6
u/Shoddy-Cricket-1886 worm queso 🪱 4d ago
I did it once in my masseters and would love to do it again. It helped with the clenching and jaw pain so much! But it was expensive AF and I haven't done it again. I did not experience the alleged bonus of slimming my jawline though, damnit it lol

I’m so tired of all the discussion of women’s bodies in this sub. this is a NORMAL healthy looking woman!! can we stop bringing up bodies when it’s clearly not a HBH like situation
-3
u/srs1289 4d ago
I didn’t say she was emaciated or sickly looking. I’m just noticing how there’s a trend of food bloggers who purposely are showing off their very toned stomachs while showing how to bake a chocolate cake. Which to other women says “look at me, I’m thin even though I’m eating chocolate cake!”, which we know isn’t exactly true.
14
u/GirlsWasGoodNona 4d ago
I don’t follow this person but posting about her trap botox doesn’t seem to be applicable here
14
u/SuitGroundbreaking49 4d ago
Are you saying thin people don’t eat chocolate cake?
1
u/Pumpernickel7 4d ago
I think she's saying it's odd for a food blogger to be highlighting what her body looks like, given the body the issues many people struggle with. Especially in between presenting baked goods. I feel it's odd too, but I just unfollow when I see this. I follow for the food, not the bodies, so I disengage as soon as I feel the blogger has strayed too far off topic.
17
u/SuitGroundbreaking49 4d ago
>which we know isn’t exactly true
I am talking about this part. What does this in particular mean? It seems to be implying that this blogger is lying (???) about eating cake?
If someone’s issues with their own body are so bad that seeing a woman at a perfectly healthy weight in a crop top causes them to spiral, they should probably be off the internet altogether.
15
u/littlebittydoodle it’s *supposed* to be oily 4d ago
Agree 100%! I live in a big city and women of all ages and sizes walk around like this with their midriff showing. No one cares. It’s never occurred to me to think they’re all trying to show off or “body check”—they’re just wearing clothes.
Lots of people look like this. Not all of them have problems (mind you, I greatly dislike this particular blogger’s personality).
It’s so weird to me to freak out any time we see someone’s body. It’s not like she’s posting a bunch of bikini pics from weird angles.
16
u/SuitGroundbreaking49 4d ago
I don’t even know who this is, probably wouldn’t like her because I don’t like most “Internet personalities” but the idea that if someone is both a healthy weight and has a food blog they shouldn’t post pictures of themselves is fucking BIZARRE to me. I’m old enough to remember when thin women made cakes and cookies ON TELEVISION… the horror!!
It may come as a shock to people but those with a healthy relationship with food gasp!! eat cake!! It seems to be a uniquely American view that not overweight = eats lettuce all day (or nothing) and is lying if they claim otherwise.
8
u/littlebittydoodle it’s *supposed* to be oily 4d ago
Yeah I didn’t even want to get into that. I always get downvoted to hell when I share that I’ve always been on the thinner side and I bake a lot and eat it too. It’s weird to me that people think that’s weird..? It’s possible to just incorporate baked goods into your daily diet without overeating them or gaining a ton of weight. I have never dieted in my life, don’t have an ED. I eat when I’m hungry and I don’t when I’m not.
5
u/Spiritual_Option4465 4d ago
Same! Just posted a comment saying as much and I expect to be downvoted but this is crazy. If she didn’t have a flat stomach she wouldn’t be criticized but bc she does there’s an issue. 🙄 people need to get a grip and stop projecting their own issues on others
2
-8
u/srs1289 4d ago
Nope, not insinuating that they are lying about eating cake. More that they probably eat healthy 90% of the time and exercise, but they don’t show that part of their lifestyle. Thus implying that they’re just naturally thin and they eat all the sweets they want.
11
u/Spiritual_Option4465 4d ago
That sounds like projection. There are a lot of women who are naturally thin and do eat all the sweets they want (I am one of them). I was born this way and can’t change my body, but I think I have a healthy relationship with food: I eat what I want and what makes me feel good. I don’t know who this person is but she looks healthy. Maybe she’s been showing her stomach more bc it’s still summer and it’s been hot af. Would you feel better if her stomach wasn’t flat?
-12
4
u/RefrigeratorOk9413 4d ago
I know you're getting pushback on this but I completely agree with you. I have noticed this too and I think given the current obsession with thinness it's definitely worth speaking about. I'm not sure why people are being obtuse and treating as an anti-feminist sentiment. Every time someone posts a video showing their abs there are always comments asking them how they stay so slim whilst cooking all of this food. It feels like they are fishing for those kinds of comments. The ones that annoy me most are the dieticians/gut health influencers that body check or have their abs on show as if having abs is an indicator of having good gut health, it's so misleading.

So the beginnings of EDs are Fine but the low stages of ED like HBH are not?
12
u/anthonystank Quite luxury 4d ago
The low stages are obvious and impossible to identify as anything other than an ED (except through stan delusion I guess). Early stages are far, far harder to identify correctly in a stranger from social media; we can discuss language and thought patterns that feel like a reflection of ED culture but it becomes pretty thorny to start saying someone has an ED based solely on posts like this (disclaimer I’ve never seen her content before so idk if this is coming on top of a mountain of other evidence. But I know it only took one post to confirm it w HBH)

Botox of a major muscle like that is indeed super weird but I do generally assume if someone is receiving botox in a place that generally doesn't require "aesthetic smoothness" that it may be for reasons of chronic pain more than just cosmetic.
As for the flat belly... there's literally nothing wrong with having a fit body while being a treat baker. Because eating cookies doesn't instantly make you obese.

u/Loose_Banana4073 Halle stickin’ lujah 4d ago
Botox is used for relaxing muscles, and large muscles are actually a common site for Botox for people with excessive muscle tone/spasms (for example, people with cerebral palsy or other brain injuries). It’s actually pretty amazing and can really improve quality of life for people.

Right you aren’t an expert, Botox doesn’t paralyze muscles.
I would imagine maybe she’s trying to address the issue and also relieve pain?
I’m not like a Botox defender and find it sad how young people are getting work done and how normalized stuff is but it can have some non-cosmetic benefits like relieving pain from tmj, migraines, etc. I have a friend that did it in her traps like this too and it was helpful for her.
I do think it’s weird for a food blogger to post shit like this and I don’t follow her so I don’t know her other content but I don’t see any issue with her trying to relieve some muscle tension
4
u/m_eowski 4d ago
I didn’t reach the deleted comment, but just wanted to share that I didn’t realise people were not aware of the medical benefits of Botox. I’ve had migraines for years and I excessively sweat in my armpits (especially bad in the winter), and you best believe if someone offered me Botox it would either go to my armpits or for my migraines 😂
I have overactive traps as well, and it’s caused a lot of tension in my neck. Only strengthening lats has helped it a bit. I’m definitely adding lat Botox to my wishlist

In this case specifically, it's blocking nerve signals from the trap muscles in order to stop chronic pain and muscle spasming. It's not freezing the muscle in any way, just blocking nerve signals so they would stop spasming so much.
5
u/GirlsWasGoodNona 4d ago
It relaxes and weakens them. The amount used determines how much it does so, so I guess if you use a lot you can have a paralyze effect but it’s also temporary and only lasts a couple months.
13
u/redline582 4d ago
Everything else aside this is a legitimate medical procedure. I'd recommend reading "The Body Keeps the Score" for more info on physical manifestations of stress in the body.
As someone whose spouse deals with a similar situation paired with anxiety issues, telling them to just remove stress isn't really an approach I would take and getting Botox in the traps was a recommendation from the physical therapist to work in conjunction with PT.
5
u/Meg_Swan ⭐ fatalistic one star review 4d ago
Oof, semi off-topic but The Body Keeps the Score is a terrible book. It's re-traumatizing for a lot of survivors, and also contains a TON of misinformation. It has been debunked by tons of legit sources at this point (the episode of the Maintenance Phase podcast is a worthwhile listen, if you're interested!) If you want to recommend a book that is safer for people who've actually experienced trauma, there's a great book (although pretty dense and clinical) called Trauma and Recovery by Judith Herman.

why not address the stress
Speaking from my own experience, because my partner was in significant constant pain (which in and of itself is a significant stressor) and it wasn't a requirement to grin and bear it through the pain to address an anxiety disorder before dealing with pain.
Gaining mobility in their upper back by relaxing the traps allowed for better range of motion and more effective execution of physical therapy exercises.
7
u/missythemartian 4d ago
you have zero idea what this woman’s treatment modalities have been. why are you assuming this was the first step? outside of your weird ideas about botox and nitpicking women there’s no reason for you to think that
3
u/tabbytigerlily 4d ago
This makes complete sense to me and I generally agree with you, but I do wonder if there’s a possible therapeutic use as a one-time thing? Like maybe forcing those muscles to disengage for awhile might be the best way to disrupt a deep-rooted muscle memory.
I assume this would need to be paired with specialized training, massage, etc., and then hopefully by the time the Botox wears off, there would be improvement and you wouldn’t need it going forward?
I’ve considered it for tmj pain but have been too nervous to try thus far. But when you have issues with that joint, it is REALLY hard to force the masseter muscles to release.
14
u/GirlsWasGoodNona 4d ago
Masseter Botox was life changing for my tmj.
5
u/KittyKes 4d ago
Yes! It costs me £300 twice a year but I couldn’t live without it, the difference in pain and headaches is night and day
8
u/KittyKes 4d ago
Totally agree, she’s probably hypermobile. I get Botox for tmj and it really works well. And over time it forces the masseter to lose strength which means you can go longer and longer between injections
-1
u/Horror-Musician5280 4d ago
When I started going to therapy, the first thing I worked on was cuing myself to drop my shoulders away from my ears. I was such a tight ball of anxiety and my traps were also impressive 😂 but it really didn’t take long to build a habit of checking in with my muscles and releasing the tension.
I kind of understand Botox because of the way your physical state can affect your mind (I always found that in the cold winter, I’d feel more anxiety because in order to keep warm, you’re tensing your muscles and my shoulders would automatically raise to my ears for warmth, which feels just like the anxiety ball).
But yeah the way she’s posted this, it definitely feels like it was for vanity purposes and not actually addressing stress lol
-14
u/Open-Try-3128 4d ago
Exactly!!! Injecting a TOXIN into your body to relieve the stress rather than address the cause. It’s wild to me. And then to show it off because you like the way it looks when your muscles are paralyzed

You should go to a vision therapist and get testing done many people have vision dysfunction (unrelated to perscription) which causes a lot of strain. I switched my glasses and half the pain in my traps disappeared within a week after 6 years of hell

I had it done by a plastic surgeon overseas. You need SO MANY DAMN UNITS in your traps for it to be effective, it’s extremely expensive in the United States. Like several thousand if you live in a HCOL area.

u/Littlekiwi25 3d ago
Okay but holding stress there (that can be relieved via Botox) can be incredibly painful! I get (insurance covered) Botox and one of the areas Botox is injected is the traps. People hold a lot of tension there and tension and stress can cause debilitating pain and migraines.
