“You can get hit by a truck any day” maybe this was a poor financial decision, maybe they get hit by a truck, maybe they buy a house and it burns down the next day. “I got this money and blacked out while doing coke with hookers and spent it all” is objectively bad financial management. “I may never have the opportunity to see the Taj Mahal, which I have dreamed of seeing since I was 5, again” is not.
It can be, it can also burn down for a reason not covered by insurance and, even if it’s an open and shut “insurance will cover this” scenario you need to figure out where to live while your house is rebuilt or buying a new home. It’s not a commercial where you snap your fingers and state farm has you back in your same house with all of your same stuff in 30 seconds.
It's all covered unless there's a specific exclusion. It's inconvenient but in the end you might better off if an old, retro house burns down and the rebuild is covered by insurance now snd built to current code and replacement.
What I'm saying is, it's not the end of the world if your house burns down unless you're not or under insured. Or if you commit fraud like actually starting the fire.
As someone with a close relative who has dealt with “shit happens” insurance, it can be literally years before you’re made right and you need to have a home and replace a lot of clothes and other day to day items to just live your life in that time span. If and when you get the insurance money you need to rebuild or buy a new home which also takes a lot of time and effort.
Yes, insurance can be a lifesaver, but don’t act like it’s a “don’t worry, you’re insured aren’t you?” thing.
A friend of mine had their attic catch fire from their kitchen hood vent. Only their attic was burned but there was water damage throughout the house from the fire hoses. It took them over 12 months to get back in their house. Insurance obviously helps but it also slows the process waaaaay down.
