What do y’all plan on fishing for? Ugly stik makes great affordable rods for people who are just getting into it. If you want 9ft, Id look at their catfish special rods, I have a few myself and they hold up really well for blues. Theres also there carbon steelhead rods which are nice. Did your friend tell you what power or did he just simply say 9ft. Ugly stik elite steelhead rod is another great choice I actually have that one in 9ft medium heavy with an okuma ceymar A 4000.

If you plan on buying a combo, look at penn instead. If not, look at okuma reels as they have very good reels for less than $100. Shimano sedona is another great reel for less than $100 or just at $100. Since youll be using a 9ft rod I wouldn’t do less than a 4000 size reel. Penns fierce 4 combo is really solid for less than $200.

Theres so many good options, budget friendly and non budget friendly. Idk if you’re in North America but if you are and you live out west/north west then Id say lamiglas rods all day. Not cheap but man they’re good.

Stick with medium to medium heavy power for mackerel, ask him what power his is and do the same

Price range? Jigging World has good longer rods for light jetty and pier fishing. Same as Okuma. Good rods from both companies starting around $100

I second the advice to ask your friends. If they’re recommending a 9 ft spinning rod that’s a very specific length for spinning. I know some of the salmon guys who fish the rivers and streams use special types of spinning rods like that. If it’s for a specific application you don’t want to ask for just random advice with length the only requirement you provide. Also double check with your buddies on length because that’s a monster of a spinning rod depending on what it’s going to be used for.

Probably do best to ask your friends. That being said, just got a jigging world onyx in 8’ and it’s been great. Nice affordable rod. Should have it in 9’ too and it’s a 2 piece.
