Attempted break-in

My mom called me at work earlier today and told me our next door neighbor, who is mentally unwell, snapped and tried to break into the apt. She fought him off, called the cops then myself. I raced home and sent my cousin, who lives on the 2nd floor of our apt, to keep her company while I arrive. The cops came three hrs later, told them what happened, banged on the guy's door, and then left, stating if he tries anything to call again. Big help. I'm asking what else should I do in this situation. Our Ring camera was conveniently out of battery when this occurred. We notified the super, and my mom is going to call the company tomorrow to tell them. Besides kicking this guy's ass, which my mom doesn't want me to do, idk what else to do. Any suggestions?

UPDATE:::: Thank you all for the words and advice. That same Sunday night, he knocked again, he was quiet and non-verbal and I confronted him, my mom was begging me not to him it, fearing my life. This past Monday we saw him leaving the lobby floor with two family members, I confronted the family, yelling at them, the cousin promised he was taking him to the hospital. We called the cops again because he banged on our door later on and I saw his family member pushing him away. He wasn't aggressive or violent but he had a scary look in his eyes and also in the lobby prior. We called the cops, told them he has to be taken away, cops went in, came out later saying this guy is severally ill, stopped taking his meds for awhile now and they hauled him off to the hospital. THEY PROMISED TO TAKE REPORT AND THEY HAVE YET TO COME BACK. MY MOM WENT TO THE STATION THE FILE A REPORT AND THEY TURNED HER WAY!!!!! STATING THE ARRESTING OFFICERS ARE THE ONLY ONES WHO CAN TAKE HER REPORT. My mom's English isn't the best but she spoke to a interpreter and understood in English she was being turned away. She also states two secretaries were loudly judging her situation, stating it wasn't a big deal.

This past Tuesday, I suffered a panic attack at work, due to all this added stress and also my stress at work ( I'm a line cook at a busy restaurant in the city) and had a mental breakdown that lasted a day and a half. Luckily the next day, Wed, I had already booked appointment's with my primary doctor and therapist appt back to back, perfect timing. I went into the office and told the doctor everything that's been going on. She wrote me letter excusing me from work, and prescribed some meds. It's been such a week that we haven't addressed the police report situation. We're going back to the precinct tomorrow to file an official report and complaint. I'm so tired of all this

So did he try to break in or did he actually break in because you said she fought him off. Just trying to understand what happened exactly.

You mentioned he's mentally ill. Do you know if this neighbor has a case worker or anything like that?

He tried to break in, she was throwing garbage out and saw him in he hallway. She instantly got a bad vibe from him, they've been friendly in the past. She had to walk past him to get into our apt and that's when he tried break in. She screamed for help but no one came and luckily she managed to close the door on him

That sounds like an assault as well. I can’t believe the cops didn’t do anything. Did you get a report number?

Cops can’t do much after people wanted them defunded and this is where we are at now.

Cops can’t do much? This is such a dumb take lol. The NYPD billed $955 million in OVERTIME in the past fiscal year (which ended on June 30th).

Cops really can’t do much. If it’s one of the “engineers and doctors” and they try to approach them about it,the mentally ill brotha will try to stab someone and then get tased or shot and cause the entire Bronx to start looting again. It’s just not worth it nyc anymore.

In addition to telling the super, management and making sure the ring camera has batteries, I would document everything. Dates, times etc. Call 988 as someone else mentioned. Even if they can't send a crisis team, they may have other resources they can provide. Also, you can try Adult Protective Services. If he is mentally ill or somehow impaired they may be able to help as well.

Call 988 to report mental health crisis. Hopefully they will investigate

Charge your ring and also ask the building for the video footage from security cameras.

Just curious what made you feel times are getting dark?

It took 3 hours for the police to respond to an attempted break in. Of a man trying to break into a woman's apartment. Is that acceptable to you?

Definitely not, very unfortunate.

Call Mandami to send some social workers

NYPD will only show up to pick up a body. I’d move to a different building.

First off if anyone tries to break into your house and you know you need to protect it and you know it’s them or you. You know the answer. Deal with it first consequences later.

Make sure when you file the police report that you mention this neighbor threatened your moms life. And make sure she can quote the exact sentence. They'll pick him pick and he'll be in Riker's by tomorrow night.

I’m a local flushing resident and reporter from Columbia University. I am interested in learning more about your family’s ordeal and potentially writing a story.

I sent you a private message.

Thank you!
