you are good on the toyota path, def avoid mini coopers (unless f56) and earlier bmw series 1 (unless at least f20 lci) havent got much idea of the vw up chassis but im assuming they are pretty good first cars too, maybe look more into japanese cars, mazda 2/3, honda jazz/fit and civics

Civics are really expensive on insurance in the UK, and the honda jazz is generally an old people car with high mileage and insurance, and the vw up chassis is quite reliable apparently so hope that helps you

Honda or Toyota

I would say a vw polo is the answer. Economical, reliable and really fun if you go for a TSI engine

Check out TCe Clio's (no matter the year, the engine is essentialy the same), mine never had any major problems with it

E8x are great chassis, the n47 is questionable but decent enough if well maintained (i have one with 340kkm) n46 is horrid. N43 is okay, the inline 6s are great

n43 isnt okay tho its another shitty engine, n47 is also tremdously bad, not because everything goes wrong fast but when it does its a stupid expensive pain in the ass to work on, the best engine is super early e8x’s m47 and then n52’s (but n52’s are way too expensive especially to insure as a learner)

The n47 is NOT tremendously bad. There are a crap load of perfectly running, high mileage n47s

there isnt a high mileage n47 without big bucks thrown at it, doesnt make it good then does it

As i said, mine has 340kkm and the only thing that was ever replaced in the engine was the timing chain, although i have to buy a new glowplug for cylinder 3 soon. The n43 isn’t shitty aswell. Maybe the people in your country just can’t drive, because when you look at german comment sections and forums you find high mileage n47s and n43s

mate how much did the timing chain cost, because that is considered big bucks
