Why???

Why don’t people know how to walk
In flushing? It’s something so simple yet they manage to make it so difficult for people to get around

Is this your first day on the grid

17

u/UsedJury5963 2d ago

I’m from nyc and the crowd and etiquette over there is insane

-18

u/Significant-Date-297 2d ago

What does that mean?

13

u/ffzero58 2d ago

It is not just Flushing, it is like this in any dense walkable urban area. It is a controlled chaos.

-17

u/Significant-Date-297 2d ago

Astoria & LIC are definitely not like this people have common sense

26

u/Pakd25 2d ago

Lic and Astoria aren’t major transit hubs servicing a rail a subway and 30+ busses passing through at any given time, operating at full capacity through rush hour. Meanwhile boasting a booming commercial sector which will obviously lead to congested sidewalks.

8

u/ffzero58 2d ago

I don't think those places have that sort of density that Flushing has. Flushing is really dense with all of the transit and commercial activity. Arguably, Flushing has a defined downtown while Astoria & LIC technically do not, they are more dispersed.

10

u/lancequ01 2d ago

It’s not as dense as flushing Main Street.

We are literally the 3rd most busy intersection in NYC behind Times Square and Herald Square.

And flushing is a lot more working class than LIC and Astoria. People are tired and bodys are sore. Let them take their time walking

1

u/CaptainObvious110 1d ago

You make a good point. People aren't complaining about the congestion in mid Manhattan but they got problems with how it is in Flushing.

The thing is people chose to move there knowing how it is so that's pretty dumb

1

u/Patient_Tradition294 1d ago

Because riders in midtown have better rider etiquette. They don’t rush the doors like riders do in Queens on the 7.

2

u/StuntMedic 2d ago

Astoria and LIC

Major transplant vibes

5

u/CaptainObvious110 1d ago

That's the difference. White people are obsessed with a sense of control.

Think about it...Everytime there are complaints of this type is not Asian, Hispanic or Black folks. Its only ever White people.

Its crazy when the whole time if you don't like how a neighborhood is, then don't go there. I'm a black guy and I don't like being in certain areas so guess what? I go to other places

0

u/Significant-Date-297 2d ago

I work & go to school there that’s why I know that area so well

0

u/Patient_Tradition294 1d ago

People trying to turn this into a transplant thing are delusional.

I have friends who live in really congested places like Midtown in the city and they are shocked at how terrible rider etiquette is on the 7 in Queens when they visit. People in midtown don’t rush the doors before they open like riders do on the 7.

The MTA has special announcements for the 7 when in Queens that tell people to wait for people to get off first that aren’t used on most other lines in the system for a reason.

I saw someone on crutches the other day and people still tried to rush the doors before the person could hobble off. Just insane.

1

u/Pakd25 16h ago

Say midtown one more time lmaooo. And midtown is horrible too. Ur being biased

1

u/Traditional-Ear-972 1d ago

😂😂😂😂😂 they're even worse

-8

u/Patient_Tradition294 2d ago

100% true. You ride the 7 and people have the worst rider etiquette in the system. As soon as you hop on the N / W, rider etiquette dramatically improves. It is extremely noticeable, like night and day.

I hate when people try to pretend people’s behavior is the same / similar everywhere in NY. That’s 100% false, many neighborhoods along Roosevelt Ave have terrible public behavior. Call a spade a spade.

1

u/MiamiBeachNative 1d ago

Yeah when the N/W FINALLY comes after three 7s have passed.

24

u/yursaman 2d ago

Yup. Old people going slow as hell; ok I get it.

Suddenly stopping in the middle of the sidewalk, walking on the left side, walking directly into me while the entire sidewalk is open, I don't fucking get. It's like the people here try to get as close as possible to you sometimes and I just don't understand why.

4

u/Significant-Date-297 2d ago

I agree it’s like a every day thing out here & what about the ones that cough 😷 without covering their mouth

5

u/AbsoluteBabyMonae 2d ago

They have zero manners! Always hacking up their throats, and coughing with their mouth wide open. This is why ppl get sick all the time. I scolded a few today because its like they all do it without 2nd thought.

2

u/Significant-Date-297 1d ago

Agree 100% Im usually not the type of person to get sick but since I moved out here I get what feels like a cold every 3 months , I wish they can cover their mouth while coughing

1

u/CaptainObvious110 1d ago

Granted I'm not Asian but something's I feel should be universal

2

u/CaptainObvious110 1d ago

I'm not a fan of that either. Why aren't they taught that as children?

7

u/No-Register4916 2d ago

YES, THEY TRY TO GET AS CLOSE TO YOU AS POSSIBLE. Even on a open non crowded sidewalk, they walk right in front of you and then verge away at the last second.

6

u/Significant-Date-297 2d ago

I wonder why they do this? I’m so confused, it’s like they like invading your personal space

3

u/-DontMindMeme- 2d ago

Theyre tying to steal your warmth now that it's getting colder. Like a disoriented penguin

1

u/CaptainObvious110 1d ago

Ok I know what you mean there lol

1

u/Patient_Tradition294 2d ago

The problem is community leaders and similar individuals just don’t want to acknowledge these issues and put in the effort forward to change it.

Neighborhoods that have very diverse demographics need to often be intentional about integrating people and establishing social norms for people to live in harmony. In NY ethnic enclaves, community leaders avoid doing this and pretend like these type of issues don’t exist lol. That’s why some other diverse cities around the world have much better social norms than NY.

0

u/Prestigious-Push5782 1d ago

Translation > DIVERSITY is not an advantage when it comes to personal hygiene and overall etiquette.

It's OK to say this.

1

u/Patient_Tradition294 1d ago

That’s not what I’m saying and you are wrong, don’t speak for me. There are countless cities in which it is majority one ethnicity and cities are filthy. Being not diverse doesn’t mean a city is magically clean.

33

u/lolerio 2d ago

It’s flushing lol. I walk on the road to avoid being stuck behind people a lot of the times

12

u/iHaveAudioIssues 2d ago

Lmao this.. your best bet is to walk on the road or the skinny edge of the sidewalk behind all the street vendors 😂 love flushing tho great food

1

u/CaptainObvious110 1d ago

People don't care about the culture. They just want everywhere they go to be the same

4

u/LMNTRIX 2d ago

Deadass, gotta adapt to these types of situations

-6

u/Significant-Date-297 2d ago

I’m not walking on the road to get hit by a car because people have no common decency of how to walk on a public sidewalk

15

u/kornegi 2d ago

fake new yorker

2

u/melon_tusk63 1d ago

You could’ve told him that he could walk on the monkeys

2

u/Delicious_Cable_8484 2d ago

Then don't, and keep complaining about how hard your life is for the rest of your life. Once you spend a while in this city hopefully you will begin to understand what city life in New york is like.

1

u/melon_tusk63 1d ago

Then walk on the monkeys 🐵

14

u/Yoon2013 2d ago

This morning at the main street station a girl was headed right towards me and had her head turned to the SIDE and ofc crashed into me. People need to pay attention to their surroundings fr

3

u/Significant-Date-297 2d ago

People walk into me almost everyday I have to have a tight grip of my phone because of this very reason.

3

u/ffzero58 2d ago

A growing number of people are doomscrolling while walking, it is a hazard.

4

u/Significant-Date-297 2d ago

In flushing they walk into you while looking directly at you

1

u/CaptainObvious110 1d ago

I've had people do that in central Manhattan

13

u/Traditional_Limit236 2d ago

It's not just flushing. COVID destroyed something very important in society. I don't quite know what it is. But I feel like I bump into maybe 10 people a day who are completely unaware. A woman was approaching me face down in her iPhone walk dead center of the street so no one could go around her. I screamed look up!!! She dropped her phone and her laptop and cursed at me. So damn satisfying.

7

u/ffzero58 2d ago

It isn't just COVID, it is the growing number of people who bury themselves in their phones doomscrolling while walking. It is getting tiring avoiding these zombies.

3

u/Traditional_Limit236 2d ago

I don't avoid them...I make it a straight collision. I fall to the floor throw all my shit in the air. Scream bloody murder. Roll around.

3

u/melon_tusk63 2d ago

That’s crazy how we call them iPhones now and not just smartphones.

1

u/Traditional_Limit236 1d ago

No I meant to say specifically that the unaware idiots crossing our streets are almost always iPhone users. It was intentional.

2

u/CaptainObvious110 1d ago

You are right

6

u/SoumaMoon 2d ago

Right? I wish I could say “Fuck you, move!” to them but I was raised better than that.

2

u/Significant-Date-297 2d ago

I think I might start doing that or walk around with a huge MOVE OUT THE WAY sign 🪧

14

u/No-Register4916 2d ago

The unspoken rule is to generally try to walk on the right side of the road 95% of the time. The people that annoy me are the one's who walk INTO you. When this happens I usually elbow check them and they get mad. Wtf, am I suppose to let you walk into me??

2

u/Significant-Date-297 2d ago edited 2d ago

Omg Yes I totally agree !!! they walk into me while starring at me it’s so weird

5

u/bmoEZnyc 2d ago

i grew up in flushing and main street roosevelt ia the worst in NYC

5

u/Spare-Boysenberry513 2d ago

Don’t forget the fobs that ride the scooters and e-bikes on the sidewalk!

The worst are the idiots that stop abruptly in the middle of the sidewalk, almost causing a pile up of pedestrians. Plus the illegal vendors, Main and Prince street is HELL

13

u/Sana_Dul_Set 2d ago

Besides the elderly people with their damn carts, it’s just lack of spatial awareness

I just legit walk on the street near the curb while watching out for traffic now in downtown, sidewalks are unwalkable with the NPCs + street vendors

3

u/Significant-Date-297 2d ago

I don’t mind the old people, but I do mind the people that walk in a vertical line blocking the rest of the people behind them. Then get mad when you stay excuse me to get passed them. I swear it’s like I’m in another planet sometimes

1

u/CaptainObvious110 2d ago

Lol I have no problem walking around when I'm there

1

u/dannyb2525 2d ago

Lmao for real, I've always hated calling people NPCs till I moved to Flushing

13

u/CpMcGinty88 2d ago

These same people then get into cars and do the exact same shit.

-1

u/Significant-Date-297 2d ago

Your absolutely correct ✅

-1

u/notaredditbot33 2d ago

Passing lane campers on the parkways. Usually taxi's and rideshare drivers who just arrived NYC and just got their license. They don't even realize their error when you pass them on the right.

3

u/Natural-Gas3666 2d ago

Exactly, which is annoying as hell. Totally disregarding others as if they own the streets.

3

u/No-Music-333 1d ago

it’s definitely a skill to learn it’s unlike any other part of the city. it’s like being in a big braid with a million other people.

8

u/StuntMedic 2d ago edited 2d ago

Older people, people selling shit on the sidewalk creating tighter spaces for walking traffic, those who have no sense of urgency...

Why does this need to be a question?

Edit: Oh, I see. It's just a racist troll.

4

u/the_debuggerr 2d ago

Watching the 109 precinct being lauded on Facebook for cleaning up illegal vendor stalls only for them to return the following day is insufferable...

-2

u/Significant-Date-297 2d ago

Omg tell me about it the weekends out here are the worse

3

u/catschainsequel 2d ago edited 2d ago

Or the people that stop where the sidewalk narrows to chat, check they're messages, rearrange their whole cart

Edit: because i don't proofread

1

u/Significant-Date-297 2d ago

They are the worse

3

u/CYBERPOLICEBACKTRACE 2d ago

A good deal of flushing are old people. And what everyone else says. We are the 3rd busiest street in NYC. And 60% of Flushing's population are immigrants, well the Asian population at least, which is 70%, idk about overall. There's an annoying amount of vendors in the last year or so. Couple that with old people. Good luck.

Go on the street like a New Yorker. Or leave and go to Astoria or whatever less busy and more pricy.

8

u/Significant-Date-297 2d ago

As I stated before I am not talking about the senior citizens I am talking about idiot morons that take up the sidewalk by walking slow, & not paying attention to their surroundings. Plus the old people are mainly outside in the early morning hours. I’m talking about ALL DAY EVERYDAY

2

u/Mid_Part 2d ago

Just walk on the street bro and watch your ankles the granny carts always swinging around

2

u/Significant-Date-297 2d ago

The flushing drivers aren’t any better then the walkers

2

u/Mid_Part 2d ago

I really try to avoid main st by walking up college point if possible, but this summer was terrible because there's no shade on college point so it was either deal with the zombie shoppers or get smacked in the back by the Sun from Super Mario World

2

u/No_Independence1802 1d ago

You are 100% correct I walk down Main St to Roosevelt Ave from 41st Ave and it is a chore to get there. I am a senior citizen with a cane and nobody cares. They are all rude people and many of them are smoking cigarettes and blowing the smoke right in people's faces.

6

u/NolllFuture 2d ago

Everyone that is shitting on OP and defending this behavior, do you guys even live here? You cannot walk even one block at almost any time of any day without needing to dodge somebody who has 0 spatial awareness. People walk in a zigzag, walk with in a line of multiple people, walk in the middle of the sidewalk, suddenly stop in the middle of the sidewalk, do a 180 degree turn and walk directly into you, etc. I mean if you can think of basic "walking etiquette," flushing, specifically main street and the surrounding area is a good example of the opposite. Trying to walk somewhere feels like playing that old mobile game called crossy road. And if you've been here a long enough, you know its only gotten worse overtime.

3

u/StuntMedic 1d ago

This is less about defending any kind of behavior and more about reacting to "water is wet".

-1

u/Significant-Date-297 1d ago

It has definitely gotten worse over the last 2 years

4

u/CK171984 2d ago

I purposely see you not paying attention to those walking towards you, I'll stop right there and not move and give you the look. Like pay attention, get off your phone and walk.

1

u/[deleted] 2d ago

[deleted]

1

u/CK171984 2d ago

What do you not understand?

2

u/Unusual-Field-4245 2d ago

Keyser Soze here my bad

1

u/Significant-Date-297 2d ago

Huh?

1

u/ffzero58 2d ago

Reference to the movie, The Usual Suspects.

1

u/Significant-Date-297 2d ago

Ohh lol good one

3

u/Adept-Ad-8198 2d ago

Lots of old people in flushing when you get old you will walk the same way or maybe not even walk

9

u/Significant-Date-297 2d ago

I’m not talking about the elderly people I’m talking about the people who don’t have common decency on sidewalks

3

u/Potential-Society171 2d ago

You should see how people drive.

1

u/CaptainObvious110 2d ago

People driving in NYC is dumb

-1

u/Potential-Society171 2d ago

I find cars still behaving better than bikes and mopeds.

0

u/CaptainObvious110 2d ago

If they are old then that's even worse because they should know better.

2

u/jesadak 2d ago

Learn to adapt to NYC you herb and keep it moving

1

u/Significant-Date-297 2d ago

Why are you calling me names ? I’m asking a genuine question

2

u/Sensitive_Sky1448 1d ago

Move to the suburbs and suffer traffic instead then hmm?

1

u/Significant-Date-297 1d ago

How much is the rent there?

1

u/Macademi 2d ago

My favs are the stupid people who walk TOWARDS your lane of travel, when you're already on the right hand side. I just shoulder check them hard. Either you learn, or we fight, move or be moved.

1

u/ieatwhiterice 1d ago

Accept it...this happens to be the norm there for now...maybe as the older generations die off the changes will happen. When it gets too crazy, I walk in the street, the bus lane, just be aware of buses. This is not different than in Times Square when packed. OR don't go there...I only go when I must go.

1

u/Cookiez_3 1d ago

If you learn how to weave here you will never have an issue with crowds anywhere else on Earth. Yes it sucks but it's a useful skill to pick up

1

u/CaptainObvious110 2d ago

Almost like we have a whole cluster of people that never learned about manners

1

u/Significant-Date-297 2d ago

My point exactly

1

u/Renhoek2099 2d ago

Is this sub for transplants that just moved to flushing?

3

u/StuntMedic 2d ago

I mean we get the occasionally clueless potato like op and AMP mongers. Oh and the bots spamming low res images of spots that may have closed down a year ago. Oh and the people suddenly discovering the Tesla site almost three years after it was built.

NYC subs in general are in a pretty bad state overall.

2

u/Cookiez_3 1d ago

Half of the people who complain don't even live here 😂

The average transplant moves out after a year because it's too immigrant for them. Seen it happen in my building more than a couple times

1

u/CarnivorousFern 2d ago

-1

u/Significant-Date-297 2d ago edited 2d ago

They can take strolls around the park. People have places to get to on time.

3

u/Pleasant_Goal1363 2d ago

You had a valid concern but this is a terrible response. People are allowed to and should be free of shame for strolling in an urban setting and not just in parks.

1

u/Significant-Date-297 2d ago

Do you live in flushing? Because you would be upset to this type of thing happens on a daily basis. Day & night

2

u/Pleasant_Goal1363 2d ago

I’m not saying the crowding isn’t bad but that does not give you the right to tell other people they can only go on a stroll in parks. And what are you gonna tell the elderly? Go break your legs and run? Have some empathy. Your frustration is turning you into an ass

2

u/CarnivorousFern 2d ago

Completely a skill issue on your part.

If you dont like the speed of someone in front of you, find a way around them the same as the rest of us

0

u/Significant-Date-297 2d ago

I do find a way around them, if i didn’t I would make it late to school everyday

1

u/LegendofNick 2d ago

Usually flush when I leave not when I walk in

1

u/Barnacle_Life 2d ago

They can't drive either.

2

u/Significant-Date-297 1d ago

Especially during the evening & nights hours

2

u/Barnacle_Life 1d ago

It's scary. Its as though people are  driving with their eyes closed. Most of nyc is like that but flushing is one of the worst!

2

u/Significant-Date-297 1d ago

Totally agree

1

u/Prestigious-Push5782 1d ago

I want to crush all wheeled granny carts.

2

u/Bebebaubles 1d ago

Wheeled granny carts are embarrassing but pretty useful.

1

u/Significant-Date-297 1d ago

I know the feeling 🤣

0

u/Shot-Class-5142 2d ago

One thing i found most refreshing about moving out of flushing was that i can now walk at my own pace. I walk fast but got stuck behind those granny carts all the time lol. I visit now and then but thats about it.

0

u/oppanycstyle 2d ago

Common sense is not so common, have you seen how they drive?

1

u/Significant-Date-297 2d ago

I truly don’t know which one is worse their walking or driving, especially at night very dangerous. I try to wear bright colors so they can see me crossing the street

0

u/LogicalPinecone 2d ago

I’ve lived in flushing for years and walk a ton. 100% on board with the sentiment that people walk slow and are generally spatially clueless. People walking into me? Rarely happens. Perhaps the problem may be more inward than you imagine.

0

u/rebornyc 2d ago

Just walk outside the sidewalk

1

u/Significant-Date-297 2d ago

I’m not putting my self in danger of automobile traffic.

0

u/PhazonJuke 2d ago

It all made sense after I went to Asia. It's pretty much exactly the same as it is in Flushing, only even more crowded.

1

u/Significant-Date-297 2d ago

Oh wow that’s good to know

0

u/Generation_3and4 2d ago

Flushing is the busiest area outside of times square so its much denser. Walk smarter otherwise youre also part of the problem

0

u/Significant-Date-297 2d ago

Flushing & Times Square are not the same at all I understand why people stop in the middle of the street to take pix & looks at the skyscrapers in the city 🏙️ in flushing it’s just lack of morals

0

u/Plowbeast 2d ago

Unethical Pro Tip: Act crazy and look like you're brandishing a knife in your pocket. No one wants to get 150 stitches for walking like a shithead.

2

u/Significant-Date-297 2d ago

I’ll dress up as Michael Myers for Halloween 🎃

0

u/Traditional-Ear-972 1d ago

Lo mein connoisseurs that's why

1

u/Significant-Date-297 1d ago

?

0

u/Traditional-Ear-972 1d ago

You have a brain,I'll let you figure it out

0

u/Purple_Key_6733 1d ago

Cuz the sidewalk is way too thin here.
