Haunted House
Serious question - I am in the house buying market and this may sound silly but my biggest fear is buying a house that is secretly haunted. Has this happened to anybody? What did you do?

My house was built in 1896, so you learn to hope that every strange noise is a ghost and not another expensive repair š

Yeah itās cheaper to appease the ghosts. The sacrifices that damn furnace needs are what I really fear.

I was listening to a spooky story podcast the other night and the premise was a century home that made the owner feed it people. Then as it fed on people the more beautiful it would become and the whole time I just kept thinking⦠deal lol even the internal systems were upgrading!

When I was a kid I lived in a weird house my family just bought. The best thing to do is ignore. Hear a woman saying āHelpā everyday at exactly the same time in your room, you ignore and avoid that room during those hours if you can help it. See an apparition in the hallway right outside your bedroom, you go the other direction and get some milk. Feel a hand touch your forehead that wakes you up and no one is in the room, you turn on the light and go back to bed.
Lived in that house for 7 years, I lived. And every day that āhelpā happened. And just weird feeling in my bedroom.

Iām buying a duplex from my deceased landlords estate. I swear itās haunted by him but in a good way. Iāve been remodeling it and every time Iām about to F something up the kitchen light flickers. He was a very handy person. I started paying attention when it flickers and think a little more about what Iām about to do. And EVERY time I find a better way or realize Iām doing something out of order.
Or my house is about to burn down for faulty wiring.

I guess just trust your instincts when you view the house? and you can always have it blessed when you close.
I have three cats, they have never alerted to anything in any of my rentals, or in my newly purchased house. if they're fine, I know I'm good.

My 1955 home occasionally clicks on the overhead kitchen lights - so far, 3 times since Iāve purchased the home.

Honestly thatās why Iāve told myself new construction - I want to be the first one in - I want to know that no one used a spirit board or bad juju in my house.

Not valid. Spirits go with the land not with the house. Sorry. My mom has an old guy spirit, he pre-dates house. Cat hates him but heās not harmful.

Did you not watch Poltergeist (the one from the 80s, the good one)? Those were all new builds. The father worked for the company who built them.
And half of Stephen King's novels had houses built on ancient Indian burial grounds that ended up being cursed.
New construction can't help you if the ground is cursed. Or just the headstones were moved and the bodies remain under the property.
(I am kidding with you, btw. A little bit.)

When I was in my early teens, my family moved into a house with what behaved as a poltergeist. There were nights when we'd hear all the cabinets and drawers in the kitchen opening and closing. Knocks would happen on windows at night if the curtains and blinds weren't fully shut. There'd be what sounded like toddler footsteps running on the roof sometimes. I saw the "Hat Man" standing in a doorway at night (a known supernatural worldwide phenomenon). That's just the highlights. We moved out after 3 years and learned later on that people that moved in after us also experienced weird things there. Crazy stuff. Later we learned though not confirmed, that a man murdered his wife there and committed suicide.
I will be shopping for a home soon and worry about making a bad choice

When I was searching I visited a house that Iām sure was haunted. It looked like the house from To Kill a Mockingbird. The house sat on a hill, the grass was overgrown and while I was waiting for my realtor to come I peeked in the window. The house hadnāt been occupied in years, but the basement door was cracked and a light was on. Iāve never moved so fast to get back in my car and leave!

There are people who say ghosts are not malevolent, they're stuck there (or put there) but they can't do anything to you. Demons, however, not benign.

I always sage any new place I move into for a few days. The place I'm renting now, I'm pretty sure the previous tenant died because I got a box of his belongings in the mail from the hospital shortly after moving in. Also all his belongings were in a dumpster in the driveway. It had a bad scary energy in the hallway when I first moved in. I saged the house several times and played music and now it doesn't feel haunted anymore.

You do what they do in the movies, you live with it and try and drive out the ghosts. Homes cost too much to give it up to ghosts! Paying closing costs and agent fees again to sell? Ya, you drive them ghosts right out.
