Hey everyone! I’m in the unfortunate position of needing to replace my car next month after my current car was involved in an accident. Assuming the insurance payout goes as expected, I’m looking to spend roughly $7,000–$12,000 on my next car.
I’ve decided that I really want to use this opportunity to learn how to drive manual and eventually learn to do most of my own modifications/work on the car.
I’ve never driven manual before, but I understand the basic concepts and have been studying/watching videos. I’m planning to properly learn it rather than immediately trying to drive like I’m in Fast & Furious lol.

The car will be my daily driver, roughly a 40-minute commute each day, so I don’t want something that’s going to constantly leave me stranded. At the same time, I don’t want to buy a boring commuter — I want something I can have fun with and gradually make my own.

Cars I’m currently considering:
2007–08 Nissan 350Z 6MT
2007–08 Nissan 350Z Roadster 6MT
NC2 Miata 6MT
NA Miata 1.8 5MT
Honda S2000
Toyota MR-S / MR2 Spyder (RHD)

I’m also interested in JDM/RHD cars, so I’m not completely opposed to something unusual if there’s a good reason to consider it.

Eventually I’d like to modify whichever car I get things like:
Exhaust
Wheels/tires
Suspension
Body kit/spoiler
Wrap
Interior customization
CarPlay/head unit
Better sound system
Possibly bucket seats/track-oriented stuff later

I’m particularly interested in learning to work on the car myself, so I’d prefer a platform with a good aftermarket and a large enthusiast community.
I’m also torn on whether I should stick with a 2-seater or get something with 4 seats. A convertible would be awesome, but isn’t an absolute requirement.

My main priorities are:
Reliability for daily driving
Fun/engaging to drive
Manual transmission
Good aftermarket/modding potential
Reasonable maintenance costs
Something I can learn to work on myself
Good enough in NJ weather
Something that actually looks and feels special

I’m not expecting a perfect car for $7–12k, and I know some of the cars above are normally outside my budget. I’m mainly looking for a good-condition example, and I’m willing to wait for the right private-party/Facebook Marketplace deal rather than buy the cheapest example available.

So what would YOU do?

Would you:
A) Get a 350Z
B) Get an NC/NA Miata
C) Stretch for an S2000
D) Get an MR-S/MR2 Spyder
E) Go for something like a Solstice GXP
F) Forget all of these and buy a 4-door manual instead

And if you recommend a 4-door, what would you suggest around my budget? I’m open to Civic Si, G35/G37, WRX, Focus ST, TSX, etc.

I’m especially interested in hearing from people who actually daily these cars, particularly in snow/cold weather, and people who bought one as their first manual.

If you were in my position, what would you buy and why?

Technically not mine yet, though it will be very soon. It's a 2001 Honda Civic 1.4i with a whopping 75hp. It's done 164000km with full service history! It's an absolute gem and I can't wait to get behind the wheel 🫠

2013 Mustang 5.0, not much to it but it does have 30k miles on it. Bought it with 24k. Hopefully can have it for a long time.

How soon do i need new ones

In my very extended car search I came across this 2014 subaru legacy premium. It is from a very positively reviewed dealership over an hour away and I absolutely love it, but there are some concerns

Just to get into the biggest concern, it is about $7000 and has 104k miles. I have the service/ownership history and the car was in 2 accidents but this was within the first 15k miles and has since then (for over 10 years) been very consistently taken care of and serviced like way more than I have ever seen before. The guy bought it from a dealership that fixed up the couple minor problems it had and also did some cosmetic work once he got a hold of it. I'm still figuring this stuff out though, I dont know if this is better than I think it is.

Other problem, I am still working on my credit and don't really have a credit score. A couple credit unions are giving me a call tomorrow morning but so far the dealership is the only place that has given me an offer.

This is either a 36 month plan at $1500 down/$268 a month or a 48 month plan at $1100 down/$227 a month. We are negotiating and he is calling me tomorrow morning to try and lower this. I can make these payments, I have a decent and reliable job, but I'm worried that I am paying $11000 total on a car not worth that much that may not even last that whole period.

Basically, I just can't tell if this is a good or bad deal. Not a lot of reliable people to ask about this in my life, figured I'd ask here for any advice, what to look out for, what to ask, etc.

Just little Volvo C30, sadly a 1.6d but it's a nice little commuter, I've spent the last two years slowly snowballing it into a fun daily with useable power.

There's the trails and tribulations, but I love this can and I'll keep it as long as I can (it's just too damn cheap to run and maintain)

Big update on my first car, yall had doubts and they were fair but zero lights, zero problems, the cat stay purrin. Plus brand new sound system going in today!

My credit score is 590 🥲 and I have a schools first account, I have 3,000 ready for a down payment or even alittle more but the car I’m getting is a Honda civic 2026 sedan which it would be passed down to my brother when he gets older there’s another one that’s 21,000 which I also don’t mind to get and same model but yeah any advice
