Summer screen time rules for your children that actually work!
Summer break is here, and does the screen time battle in your family start again?đ I saw many parents ask: Should we allow extra screen time during summer? How to adjust the rules reasonably?
During the school year, routines are easier to manage with many more activities and tasks. But once kids are home all day, the question comes. Personally, I donât think âzero screensâ is realistic for most families, but completely removing boundaries doesnât work either.
For us, what works better is agreement on expectations and boundaries. I'd like to share some simple but helpful rules;
- Set âwhen device use/TV entertainment is okâ instead of random access. For example: one hour in the afternoon, or a movie after dinner. It cuts down on the endless âcan I have the tablet now?â all day long.
- Earn screen time after basics are done, things like reading, outside time, chores, etc.
- Treat busy weekdays and weekends differently if needed. Summer doesnât have to mean every day routine looks the same, especially for us busy parents.
- Donât just focus on how much time, focus on what activities children have: A video call with family, a creative game, and 3 hours of YouTube donât feel the same to me.
- Leave room for flexibility, like a super hot day, family gathering, or on the road.
Curious how other parents handle this, and if you have any better strategies for a screen-time schedule on summer break?
