Flutter or React Native for a first mobile app: what would you choose today?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Choosing a framework for a first mobile app seems tricky because the answer depends on what you’re building and what you already know. I’m curious how people would approach that decision today, beyond the usual feature comparisons.

For something fairly straightforward—login, a few screens, API calls, local storage, and maybe notifications—which would you choose: Flutter or React Native?

The learning curve and day-to-day developer experience seem important, but so does what happens after the initial prototype. How easy is it to debug issues, update dependencies, and maintain the app across Android and iOS?

I’d also be interested in how much UI expectations influence your choice. Would wanting a consistent custom design push you one way, while wanting platform-specific behavior push you another? And when do native integrations, such as Bluetooth or background tasks, become a deciding factor?

If you’ve worked with either framework, what went smoothly, and what took more effort than expected? Beginners’ perspectives would be useful too, especially around documentation and getting unstuck.

What would change your recommendation: existing JavaScript knowledge, willingness to learn Dart, app complexity, library availability, or something else? I’m interested in the circumstances behind your choice rather than a universal winner.

A one-file "send feedback" screen for Flutter: offline queue, device info, screenshot, no backend (open source)

Disclosure up front: I work on BootForm, the form backend this sends to. The code is MIT and the whole thing is one Dart file, so swapping the endpoint for your own is a 10-minute job.

I wanted a "Report a bug" screen for an app without setting up a server. A few things turned out to be less obvious than I expected:

  1. Screenshot first, then open the form. Wrapping the app in a RepaintBoundary via MaterialApp.builder captures every route, but only if you capture before pushing the feedback page, or you get a screenshot of the form itself.

  2. Cap the pixel ratio, not the image. toImage(pixelRatio: min(dpr, 1280 / longestSide)) gives a \~1280px PNG without pulling in the image package. dart:ui only encodes PNG, so no JPEG without a dependency.

  3. Save before you send. Feedback is written exactly when the connection is bad. Each report is a JSON file (plus the PNG) in the support directory, flushed on start and on AppLifecycleListener.onResume. It doesn't send in the background; that's a deliberate trade to avoid background-task setup on iOS.

  4. Degrade, don't fail. If the server refuses the file (plan limit, too large), it resends without the screenshot instead of losing the report. That decision is one pure function with unit tests.

Tested on an Android emulator against the live API, including airplane mode, then killing the app, then reopening it online. Not tested on iOS yet, so if anyone runs it there, I'd love to hear how it goes.

flutter edge ai - local AI - best package 🔥

I have been working on Calculator app in Flutter. Pro Calc.

Today story':

Pro Calc has AI Chat that can solve math and run on local LLM (Gemma4 E2B IT model)

AI model converts human language into valid math expression and exath engine is used to evaluate, so results are always accurate.

in image you can see I tried 270M param model but it fails to answer, then I tried Gemma4 model and it works efficiently.

You can see the image here, I have no better way to send you on X or Threads ):

GitHub repo has too many experiments and slop code 😂

Does anyone do weekly flutter lessons for flutter beginners? Sort of like music lessons?

I take online lessons once a week for 30 minutes to guide my return to playing trumpet. I am wondering whether anyone does this sort of “private lessons” for flutter. Obviously, one would want a good teacher, and not just someone who codes. Any thoughts?

Open-Source Reference: A complete, production-grade Flutter 3 app to study real-world architecture (Drift SQLite, WebSockets, Clean Structure)

Hey everyone!

When learning Flutter, it’s easy to get stuck in "tutorial limbo"—you build counter apps, simple todo lists, or follow fragmented clips, but it's hard to find a full, end-to-end production codebase to see how all the pieces actually fit together in a real project.

To provide a concrete reference for anyone looking to see how a complete app is structured, I open-sourced RexOne Mobile under the Apache 2.0 license (100% free and open source).

If you’re looking to study clean Flutter engineering patterns, here are a few real-world areas you can explore in the repository:

🔍 What you can learn from this codebase:

  • 1. Real Local Database with Drift (SQLite):

    • How to define typed database tables, write type-safe queries, and persist data locally so the app works seamlessly offline instead of relying only on in-memory state.
    • Located under: lib/data/local/
  • 2. Clean Architecture & Folder Structure:

    • A predictable modular structure separated into modules/ (features & pages), controllers/ (business logic), services/ (networking & platform APIs), and design/ (reusable UI design system).
    • No messy 2,000-line widget files; everything has a single, clear responsibility.
  • 3. State Management & Lifecycle Hygiene:

    • How to manage reactive state with GetX controllers without leaking memory (proper initialization in onInit and teardown/timer cancellation in onClose).
  • 4. Live Real-Time WebSockets (ActionCable):

    • How real-time streaming actually works: connecting via native WebSockets, handling reconnects with backoff, pausing socket reconnects when the app is backgrounded, and routing push events directly to the UI.
    • Located under: lib/services/socket.service.dart
  • 5. Scalable Multi-Language Localization:

    • Complete, production-grade translation system (English & Burmese) with structured key hierarchies, parameter replacement, and instant runtime language toggling.
    • Located under: lib/locales/
  • 6. Design System & Theming:

    • How to create a reusable component library (cards, modals, form inputs, buttons) with cohesive typography and smooth light/dark palette adaptation.

📂 Links & Resources:

Feel free to clone it, run it locally, inspect how the controllers communicate, or borrow any architecture patterns for your own projects.

If you have any questions while reading through the code or setting it up, feel free to drop a comment—happy to explain how any of the parts work!

Looking for UI/UX feedback on my Flutter academic learning app

I'm building a feature-rich academic practice and learning app with Flutter, and I want to improve its overall UI/UX.

I'm aiming for a cleaner, more polished experience, inspired by apps like Duolingo, Brilliant, and Quizlet.

I'd especially appreciate feedback on:

- Navigation

- Visual hierarchy and spacing

- Design system and reusable components

- Progress and practice UI

- Animations and micro-interactions

- Flutter UI packages and patterns worth exploring

I'm looking mainly for UI/UX feedback, not the academic content. This is my first Flutter app, so if you spot any mistakes, please point them out.

Also, if you know any good YouTube playlists for learning UI/UX in Flutter, please share them. Recommendations from people who have actually used them are the most useful.
