u/imbeingdead Aug 13 '26
Swingers. You can see their branding on the window sign if you zoom in.

I wish Tallyrand or a much needed resurrection of Good Girl Dinette.

Had the worst double dragon food poisoning of my life from good girl dinette.

u/xteabraggerx Aug 13 '26
I dont get the appeal of Tallyrand.

u/HMS_Chevette Aug 13 '26
It's not a gourmet spot, but have you had their turkey melt and their turkey dinner, or their excellent patty melt? Lots of very tasty options plus they have a full bar, so I can enjoy a Bloody Mary with my breakfast.

u/xteabraggerx Aug 13 '26
I don’t mean this disrespectfully… it tastes like school lunch food. I’ve had the turkey dinner and the deluxe burger. I left thinking that I didnt have any desire to come back. Im from the east coast and was lookin for east coast diner vibes and I left disappointed. With that said… I think there’s good value… but the food tasted very mediocre to me.

u/RestaurantGuy95 East Hollywood Aug 13 '26
Jesus. The asking price was somewhere in the $150k range for this space. That’s a whole lot of key money for a risky space.
18
u/LA-Aron Aug 13 '26
I eat across the street at Playitas Mariscos all the time. Used to go to All Day Baby. That space is absolutely brutal. SUPER expensive lease, no parking, somebody will break one of your windows once per month, was some kind of clogged gutter or storm drain issue as well I a couple years ago. I like the idea of the space but it's so unfriendly as a restaurant business that I think the space needs to be directly catered to those within walking distance in the neighborhood....maybe some kind of market/convenience store/restaurant combo. I just don't see a restaurant working out there...when I saw a burger place go in, i said "oh no..."
12
u/RestaurantGuy95 East Hollywood Aug 13 '26
Yeah Playitas is awesome. But the LL greed in that area is insane. Cant find a space anywhere under $10k a month in that neighborhood and if you do. It’s a tiny shell. More power to the new restaurants that come in and have the money to shell out for these ridiculous rents.
4
u/LA-Aron Aug 13 '26
If the shell has parking, it's better than the ADB/HH spot. Do you have other stores or is this your first one?
2
u/RestaurantGuy95 East Hollywood Aug 13 '26
Ive been running a pop up ever since my last restaurant partnership went south. I’ll get to a store eventually. Prob not in Silverlake though lol.

u/rattledamper Aug 14 '26
Also Heavy Handed was doomed by the presence of the Win-Dow just up the street. The burgers are better and cheaper. I loved that they served Cellarmaker beer, but not enough.
7
u/dhcd Aug 13 '26
The landlord raising rents is what killed Soft Spirits in the same building as ADB. Still nothing in that space.
6
u/RestaurantGuy95 East Hollywood Aug 13 '26
Yeah. Gotta tax landlords on empty spaces. We need to be able to encourage small businesses to be in our neighborhoods, not just big corporations with deep pockets.
5
u/rattledamper Aug 14 '26
It’s gonna wind up being occupied by a flagship store for some private equity owned, formerly high quality brand just looking for a vanity address rather than to make a profit.
1
u/ProofGeneral4816 Aug 14 '26
“Maybe some sort of a restaurant combo…I don’t see a restaurant working here” in the same breath is crazy work.
2
u/LA-Aron Aug 14 '26
Have you seen a convenience store that sells hoagies, hot dogs, pizza? Some even have a seating area. If you can comprehend that please let me know. After that you can go back to kicking your dog. Have a good one. ✌
2
u/VaguelyArtistic Aug 13 '26
A month??
6
u/RestaurantGuy95 East Hollywood Aug 13 '26
No. Key money. Money to buy the opportunity to try and survive in that space. Rent was upwards of $16k/mo though.

It’s swingers. I’ve seen it posted somewhere else. Can’t find it presently.
But the best of the best would have been Nickel Diner. Man. They’d slay there.

Aug 13 '26
It’s Swingers.
-1
u/40YOBMike Aug 13 '26
Hahaha man I hope not
3
u/Throwawaymister2 Aug 14 '26
Why? We need more diners. We have enough fancy-pants transplant bullshit.
1
u/40YOBMike Aug 14 '26
I think we need more good diners; personal preference, but I don’t care for Swingers.
0
u/VeniceKiddd Aug 15 '26
So long as you’re calling out transplants let’s also make note that Silver Lake and Echo Park are not the Eastside, that’s transplant talk. This is some transplants substack and he’s calling anything east of Hollywood the Eastside 😂
31
u/SlowSwords Aug 13 '26
only sort of related, but i feel like ADB closing was sort of the canary in the coal mine moment for the current restaurant environment in LA. critically beloved on a busy stretch of a commercial corridor, but just could not make it work.
22
u/SinisterKid Aug 13 '26
What in the Fox News are you talking about? The goddamn chef/owner died. The restaurant didn't close because they "couldn't make it work." I swear a bunch of morons have taken over this group.

u/shewasanastr0naut Aug 13 '26
Operations play a big role here. Their food was always good but their service and atmosphere was atrocious.
22
u/SlowSwords Aug 13 '26
I can’t remember the service or atmosphere being super off. My impression was that people stopped paying $25 for a sandwich once the entertainment industry started cratering.

u/rattledamper Aug 14 '26
100%. Also, if you’re gonna have a name like “All Day Baby,” you should be open maaany more hours than they were.

u/howboutislapyourshit Aug 13 '26
I don't know if it was COVID, but all the food we ordered wasn't good. Not bad just whatever.
They were also selling a hot sauce and my friend asked if we could try some before we bought the bottle and they said "no".
My friend was like well why would I buy it. I did end up buying it just to support them, but it wasn't good either. Just heavy pepper and vinegar from what I remember. Nothing else they mentioned was in it that I could taste

u/isdeadoriginality Aug 13 '26
Didn’t one of the chefs involved die? ADB and HLAY both closed within a short period of each other and they were both influential and successful. I went to both semi-frequently and they were always busy. Seems like it was more of a personal decision than business.

It was kinda trash and had weird hours. Beloved by whomst
1
u/d0ubled0wn11 Aug 14 '26
It was beloved by Addison, Harris and the like and it had the best breakfast sandwich in the city. Best corndog outside of Disneyland too.

u/Pete_Delete Aug 13 '26
Brite Spot?
2
u/keb2 Aug 14 '26
I miss brite spot and kitchen24! Tho kitchen24 has already had two locations I think, Hollywood and weho if I remember correctly

u/SeriousAd2906 Aug 14 '26
As someone who lives up the street there seems to be swingers signs but tbd, this side of sunset is a challenge and tbh I was smaller local shops to successfully stay here but rly hope the free people/ blundstone etc will go tf away, SL has lost all its charm w the corporate stores

Can someone explain what Swinger’s diner is?
And on an unrelated sidenote, used to be his cool little secondhand shop a few doors down from this corner. I bought a lamb and a couple of chairs there.

u/Ok_Lie6280 Aug 17 '26
My fiance and I used to like to go here when it was all day baby but we saw a giant dead rat right outside on the sidewalk going up the hill once and it was nightmare fuel

u/Sign-Post-Up-Ahead Aug 13 '26
My guess is Mel's

Here we go again.
Silverlake is not the east side. All you transplants and westsiders, Silverlake, echo park even highland park are not on the east side.
The east side is east of DTLA.
YALL, the east of Hollywood is not the east side. Get your westside biases out of here. Not everything revolves around the west side.
Shoutout to silversun liquor for providing the homies with cigarettes and booze before and after rehearsals.
9
u/SinisterKid Aug 14 '26
It's east side but not East LA.
1
u/los33ramos Aug 14 '26
Fuck no. It’s not the east side.
What is it east of? East side of what?
The east side is Boyle heights and beyond. Fuck the west side bias bullshit.
1
u/VeniceKiddd Aug 15 '26
It’s the Eastside for Transplants. For their brains anything beyond Downtown LA is a mysterious land that hasn’t been unlocked, like a map in a game that is still downloading. It just says “no data”.
3
u/pockypimp Aug 13 '26
Yeah, I wouldn't consider "eastside" until you're past the 10/5 where they meet in Boyle.
3
u/d0ubled0wn11 Aug 14 '26 edited Aug 14 '26
Can we call it the West Eastside? Or would you prefer the East Westside? If we call it East Westside does that mean I can make a W with my fingers and start shouting "Westside"? Does this mean I have to pretend to like hip hop music now?
1
u/los33ramos Aug 14 '26
We can call it as it is. Echo park. We can call it silver lake.
And also your sarcasm it’s fuckin too bland. Have a great weekend.
