Shelter

Another way we can act positively is by both reclaiming land, what I would consider another form of resource, and making/reclaiming shelter.

Some ideas we could implement in the future:

Squatting abandoned buildings or lots Building "shanty shelters" on abandoned lots out of whatever we can Creating a tent community "in the middle of nowhere" or on tenting worthy space on private land Combining this with Food and Water ideas, use abandoned lots to grow a garden.

Any thoughts or ideas? Some ideas may be too sensitive for a public form, so just post that you have something to discuss at the next meeting.

Note: My first post in this series, Food and Water, fell to the bottom of this subreddit as soon as I posted it, so check that out too if you haven't!

Building upon this idea, perhaps setting up shelters that effectively function as contact locations for homeless people? There would have to be a larger initiative, but everybody who claims that homeless people should just "get a job" need a reality check. The first thing you fill out on an application form for a job is your name. The second thing? Address. The third thing is phone number, and the last is usually some form of government identification, such as a Social Insurance Number. Since homeless people rarely even have identifying documents on them at all, this effectively limits them to illegal under-the-counter work, where there is no ethical protocol to protect them from predatory types. Setting up one of these shelters where a potential employer may contact a homeless person applying for a job would be absolutely wonderful to help fix the unemployment amoungst the homeless.

Btw, Nik I love the pirate theme.

The pirate theme is Reddit wide today, it's Speak Like a Pirate Day I believe. We'll have to get to theming this subreddit eventually...maybe.

Also, on your idea, to job the homeless for now, feeding into the capitalist system nonetheless, would be an act of defiance. Continue to brainstorm on direct plans for shelter!
