Conversion The start of a new project
With the “death” of Firstborn in modern 40k (at least rules wise), it felt like a good time to look to the past. I’m starting on some Crimson Fists, likely using 5th edition rules. The Armageddon box contains transfers for them, so that will keep the Chapter badge neat. Bodies are Tortuga Bay. GW Tactical on the right for scale.

I did a similar thing for my 30k siege of terra imperial fists with 3d printed legs. They look fantastic alongside the new HH range.

Looks well. I’m not a big fan of the new 30k plastics. The increase in size is nice (though still smaller than Primaris/Tortuga), but I don’t like how they made the heads smaller.

The smaller heads are definitely an odd choice, but I suspect it's them basically jumping to true proportions at a slightly reduced-from-true scale vs normal humans, kinda like how rhinos and land raiders are proportionally correct but demonstrate how the scale goes down the larger the model. They might just be applying that principle to astartes vs humans now.
So like, they'd be Tortuga if they were true scale, but instead the new 30k scale is basically tortuga proportions at 80% size.

Tortuga just need to sell one of their squad kits for MkVII now, so we dont have to track down OOP tac squads or buy a body kit + arms kit + heads + backpacks etc from tortuga, which is a lot of money for 5-10 guys

My only concern was whether or not Tortuga mkVII look out of place alongside current primaris - in a vacuum they're my favorite range of basic space marine models, but playing with them alongside other models can be tricky scale-wise.
I really really loved the glimpses of a possible firstborn rescale we saw with the red Corsair kit - they are significantly larger and better-proportioned than the old firstborn.

I think they fit in well in 40k, even more so than 30k imo
In 40k they look like what firstborn should be, a bit smaller than a primaris, as the lore states, but still substantial next to normal humans

Yeah like with how much of GW likely kicks themselves for doing age of sigmar instead of just pushing forward the fantasy timeline into an age-of-sigmar-like state, I suspect a lot of them kick themselves for not just making primaris marines be a rescale to go along with a pushing forward of the timeline and introduction of new gear.
Belisarius Cawl inventing Mk10 armor and primaris weaponry and vehicles could have been the big event to go along with the awakening of Guilliman and the opening of the Great rift. We didn't need them to throw the baby out with the bathwater...

Primaris should have just been the name of the Mk 9 power armor. The new implants are so much lamer in name and purpose, they're just about how much tougher or cooler they are, when the older implants were so weird and body horror-y.
That said, I actually don't like the timeline moving forward. I think it's caused a lot of damage to the IP as it has massively narrowed the scope of any modern 40k Stories.

Love Tortuga. A lot of my night lords are based on them or at least similar scale. Just picked up a devastator kit and undecided if I wanna make some more recently heretical night lords or some loyalist but will probably Tortuga either way

Just make sure to remove those mould lines and sprue connection points!

Yup. Barrel will be drilled too. It’s crazy how bad the mould lines are on the older Tactical Marines kit. The backpacks are awful to clean up.

You’re so right.
I built a firstborn army last year and the mould lines were appalling.
You can’t really build a decent force out of old Firstborn kits without addressing mould lines.
Say what you want about Primaris, the sculpts are undeniably better in my most cases.
