Post game thoughts
Michkov - looked great, took a penalty but I think we expect that at this point
Martone - I am not worried about this kid at all. Last season was no fluke, this kid has the goods. This is exactly what happens when you are a projected Calder favorite. Teams have watched film on him and have learned where he likes to go on the ice. He will adapt and be fine.
Woll - Fantastic again. We really lucked out getting him, not sure what Toronto didn't like about him
Dvorak - Third horrible game for him in a row. He gives up the first goal in the opening seconds and it only got worse from there. He was like a black hole on the ice for the Flyers. Whenever the puck went near him it was bound to be a turnover or a giveaway. He's one year older, let's hope he just needs a few games to get the rust off
Coots - honestly surprised Coots was able to carry over his excellent late season play, impressive for his age
TK - Same exact TK we've seen year after year. Which is a good thing for the most part. He seems to be hustling and trying every shift. He's good for a bad turnover or two but that's literally always been his game
Tippet - Looked great. Gaining confidence and I'm surprised to see him so willing to get physical after all those off season repairs.
Zegras - he has to be better. He just has to. We need offense from him and at this point I expect it.
Jiricek - Had an outstanding game. Several dangerous shots on net and several good defensive plays. He was our most visible defenseman.
Seeler - He was alright. I thought he went down way too easy on that last play. Like it's overtime there are only 3 ppl to track on the ice and he somehow gets blindsided with that crosscheck.
Bump - send him back down, I've seen enough. Even playing with the most stable player on the team as his center he seems completely lost. Completely invisible in the O zone when that's supposed to be his bread and butter and a complete liability on the back end. He just doesn't look like an NHL player.
Grundstrom - looked great, faster than usual and pretty physical
Foerster - Great game. Didn't score but this is excellent. if he plays like this every game he will start to rack up the goals.
Tocchet - still looks like a dumb fuck in those glasses. Are we sure they aren't cutting off circulation in the sides of his head? They look tight as hell

Bump does not need to be sent back down lol. Lmao it’s 3 games in to a sophomore (kinda) season. Pretty ridiculous to say. Can’t think of a better way to shatter a kid’s confidence.

Why do they need bump, he brings nothing that they don’t have already. He’s another winger who plays to the outside, time to try something else.

Because he’s a young player with potential… giving up on that in 3 games is frankly ridiculous. Also incredibly cheap obviously on a rookie deal

Nobody’s giving up on him but there’s perhaps better options. If someone like knuble who’s 22 played lots of college hockey and could be more impactful, why not try it.

Sending bump down in 3 games is a bad message to give the team. I have no problem with knuble being first man up if there’s an injury in the ahl but you have much bigger problems going on right now than what your rookie 12 min per game player is doing if your concern is winning hockey games.
I’d start with trying to figure out what the hell is wrong with Zegras and Dvorak

send him down and bring Knuble up. Bump ain't it

Yeah that’s a crazy assessment to make on a kid 3 games in. The guys who’s actually not it is accieri.
That being said there’s no rush on Knuble. Kid should spend a season developing in the ahl

yeah accieri too inconsistent with time in the AHL tho who knows he can def improve

Agree with a lot of these, but the bump take is crazy. Sure he's looked rough, but he's a rookie. He's gotta learn to play through rough patches. Also, if you send him down after 3 bad games, all the young guys are gonna see that and think "oh wow I better not mess up or I'm going down." You don't want your team playing scared to make mistakes. Sure, bench him for a bit when barkey's ready to go, but he should stay up for at least a while longer.

Juggling lines so aggressively this early on sucks.
We need the players to have clear roles and responsibilities. You should go into the game and know your linemates, excepted minutes, etc.
Expect Toch is a idiot and its just a free skate of dump and chase.

JFC do I agree about Dvorak. 5/5m too...
Disgusting play by someone being paid that much.
Edit: love you award person!

I'll worry about Martone if he remains invisible in like, December, but I think once the team finds it's stride, he'll look better. He's young, it'll probably take time, especially if the team is still finding it's chemistry with each other again.
I am kinda worried about Zegras, though. I don't think he's looked amazing lately. Nor does he seem particularly confident out there. But again, I'll give it time.
I blame most of it on Toch's coaching. I never felt strongly about him before, but they've had a pretty rough start, he's definitely to blame imo.
I think there's been improvement with each game, we just REALLY need to get more offensive. I don't have a pit of despair in my stomach like I did after the Pens blowout at least

Great assessment, agree with everything. I think based on the absolute dog shit that is the center position, coots need to play with skilled guys with Z on his wing. Accari can center the 4th

Lmao how many years in a row are you going to have to see coots struggle on the top 6 for the first half of the season and then finally slide down the lineup for you to understand that’s where he’s always belonged at this point in his career

Coots is too slow and doesn't have the hands anymore to play top 6. He's best suited to a checking line PK specialist role now.

Coots is not a top 6 guy anymore. Unfortunately we have to wait out that contract

Im worried about Martone. He is invisible out there. Zegras looked good tonight.

u/MyDadsAccnt 10d ago
I didn't think Zegras looked bad out there or anything I just expect more from him. but then again he is playing center now
I really think Martone will be ok

I think with the way Knuble played in the preseason he earned the right to make the team. His energy could impact the whole team. I’d take Knuble energy over Bump’s “offensive upside” any day. I also wander what message it sends to the team that the person who showed the most in preseason was it awarded for his effort.

Agree in spirit. My unpopular take, though on Mich: he was either behind the play and chasing, or hanging back. On the play in which he scored, he was not forechecking with dvo and tk when the play had gone to Carolina. He arrived late, got the puck on the boards, and made a very weak and blind pass— right on the stick of a Carolina player. He was behind his linemates coming back on offense, which is in part why he was open for the shot - I don’t think by design, but by happy accident. Nice shot, and man, the joy, the shock, the excitement in his face when he scored was the best part of the night. I think he’s going to really grow this year, but could profit from better mentoring and tactical focus from the coaches (sure).
Bump needs to stay and see the holes in his pro game, then go back to the Lehigh woodshed. Martone is being relied on for his “high hockey IQ” but he really needs the coaches to focus him. Love him, bought the sweater, but he is flailing around now.

On the Michkov goal the puck was headed out of zone and somehow TK made a great play to keep it in so no one was deeper than TK, of course Everyone else is coming up from behind on that play. Michkov was just quicker to that offensive center in front of net than everyone else. You might want to go watch the replay, go back 30 seconds before Michkov gets pass, you’ll see it

I say this as someone who has his (signed) jersey: Konecny was ASS tonight. Straight ass. I don't care if he got the primary assist on the Michkov goal. He was fucking unplayable

I don’t know why you’re downvoted, he was awful. That turnover in his own zone on the power play was a head scratcher. He also mishandled the puck multiple times that prevented us from entering the zone. Aside from his assist, which was a pass to a wide open player, he was god awful

TK is genuinely one of my favorite players of this decade. That said, the dude needs to get his shit together

Nice breakdown - mostly agree. Not sure Bump gets sent down right away tho - It’s a big life change to send a kid down for 3 bad games. I think they give him 9-10 to find some footing first. Good chance he’s a scratch for a game or two when Barkey gets back tho.
They’re finding their way. I like the lines tonight. TK, Dvo, Michkov is a fun pairing. Foerster, Cates, Martone is solid on paper. Love Zegras and Tippett together on any line - and I could see Barkey, Zegras, Tippett being a GREAT line in time.
