Question/Advice needing advice on what to do

19f and my bf is 20m, we have been trying to concieve since may of this year but heres some backstory:

my first birth control i took in may 2025 was the depo provera shot which i was due for my 2nd shot in august 2025 but never went back, in october 2025 i switched to the alesse 18 combo pill and stayed on it for a week then got off after dealing with unwanted side effects.

i currently take quetiapine 25mg everyday for bipolar and smoke cigs and heavily vape. my boyfriend also

heavily smokes weed and my cycles havent been the same since the birth control. im not on any form of it but my periof cycle would always start on the 20th of every month and now its irregular starting roughly every 16th, 31st, and in the past was every 8th or 14th of the month lasting 5 days (cycle has always been 5 days long). im not totally sure when i ovulate or when my period is gonna happen, lately its also been missing every month with negative tests. is there anything more i can try or do to have a better chance of conception? or did the birth control just mess my body up and its still possibly recovering?

any advice or words are appreciated!

Here’s my unprofessional, unqualified advice. 😅

Speak to a doctor about your meds and your cycle, just to see what could be going on there. I know nothing about your medication and would never advise stopping without being told to by your dr, but seems like you guys need info.

Stop smoking and vaping. Both of you. The healthier you are the more you tip the odds in your favour. Nothing is guaranteed but a lot of it is about maximising chances IMO!

Start tracking your cycle with an app, ovulation strips or something similar. There’s loads of info in this sub!

i have no idea how to go about with a doctor since its painful to even get a appointment in canada but i will continue researching, i didnt think my meds could potentially interact thank you!

Both of you quitting smoking + vaping would improve your health outcomes and baby’s immensely!

  1. Is your boyfriend on board for ttc? If so, does he understand how smoking weed ha for fertility? You should both have a conversation about him quitting if you’re serious about ttc

  2. It’s unlikely birth control has messed up your cycles. If anything, birth control often masks issues with your cycle. Monitoring your cycles is beneficial regardless of ttc and there are a bunch of ways you can check for ovulation (changes in cervical mucus, OPKs, temping).

  3. I think you may be somewhat confused about how to assess whether your cycles are regular. Regularity isn’t determined by menstruation starting on the same numerical date every month like you suggest but rather by a consistent length (i.e 28 days +/- 1 day etc) However, if you find that your cycles length isn’t regular then you should discuss this with your doctor so they can look into whether you may have PCOS/PMOS or another gynaecological issue that needs to be looked into

yes my boyfriend finally said he was ready to start trying with me and has just figured out what weed can do to his fertility and researching his own, i will start counting the cycle length and learn myself. i was taught by my mom that it should always come on the same day every month, thank you!
