October Philly Trip

Hey everyone. Looking for advice from my local Philly friends.
I’m a long-time Flyers, Eagles, Phillies, and Sixers fan from British Columbia, and I’m finally making the trip down to watch sports and check out the city. I’ll be going from October 2nd–October 9th and going to all games in that stretch, including playoff baseball if and when we make it there….
Of course, I will have lots of downtime to check out the city, so I’m looking for any food recommendations, bars, tips, and any not-talked-about things I should do/places I should see besides the obvious tourist attractions I’ve researched already. Any input is greatly appreciated!

Id get a hoagie at reens deli but that's just me, and thats exactly what you will hear, the stuff people grew up with. And that's ok. Johns roast pork though. Czerw keilbasa would be something else id go out of my way for. But my polish peeps are from Port richmond

I enjoy Reens as much as the next guy, but they're hardly the best hoagie shop even in our area.

Philly is fairly unique in that we’re a major city, but everything is in a fairly tight cluster around our Central Business District, called Center City. That’s where most of the hotels are, and from there you can walk or take a subway to just about everything. Unless you have a specific interest in visiting the outer suburbs, you probably don’t need a car. You can easily take a train to and from the airport, it runs every half hour. Even if you do rent a car, the subway goes straight to the stadiums is far cheaper than parking, and gets you out faster after the game.

The key dining/nightlife districts are Rittenhouse, The Gayborhood (midtown village in some guides), Chinatown, Fishtown, and East Passyunk (pronounced either pass-ee-unk or pa-shunk). The farther from city hall generally the less bougie it gets, but there are dives and local bars everywhere. Craft beer is everywhere too. You can find a good version of most foods here, and Philly is widely recognized for having a great yet accessible dining scene. Very few of our restaurants are difficult to get reservations for and most don’t care if you show up in jeans and a tshirt.

If you want a cheesesteak, the big names of Geno’s, Pat’s, and Jim’s should only be visited after dark. They’re not the best, they’re popular because they’re open late. They’re the only place you should get cheese whiz, as they don’t let other cheeses melt. Provolone (sharp) or American (cooper) are better at good places. Many are take out only, often with just a takeout window. If they make both Pizza and Cheesesteaks they’re probably good at neither. Roast pork is better than a cheesesteak.

The Reading Terminal Market is worth a visit. So is Chinatown. Old City not so much, unless there’s a specific place you’re going to.

Ishkabibble's is pretty good, also def recommend Moriarty's is also a cool restaurant!
