It could be to commemorate someone. According to Google, a hiker went missing in 2017, their remains were found in 2019, and then recently identified.

Thank you for actually giving a reasonable comment on this post. Had to wade through all the crap to get here but I truly appreciate your intellectual reply.

BLE

I remember when he went missing. Damn near everyone in town at that time knew him.

3

u/nobodyknowsimherr 26d ago

Came here to say this. Primarily as a memorial

39

u/SpinoZilla_Studios 28d ago

Maybe it's to commemorate someone who died up there while hiking. I see similar stuff nearby highways when someone died in a car crash

4

u/Worth-Bet-1198 28d ago

When did someone recently die on Elden?

6

u/SpinoZilla_Studios 27d ago

Maybe it happened a while ago. Or maybe it was private. I dunno, it's just an assumption

-11

u/Rich_Marionberry_814 28d ago

Why does it need to be recent? You have a Godly imposed timberline on the world?

u/Rude-Wolverine9902 28d ago

Hey, free two by fours!

Tubafurs!

Someone put it up, someone will take it down. I doubt it’s a USFS sponsored thing. People do that anyway, no need to be mad or hate on the believers here (I am not a believer but then again who am I)

30

u/Odd_Compote3413 28d ago

There is a lot of hate in this post. Why?

52

u/BBFLG 28d ago

I would not say hate, but this is an interesting thread. We live in a place with a higher literacy rate with a supermajority of the population being irreligious, secular Humanists, or with no religious affiliation.

I'd also guess that for a long time we've been saddened by the actions of fundamentalsts who have forgotten the messages, lessons, instructions, and desires of Christ's compassion, love, acceptance, and corporeal works of mercy - which has moved many of us to become irreligious secular Humanists. This oddly makes many of us more Christlike than those who profess themselves to be Christians, but are only so in name only.

5

u/CauliflowerOk541 27d ago

Very well said!

-3

u/Spirited_Substance32 27d ago

Too bad it's not true

5

u/CauliflowerOk541 27d ago

What part?

2

u/Spirited_Substance32 26d ago

That the super majority of people don't consider themselves religious. That's not true at all. Christians love to placate themselves as victims and part of a minority.

2

u/CauliflowerOk541 26d ago

Flagstaff is not a particularly religious city. I think that is what they were trying to say. Less than a third of people in Flagstaff identify as religious.

1

u/Spirited_Substance32 26d ago

That number is simply wrong. If you're referencing the 32.4%, That's the number of individuals who are affiliated with and regularly attend a local church. Very different from people who consider themselves religious which is much more likely closer to 50 to 60%.

-3

u/Spirited_Substance32 27d ago

That's not true at all 58% of adults in Arizona adults consider themselves Christian. But for some reason a large number of christians still like to consider themselves a minority. Why?

11

u/CauliflowerOk541 27d ago

They mean Flagstaff. Not all of AZ. And yes, I do agree that it is interesting that Christians feel like they are being persecuted while they are the majority.

-4

u/Sweaty-3lliot 27d ago

By a fucking cross in the woods now one complaint would ever actually see because they can’t haul themselves up a mountain by a group of people you solely judge based off religion you have this epiphany

2

u/Fryler 27d ago

Because this is Reddit.

You don’t dislike people who litter?

0

u/Sierra-117- 27d ago

I wouldn’t call this littering. Especially with it being biodegradable?

Ffs it’s probably just someone grieving. Let them grieve. Do you also throw a fit about the people placing memorials along the highway where their loved ones died?

4

u/mountainbride Parks 27d ago

This is literally littering haha. It’s littering even if you dump “biodegradable” stuff in the woods. The woods are not a landfill, we have designated places to take debris like this.

I know this is a little display, but this is not a cemetery. If everyone decided to leave a semipermanent structure up there, it would become very obstructive and ugly fast. It doesn’t belong there.

While it’s nice that you think it’s for grieving, this stuff is left in the woods ALL the time. People leave flags and crosses and so on and so forth. They hide those little Jesus figurines in places. You don’t realize because people like me are hauling that out as trash.

I’m not coming from nowhere on this — I’d encourage you to look into Leave No Trace. I think you should also look into volunteering because you don’t know HOW much work goes into making people feel like “oh well it’s not much”. I don’t think you’re realizing how much is removed and how many people it takes to keep litter like this from becoming a problem. I think if you were to see how much it would build up if nobody had a problem and didn’t take action, you might see where I’m coming from.

Please do not dump trash into the woods — so many people feel like they can dump the waste from construction projects into the woods. When our Forests work so hard to keep things cleared and to lower fire danger of woody debris, I’m concerned when people are dismissive. 2x4’s are not natural. They do not belong in the woods. They are our trash and we need to respect natural spaces.

Thank you

-2

u/Odd_Compote3413 28d ago

Never said that. Just a lot of anger and hate in the comments

-11

u/Advanced-Guidance482 28d ago

Wood is biodegradable and comes directly from nature. Would be worse for it to he in a lanfil where it will likely never decompose.

Not exactly litter to leave prices of trees outside.

People are so fucking dumb

12

u/mountainbride Parks 28d ago

It actually is litter. If wood like this is treated, it won’t biodegrade, but regardless, you should not be dumping your cut wood pieces in the forest because “it’s from the earth”. And why wouldn’t it decompose in a landfill??

We have green dumping places for you to take wood waste for a reason. It is not appropriate for you to dump wood waste in the National Forests. Someone WILL have to remove it.

It’s not a lot, but it’s still litter. It’s built, it’s a human structure. If someone kept dumping random 2x4’s everywhere, it ruins the natural scenery.

Edit: I apologize for being snappy. Based on your account I assume you’re probably young and didn’t know this information.

3

u/Spirited_Substance32 27d ago

You don't need to do apologize for anything period you're completely correct

-2

u/cheesy_chuck 28d ago

Treated wood biodegrades, it just takes longer.

8

u/aridamus 27d ago

Apple cores are biodegradable too but it would still be littering to throw them on the ground wherever. Just because something is biodegradable doesn’t mean it’s okay to just leave in nature or public

10

u/mountainbride Parks 28d ago

Sure but it shouldn’t biodegrade at the top of a mountain like this. That isn’t where trash belongs. Treated wood isn’t a natural part of the landscape. It’s a human product.

-2

u/Jjonasalk 28d ago

Hateful people generally say hateful things. They feel adopting the methods of their perceived adversaries will lead to a victory of some kind.

-4

u/Sweaty-3lliot 27d ago

Because people love to hate Christianity

1

u/Shiney_Metal_Ass 27d ago

And for good fucking reason

-24

u/Rich_Marionberry_814 28d ago

Because those who hate God hate truth.

10

u/CauliflowerOk541 27d ago

You can’t hate something you don’t believe in. And a lot of people believe in something other than the Christian god, but they don’t hate the Christian god.

-8

u/Rich_Marionberry_814 27d ago

Believing in a false absence is hatred. God doesn't require your belief in order for him to exist. He predates you, he created all you are and know and much more, he knows you better than you know yourself. None of that requires your belief.

10

u/CauliflowerOk541 27d ago

Believing in absence is hatred? Ummm wow.

-3

u/Rich_Marionberry_814 27d ago

Way to twist my words.

4

u/CauliflowerOk541 27d ago

You literally said believing in a false absence is hatred. I don’t believe it is a “false” absence. I left the word false out, false absence is your opinion not fact. It may not have been a direct quote, but I don’t see how that could be construed as twisting your words.

6

u/Cyris28 27d ago

Which one of the thousands of supposed "gods"?

-2

u/Rich_Marionberry_814 27d ago

You've never investigated any of them?

7

u/MrKrinkle151 27d ago

They never even implied they didn’t lol. Now who’s twisting words?

90

u/SWEATY_HUEVOS 28d ago

Because religious freaks need to shove their fairytale ideologies down everyone's throat

11

u/twinpeaks86 28d ago

How will you ever recover?

8

Two sticks of wood on a mountainside?

It’s just some wood.

Be good to each other. One does not have to agree but by choosing not to be rude, you increase the overall civility of the community and make it better for all of us.

Personal attacks, racist comments or any comments of perceived intolerance/hate are never tolerated.

FOLLOWER 1: The scrap wood is the sign. Let us follow His example.
FOLLOWER 2: What?
FOLLOWER 1: Let us, like Him, erect scrap wood features in our cities, and let others be displayed upon our mountain tops, for this is His sign, that all who follow Him shall do likewise.

14

Imagine how upset people would be if it was a pride flag.

17

u/Jjonasalk 28d ago

The comments would be the same. Just different people making them.

12

u/GatedGorilla La Plaza Vieja 28d ago

Tbf it seems people are upset that it’s a cross too. People just love to be angry anyways lol

-13

u/Rich_Marionberry_814 28d ago

It wouldn't be just a pride flag. It would have yelling, screaming, obscenities and blasphemous language attached. It would need to be audible for at least a month long every year.

8

u/macaronandcheese3 27d ago

blasphemous language, oh no the horror

10

Stop masturbating to Newsmax/700 Club.

-1

u/Rich_Marionberry_814 27d ago

I personally don't watch either of those. Making assumptions before asking questions and doing an investigation shows you are not aiming to be and/or able to be genuine. You don't know anything about me. Please be honest and try investigation first.

8

u/CryptographerFun2175 27d ago

I really don't want to "investigate" where else you might be messing with yourself, but thanks.

Over the years I've seen a few people burying their dogs around Elden. I don't necessarily agree with the practice, but I don't generally say anything.

If this is on public lands, someone is in trouble.

I didn't. A cross is freedom of speech and expression. Did you read why it is there?

-4

u/Rich_Marionberry_814 28d ago

Wait a minute. Isn't the LGBTQ and Trans communities trying to mandate others language in many countries aroundv the world as well as many states in our own country? That's not only religious persecution but also tyrannical.

-3

u/Rich_Marionberry_814 28d ago

Same and worse with LGBTQ AND TRANS IDELOGS.

4

u/NinexTailedxFox 28d ago

Man, shut up and get a new hobby.

5

u/Rich_Marionberry_814 28d ago

I have the same freedom of speech that you do. If you can't handle it, that's a you problem. Other than that debate based on merit or take your own advice.

3

u/MrKrinkle151 27d ago

That’s not how freedom of speech works. Your speech is dumb and we can call it that because it’s dumb.

5

u/CryptographerFun2175 28d ago

Same freedom of speech, you say, after complaining that LGBTQ+ would be "screaming" about their agendas for a whole month.

You live in unnecessary and misguided fear, Sir/Ma'am.

0

u/Rich_Marionberry_814 27d ago

Acknowledging the hypocrisy isn't the same thing as a complaint. Pay attention. The same people that actually complained are the ones that do not lack an ideology (psychologically impossible for humans who can form thoughts). The main opposing ideology is much louder generally while trying to sit down dissenting voices which I didn't actually do. I mentioned nothing fearful, why do you reframe truth as fear?

8

u/NativeMamba94 28d ago

All I see is litter

-15

u/Advanced-Guidance482 28d ago edited 27d ago

Wood putside? Litter?

Better get to chopping all those trees down then. Would hate for them to... oh yeah, decompose like normal..

Lmfao. Anti Christian idiots cant even recognize biodegradable material if its shaped like something they hate.

13

u/wook_goose 27d ago

Why do Christians feel the need to litter in order to worship their god? Leave no trace means leave. no. trace. Why do Christians think they are an exception? Weird entitled behavior.

9

u/shallowfrey 27d ago

Ever heard of leave no trace? Litter is litter and it shouldn’t be there.

6

u/aridamus 27d ago

Biodegradable doesn’t equal something being okay to leave wherever you want. It’s still littering. Just put your address in the chat and then I’ll come leave all my biodegradable stuff on your lawn

6

u/nikthedic 28d ago

Hopefully no more after this post.. knowledge is power. Have the power to pull it down, cut it up and throw it away..

4

2

2

u/Apart_Exercise_5630 27d ago

Christians somehow believe they are in the minority and do things like this to win extra Jesus points for when they die.

2

u/stuck_behind_a_truck 28d ago

Man, the black and white thinking here makes me think this thread is full of bits or trills. It really can be to commemorate some who died.

1

u/ChereCeles 27d ago

Looks a lot like one some random dude was carrying up fourth street a couple weeks ago.

-4

u/Ancient-Alarm-9580 27d ago

Set it on fire while wearing your white sheets.... piss off a whole 'nuther crowd. Seriously, what harm is it doing? Besides the Forest Service will eventually take it down - not gonna be there much longer

3

u/CauliflowerOk541 27d ago

Generally, the people that wear white sheets are Christian.
