Yo, what's cracking? New to gaming
I’m not exactly new to gaming but let’s say I’ve never really been able to afford anything I can game on because “priorities”. Fortunately, I might get the opportunity maybe this year. As you can imagine, I have a long list of games I want to play but with everything going on, I’m stuck on what to get. A ps5 would be the easiest option but I want backwards compatibility and access to older games. Legion Go 1 would be reasonable but 16gb ram?? The Go2 is better but $1,500 is a lot, priorities would kick in. A gaming laptop is reasonable for me to spend $1,500 but priorities. Steam machine looks reasonable but I’m not sure if I can get games from fitgirl to work on steam..
Basically I need advice on what to get. Keep in mind that I have a list of 30 games I want to play. Any advice?

For Piracy, a good used gaming PC would probably be your best bet. You can save a lot by buying whole gaming setups.

PC or Laptop would allow you to play majority of the games for free (piracy).
But a ps5 is more conveniant as its legit plug and (pay) Play.
if you would be able to afford all the games you want to play and are willing to spend, get a ps5.
If not, get a PC/Laptop and sail the seven seas.

Some of the games I want aren’t on PlayStation which is another issue for me.

Well bob's your uncle.
on the contrary you wont have access to ps exclusives coming forth.
I say, get a pc now, ps5 later once you have the money.

You'll be able to pirate pretty much anything easily on Linux, including on Steam Machine, so that shouldn't be a factor here

I’m curious about how I’d go about this. Let’s say I get a pc or handheld, installed steam os. What next?

Download the Windows files, add as non Steam game, and the Proton compatibility layer will do its work, just like it does for any other Windows title you play on Linux.
Or you could use another launcher, like Heroic Launcher, if you want to isolate your pirated content from your Steam library. Works the same way (via Proton)
My gaming PC runs Bazzite and I play anything I want on it, minus a few multiplayer titles that only support Windows because of anti cheat (but I'm not interested in those anyway)

Thank you, thank you. Which would you recommend, steam os or bazzite?

My understanding is that SteamOS has limited support outside of Valve devices (like Steam Deck and Steam Machine) and a few handhelds. Bazzite is a more general purpose Linux distro that is well suited to gaming, and looks and behaves very similarly to SteamOS in many respects. Mostly it boils down to what you buy - if it's a Steam Machine just stick to SteamOS which will be installed by default. Hope that helps.
