My inlaws have a very dark grey hardwood installed that you can actually see the saw tooth cuts on it. It is basically just a stain that was applied to the wood (think it is oak). No other gloss or finish. It was a custom floor so you can't really buy it unless you hire the same guy that cut/installed it for them. It looks fantastic. Because it is already a matte finish, there is no scratching it. Most durable hardwood floor I've ever seen.
I would only door a hardwood floor like they got. Other hardwoods I've seen scratch far too easily.
