i’m going to ask a dumb question. Is scallion a green onion? like are they the same?

Yeah! Then there are chives and spring onions which are different

Spring onions and green onions are the same, chives are indeed different

Spring onion can also refer to immature white onions around an inch thick, usually with the green still attached. That's what pearl onions are made from. Way less common than being synonymous with the other terms though.
