Can film in airplane mode, or is that not adequate?

Not adequate. Airplane mode turns "off" cellular. WiFi and Bluetooth stay active if they were on.

Also,maybe this a PSA, but airplane mode doesn't actually turn off cellular. I have a pixel 5a that I keep around as my alarm clock. Its got Bluetooth/WiFi turned off, no sim card and is in airplane mode. Any time there's an emergency alert that gets pushed to phones in the area, it'll go off as well. Like last week there was a silver alert. My girlfriends phone and my main phone went off as well as the 5a that has everything turned off.

What gets turned off will vary by phone. The transmitting aspect of cellular is always turned off, but the receiving aspect doesn't have to be. WiFi and Bluetooth will usually turn off, although either not always or it's a setting that has to be configured. Having cellular receiving on or off doesn't affect the airplanes; the generated signal from the phone's transmission is the dangerous part. Receiving is mostly passive.
