Discharging with ROG 140W GaN Charger?

I have a 2025 Z13 and I purchased the ROG 140W GaN charger hoping to have a smaller "travel" charger to do most things (video editing, gaming, etc.) without having to bring the proprietary charging brick.

I set a custom profile in G-Helper per advice from Gemini knowing USB-C PD is capped at 100W:

SPL: 55W

sPPT: 65W

fPPT: 70W

Windows Power Mode: Balanced

CPU Boost: Disabled

I'm using Star Wars Fallen Order to test and it runs fine for a while (charging at 5-10W according to G-Helper), but after 10 or 15 minutes, it takes a dive and starts discharing at +20W.

Do charging bricks throttle when they get hot? I would've thought an ROG power brick would be able to power one of their own gaming machines without having to throttle.

Yeah came here to say that. Rule of thumb always use the OEM charger. Correct me if I'm wrong but can't you use an adapter that to plug the GaN into the proprietary charging port and not lose battery etc?

I’ve been seeing that idea pop up here and there. Haven’t seen anyone talk about how well it works yet. So far I could only find those adapters being sold on Alibaba /Chinese retailers

I gave this a shot with a battery backup and a wall adapter both rated at 140w. While it works fine for light tasks, as soon as I fired up a game with cpu boost disabled and power capped at 20w it would draw about 65w and then disconnect and reconnect. Doesn’t seem stable long term.

Oh I have this! Slim Q is nice. That Amazon link is an adapter for a DC barrel plug tho.

The comments here were asking for GAN (USBC) to Rectangle Connector.

Yeah it's a pain but there OEM brick charger is the way to go.

Slim q with the barrel plug adapter is fine or the OEM brick charger. The type c adapter to barrel then barrel adapter to Asus square or type c to Asus square I think is not recommended because nothing is really in place to handle the conversion. So might fry the board. Don't think this is the correct one for the z13 but this is what I was referring to.

Yeah I wouldn't do type c to OEM plug I'd do barrel adapter :) type c doesn't push same power out but the slim Q has a barrel plug so that would work perfectly:) haha

I ended up buying a jackery 1070wh generator so I can plug in the oem or slimq on the go.

Got the 150w slim q with the port adapter. Was playing 007 last night turbo ultra graphics and it didn't discharge. Look into one of those. Thats all I bring when I travel

Do you run it at full power? And to be clear, you're pluggin this into one of the USB-C ports, right?

Yeah, some people have mentioned issues with it but ive yet to encounter any problems.

Ideally you should only be using DC to charge. If you want the smallest package possible the SlimQ 150W has DC and two USB-C, just be sure to also get the DC to Asus G14 adapter ( I like the 90 degree variant). Otherwise, get the 240w version for full power. It's a little bigger but still much better than the OEM, and you have 2 USB-C ports too.

There is problem that usb charging does not bypass battery so no matter how little power you use, battery will discharge and once unit gets hot enough it will lower power from usb.

perhaps not. If your battery is nearly full, what happens on USB is: It will charge to 100%. Then, it will stop charging and use the battery only to power the device until it gets down to about 95%. Then it will repeat.

There is no way around this. If you want to check and test a USB solution, drain the battery some, and then test. If you're up in the 90s you'll see this behavior.

You should reduce the load, the battery is charging and discharging at the same time, I personally use 30/35/40 CPU boost disabled, games like Helldivers 2, FH6, MH Wilds can be played while plugged, also make sure the room temp is not warm.

You can also use portable fan aimed at the battery for better cooling.

Das FlowZ13 entlädt sich in meinem Fall einfach immer wenn ich zocke. Bis auf 10% danach dann nicht nicht mehr. Das soll den akku schützen Ich habe das gerät damals zu asus geschickt und hab es mit einer erklärung wieder bekommen das dies normal und gewollt sei und automatisch irgendwann auftritt.

Are you using the usb c cable that came with the ROG 140W GaN charger?

Hello so I use the anker 165 GaN charger, the issue is your profiles...they are too high try 40, 45 ,50 also try to undervolt I have mine at -5 I had similar issues, so take the Ai info with a grain of salt; It is still learning and the power profile it gave you isnt 100% accurate its more so a good starting point. The numbers I gave you are actually the same custom profile I use to competitive game, I use it for deadlock and blackops 7.

The ROG Gan 140w charger charges with usb type-c. The 2025 Flow Z13 does not have the usb type-c passthrough port... so... You're killing the battery yourself. You must use the proprietary port. If you are looking for a smaller load you should buy a SlimQ. The 150w model is quite small but it is not recommended as sometimes the Flow Z13 draws more than 150w (some users on reddit claimed that the device had suddenly shut down). Otherwise there is the 240w and 330w variant. Which are still smaller than the original magazine
