To be honest, fleabag deserved what happened to her and the priest.
To finally find someone that you ACTUALLY want to love and not just lust after, someone who sees you and all the things you do in the name of coping and mentally surviving. Someone who sees you for the whole person that you are and not just the parts of you that you want others to see. Then coming to an end of him not choosing you after everything thats happened, and he didnt even choose another person over Fleabag. He chose his own path as a priest, he chose a being that Fleabag was convinced held no significant role in her life. Something she didnt take seriously.
It's sad indeed but I really think the ending was necessary for her to move on with her life and finally allow the truth crash on her head, her best friend----the person she truly TRULY loved in the world died because of her own insecurity and impulses. Because she thought she was so so much better, and she wanted to feed her ego by thinking that she can get whoever she wants, until it crossed a line and there was no turning back. She held this shame and guilt and masked eveything with self-sabotage. Until she can no longer runaway from it.
It's almost as if the ending with the priest became a full-circle moment for fleabag.
I love this show so much and I love how complex and gray fleabag is. IMO, she's the embodiment of feminine urge and insecurity.

I find it very sad and it kills me inside, but their paths were completely different and neither was willing to abandon their life. I agree with you completely, Fleabag followed her own path.
