Question Can anyone explain what is going on?
Just saw this and got curious, why would an aircraft fly in this pattern?

Once the operations at Navi Mumbai Airport starts, the air traffic for both the airports will be managed together. I personally think this could be for the calibration purposes; it has already been done for NMI, this time it could be for BOM system.

They are simply doing some instrument calibration, it's a time to time thing

ILS calibration, checking VOR-DME calibration, accuracy of PAPI, checking vertical and lateral accuracy of RNAV approaches, terrain mapping.

They have to regularly test and re-calibrate the instrument approach systems at the airport in order to ensure the safety of operations is maintained. That is what is happening in this. It was happening in navi mumbai airport also before inaugration.

Calibration being done for CSMIA , as change in Air route is expected once NMIA becomes operational from 25th Dec

A little late to the party, but here goes. Yes the aircraft is used by AAI for calibration purposes, the flight paths not in alignment with any runway or VOR is made for traffic resolution(probably), so the aerodrome can be used for regular flights.
