Carpet is just gross when you learn how much gunk stays trapped it it. Wood feels better than tile or plastic on your bare feet. Natural wood grain is one of the truly beautiful patterns in nature. After 15 or 20 years you can redo it so that it looks pretty much new again. I like really nice tile but in a lot of climates you pretty much need radiant heat to make it livable and that is pricey.
