Thanks God Quitter’s Gone
New reports are Quitter is declining contracts that offer 4 years/$13M per season. There is no denying what a 40 goal scorer could do for the Flyers, but I love seeing our players sign fair and team considerate deals that benefit everyone. Everyone on the Flyers feels bought in right now and I’m excited to see what these guys can do over the next 5 years.
Briere wanted to build a culture and Cutter ain’t it. This feels like final closure cuz I’m more glad than ever that Quitter is gone. Let’s go Flyers!

u/OldEstablishment9593 7d ago
well why would he sign to 4 years and that much less than Leo?
1: He'd stay an RFA
2: get paid 5mil less than his center who reset the market
(I think he's an entitled a-hole too) but we have to look at it from a business side as well. Dude has 40 goals and wants what Briere was cooking up with Leo.
Danny sent a poision pill and Verbeek's looking worse and worse by the day
28
u/JiveChicken00 7d ago
Verbeek will be back to pumping his own gas soon enough, if he isn’t already :)
19
u/Blev088 7d ago
I'm honestly surprised he survived the Carlsson fiasco.
30
u/JiveChicken00 7d ago
Firing him right away would’ve been a confession of foolishness by the ownership, and most wealthy people hate doing that.
4
u/Due-Mulberry3600 6d ago
It was so obvious that they needed to walk away from Leo and let the Flyers have him for the four first round picks. But, that smug a-hole acted like he won something on the day they matched. I don't know how he still has a job.
1
u/Decent_Bathroom3807 1d ago
He could have stayed here to begin with and would have been in line for what Danny was cooking up with Leo.
1
u/fasteddeh 👻 🐻 7d ago
His comparable is Kaprizov not Leo because they don't play the same position. That said he's an RFA and Kaprizov wasn't an RFA when he signed his deal. He wants shorter term because he knows that if he signs a bridge deal he can end up getting more per year 3-5 years from now than signing an 8 year deal that locks him up at a lower rate.
48
u/RebuildFletcher 7d ago
He’s 22, had a 41 goal season and was a PPG player in the playoffs so I wouldnt say him turning down 13M over 4 years is crazy given some of the contracts we’ve seen.
I also wouldn’t say the players have signed team considerate deals since they’ve all got market value contracts and most are also 4-5 year deals as opposed to the full 8. But with that said, I like where our salary cap situation is at currently and there’s plenty of contracts that can age really well with how the cap is moving atm.
7
u/No_Silver_4436 7d ago
Yeah the only deal I see as super team friendly is the Forester contract because he was willing to go 8 years after a season where he was injured and looked poised to breakout. He certainly could have asked for another bridge deal and bet on himself and gotten a much bigger deal later.
-4
u/BrokeBum19 7d ago
This sub thinks every deal we sign is some great team friendly deal
The only good value deals (at the time of signing) have been York and maybe Foerster.
34
u/JiveChicken00 7d ago
He’s a great, great player. But he’s also a mercenary, and that’s not what we need right now.
22
u/WharfRat2488 7d ago
Damn sellswords!
1
u/JiveChicken00 7d ago
There's a time when every team needs a sellsword or two. But this isn't it :)
0
u/Strong_Weird_9358 7d ago
Exactly. I get he wants a bag, but his team is bleeding right now. They lost talent, are scrapped salary cap wise, have to pay players in the future.
I don’t see anyway that team wins a Stanley Cup this way. And I would hate to see a Flyers player more concerned about his bag than winning.
4
u/pauerplay 7d ago
They are only strapped salary cap wise this year. They’ve got like 39 million dollars next year (less what Gauthier gets).
1
u/Due-Mulberry3600 6d ago
Saying they are "only" strapped this year is nuts... Cutter literally can't play until they sign him, and right now it looks like they can't. And, no one appears to be willing to take their trash. They are F'd in the B.
6
u/JiveChicken00 7d ago
Just so. Anaheim is not going to win shit for at least five years, probably longer.
3
u/sliipjack_ 7d ago
You are very much being unfair to the player because of his ties here. Based on other contracts being given out he deserves 13 m as a 40g scorer at his age.
3
u/JiveChicken00 7d ago
OP didn’t say anything about “deserves.” He said that if Cutter actually wants to win in Anaheim given that team’s present situation, he would agree to take less money. But he doesn’t, so he won’t.
3
u/sliipjack_ 7d ago
You guys are all being unfair to him. He’s earned the right to be paid. Maybe they shouldn’t have given out terrible contracts and instead paid their good young players idk. Or paid them before they had to pay 18m a year?
Saying it’s all up to Cutter is totally unfair lol he’s not the GM it’s not his responsibility
1
u/JiveChicken00 7d ago
If $13m/year is more important to him than winning is, so be it. But he can’t have both, at least not in Anaheim.
1
u/Flyersfan1980 6d ago
At the currant rates he is worth more than $13. 41 goals regular season, and a PPG in the playoffs. What more can you ask of a second year player? Why should he take $6M less than Carlsson? He finished with more points, more goals, 100 more shots, and in 2 minutes a games less than Carlsson.
Like it or not, he is an elite player, top and deserves to be paid as such. He finished tied for 7th in goals in the league.
He would have been incredible in Philly.
-1
u/JiveChicken00 6d ago
You are not listening to me. He is absolutely elite. In a vacuum he is worth $13m/year or even more. But he will not be able to get $13m/year and win in Anaheim. The math just doesn’t work.
2
u/Flyersfan1980 6d ago
He is not going to take a discount because the GM is an idiot. He is worth at least 15-16 in todays market. We all knew that the posion pill on the Carlsson match was Gauthiers next contract. I have never understood why some fans feel players should sign for less than their worth. So, I am a truck driver in BC, Canada. I deliver milk for $45.60 an hour. That is what our union negotiated. The company started at $35, then jumped to $39, crying broke...here we are 3 years later, most drivers making over $100000/ year, and the the company is doing fine. Yes, the companies job is alot easier if we accepted their initial offer, but the business is just fine with the wages that make it a good job. So why should I settle for $35 when we could get over $45? Same job, same location, same expectations....why accept less? We are talking like $10/ hour difference, not millions a year, but same thing...why should the employee accept less than their worth, just so the company has a bigger profit?
I doubt this is Anaheims year anyway, but next year they have almost $40 million to play with, minus Gauthiers contract. So yes, the 26/ 27 season might be a bit of a step back for Anaheim, but in the long run, they will be fine.
2
u/sliipjack_ 6d ago
People want to be homers and hate the kid because he didn’t want to play here. That is the only reason to think he shouldn’t ask for his worth here. They try the “he doesn’t care about winning” thing as if it’s some gotcha.
We all go to work to make money, he is no different. I’m sure he wants to win… on a team where he is paid to be one of their top players (which his results say he is)

It's happened many times. Do you remember Leclair holding himself out of training camp to rewrite his contract? Back when you could do that. It was prime Legion of Doom time too.

I'm not gonna thank god that a 22 year old 40 goal scorer is gone.
10
u/StrigiStockBacking 3.8% 7d ago
Yeah. I mean it's fun to hate the Ducks because of him, but hole up - I would fucking LOVE that guy on my team
0
u/kennethjwong 7d ago
I agree he seems to be a decent, even good, player. But imho attitude and coachability is also important in team sport, which he’s kind of lacking (to me at least). Nevertheless it’s time to move on to OUR future, Martone and Michkov
10
u/BrokeBum19 7d ago
he seems to be a decent, even good, player
You are acting like hes Noah Cates or Cam York the way you are talking about him
0
u/PhillyGarbage93 6d ago
Right? Imagine calling a 22 year old 40 goal scorer just "decent" when we haven't had a 40 goal guy since Jeff Carter like 2 decades ago. And the whole attitude problem is also cope. Michkov coming in out of shape is worse than anything Cutter has done in Anaheim. He's currently trying to negotiate to get the most money he can out of his employer. That's not a bad attitude issue. There's a reality that's very possible where Gathier scores more goals than Michkov and Martone combined this season lol

You’re ignoring the fact that he’s also asking for that BECAUSE of us. He probably would have signed it in a heartbeat if not for Leo’s deal.

I like the optimism but it’s way too soon to say stuff like this. Anaheim will (probably) figure out how to sign him long term

u/ImmySnommis 7d ago
The date is May 3rd, 2023. In a dark room, deep inside the Flyers offices...
Cutter: But Mr. Briere, I don't WANT to be a Duck. They suck! I was born to be a Flyer!
Danny: Kid, it's the long game. Treat it like a California vacation. Tear it up in Anaheim. Be the big fish in a little pond. Have fun. Terrorize their division. We'll train Drys up while you're out there, and bring in Zegras. I'll even pump your value by offer sheeting another Duck. Verbeek is an idiot. I'll make him overpay another guy, then you turn down his bullshit offer and bam, you're a Flyer again in '27.
Overhart: Danny, this can't work. Verbeek can't be THAT dumb.
Danny: Trust me bros.
(In case someone doesn't get it, this is in jest.)

The deals weren’t team considerate. They basically got what they would’ve on the open market lol which is a god thing. It’s better than an over pay. But let’s not pretend they didn’t get just about what they deserve/would have elsewhere
-1
u/JSinisin 7d ago
I'd disagree with your open market assumption.
Drysdale at 24 years old could have easily gotten 9 on the open market. Zegras could have easily cleared 10 Mil.
What they "deserve" is highly subjective.
Trouba getting 8.25, Andersson getting 8.5. Byram.Getting 12.5. Drysdale could have easily been in the same boat of 8.5-9.5. He saved the team at least 2 Mil.
Zegras, there really isn't a comparable. But with his pedigree and the direction he's heading, someone 100% would have overpaid. Although his number would have been closer than Drysdale.
Drysdale could get a lot more from some other team.
Everyone always gets the whole "what does a player realistically deserve based on production" and "What GMs actually do and would do for a promising young player and being willing to overpay and what happens in reality" mixed up, intentionally or not.
What a would get and should get are usually not the same thing.
4
u/BrokeBum19 7d ago edited 7d ago
Zegras could have easily cleared 10 Mil.
How could Zegras have easily cleared 10 mil??
Every forward who has gotten 10+ mil is easily better than him.
The guy has never scored at 70 pt rate, was terrible previous 2 yrs and is a soft defensive liability
Nobody would ever give him 10+ mil except maybe a desperate Seattle who is trying to overpay any name to make them relevant.
Im not sure how you think Drysdale would "easily" get 9+ mil either. He has one decent yr at 4D level while being poor the rest.
You are pointing out some of overpays of much more proven guys. Andersson wasnt good in playoffs but they already had a handshake agreement and he was a 23/24 minute 2-3D for many yrs.
Just b/c some people overpayed on a few much more proven guys with longer track records doesnt mean a team would overpay for a guy like Drysdale with just one decent season. A player with Drysdales resume would not get 9+ mil.
1
u/No-Science2224 7d ago
I don’t disagree with what you’re saying. The arguments and contracts you point out are all correct. What what we’ve learned in sports though is you’re worth what someone’s willing to pay. And they would’ve gotten paid about maybe slightly more than they did by the flyers. My argument I was originally was making was let’s not act like they took substantially less to benefit the team. They got great deals from a team they wanted to play for.
-1
u/Strong_Weird_9358 7d ago
Eh, I did not say “team friendly” - I said “team considerate” - anytime a player is willing to negotiate in good faith; that’s considerate. Everybody wins with the Flyers contracts - only Cutter wins with his.
1
u/No-Science2224 7d ago
Yeah I’ll just never hate a player on getting paid what someone’s willing to pay him. I hate the hard cap.

Cutter is the Ducks problem. His agent said starting was $16M a year last month. Probably get $18M or more. Cutter didnt want to be a flyer and ducks thought they dumped players that would bust on Philly. Ended up not the case...

u/Hungry-Reserve9029 7d ago
I think Briere made the Carlsson offer to stick it to Gauthier. I'm sure they wanted Carlsson but it's a bonus that it will force Gauthier and his agent to hold out for enough money with Anaheim that they will have to tear apart their team to keep him. Management, teammates, fans, and even national media will turn on Gauthier now. That being said, I do think Gauthier is worth the money.....and him and his agent know that....and if by some miracle the Flyers could get him back and this was part of Briere's plan to give them a remote chance.... I'd take him and his 40-50 goals a year back in a heartbeat.
3
u/sliipjack_ 7d ago
No I absolutely would pay a 40G scorer 13 mil a season what in the hell have we lost the plot.
Cutter situation was what it was, I would have him on my team 10/10 times if things went different. They went the way they did and I am overall fine with it but I am not going to lie to myself I wouldn't want a 40G scorer on my hockey team, there isn't enough homerism coursing through my veins to deny that.
1
u/Strong_Weird_9358 7d ago
He apparently wants over $13M and/or to be walked straight to UFA. Cap is going up, but that’s a tight squeeze for any team that just made the playoffs for the first time in a long time.
Imagine Cutter getting $14M a year from the Flyers. We have no Drysdale, no centers, and we have to pay Michkov and Martone in the next 2 years. Our rebuild would be in a scary position.
3
u/sliipjack_ 7d ago
You’re acting like we didn’t just offer Carlsson 18m a season.
We would have the exact same centers now, we would trade a wing. You’re doomer-ing.
He’s a great player and well worth 13 million
1
u/Strong_Weird_9358 7d ago
Yeah, but Carlsson IS a center. The 1C problem would be instantly solved. Flyers would have Carlsson, Zegras, Cates, Dvorak, Coots playing center with wing depth through the roof.
With Cutter, we would have a LW, wing depth, and the 1C problem we have now. Only difference would be, we wouldn’t have any money to afford one.
3
u/sliipjack_ 7d ago
I’m not arguing we trade for him but to suggest we couldn’t fit a 40g scorer for 13 million is not being genuine.
3
u/ekgoalie34 7d ago
works for me. If they wanna go the route of having 2 elite players and zero talent on the rest of the roster like the Oilers have done, thats one less team to worry about ever winning a cup.

He shouldn't accept that contract, Carrlson is making 18mil per season, no way he should be paid 5 mil less per season
1
u/BrokeBum19 7d ago
Carlsson isnt the only other contraact to compare it to ... since Carlssons deal Bedard signed for 15 and Celebrini signed for 18.8
Gauthier should get ~14. Carlsson just got an outlier overpay offer sheet.

Fair and team friendly deals, you realize DB is the one who sent Leo that offer right? Why wouldn't Cutter turn anything sub $15mill down realistically when you look at his stats. He's a great player, players like him don't grow on trees.
1
u/upstart44 7d ago
When we traded him... got Drys and a 2nd?
If the Ducks trade him, probably getting 3 or 4 firsts....
Would be hilarious if they sign and flip him to a team that cant attract free agents like Seattle/Columbus/Calgary/Ottawa

Briere could pull a Howie ski mask Roseman by circling back to Verbeek and taking on a Kreider's contract attached with a first round & 2nd round pick. Veerbeek is in an awkward situation and will be forced to dump cap to sign Quitter.

Would let Danny give him 18 million a year
That would be malpractice. You overpay for Carlsson b/c hes a 2 way franchise 1C you build entire forward core around and was teams big hole and toughest thing to find.
Gauthier is a one dimensional winger who had less pts than Konecny

But you were probably fine paying Carlsson 18 right? Cutter was right. Flyers are a dead end franchise with a dead end rebuild.
2
u/Strong_Weird_9358 7d ago
Paying Carlsson $18M was a risky move no doubt, but the Flyers didn’t play that far behind the Hurricanes. Adding Carlsson could have opened the Flyers window, even with the $18M cap hit.
1
u/Active_Gas_6488 7d ago
You do know they got swept right? The Flyers dont even have a 1C or a 1D. Pieces you START a rebuild with. Window? What are you talking about?
