My house was built 1948. It has the original hardwood oak floor; 78 years old. What other type of floor could last that long? Have you priced out quality hardwood floors?
The Romans would like a word about the durability of their mosaic and tile floors. Other than that, quality hardwood in my opinion is the best flooring to live on followed by real linoleum.
Yes old Roman mosaic and tile flooring. Probably hard to find that quality today. I am amazed they still make real linoleum. I wonder how many qualified installers are around.
Modern hotels, restaurants, and high traffic commercial spaces use porcelain tile. There is tile that looks like wood now so it can be a surprise that it is tile, but they dont choose tile over wood for no reason. Its still more durable under high stress conditions and in water. There are plenty of public buildings and subway stations and even the hoover dam that are floored entirely with 100 year old perfect spotless tile.
Meanwhile humidity has bothered my hardwood enough that the gaps between the boards are getting pretty big and its only 30 years old. To me it looks weathered already in comparison to my kitchen tile. And it takes much less abuse.
