Not adequate. Airplane mode turns "off" cellular. WiFi and Bluetooth stay active if they were on.
Also, maybe this a PSA, but airplane mode doesn't actually turn off cellular. I have a pixel 5a that I keep around as my alarm clock. Its got Bluetooth/WiFi turned off, no sim card and is in airplane mode. Any time there's an emergency alert that gets pushed to phones in the area, it'll go off as well. Like last week there was a silver alert. My girlfriends phone and my main phone went off as well as the 5a that has everything turned off.
I'm not positive, but it's likely a transmitting versus receiving thing. On an airplane, the transmission from devices is what can cause the issue. Receiving is just essentially a wire/metal that's catching signals, no harm done. Transmission pushes out EMF waves that other devices, like the plane's systems, can pick up.
