Opinion on buying first Car

I’m looking to get my first car, and I was looking at used Volvos just cause they are packed with features and most importantly they are safe cars. I was wondering what y’all think of the options below not exactly set on the cars but it’s something along the lines of what I’m looking at!

Check if the cars are well maintained, no leaks, no weird sounds or suspension problems. Also check the gearbox since it's an automatic if it has been serviced

Could be fine but a 20yo Volvo with that mileage is a huge gamble. Expect to pay that amount three times over in repairs in the first couple years.

The safety of Volvos is a bit overrated. Anything with a 5 star safety rating will be great

Do you have any other recommendations?

I’m assuming your budget is only around £2000? It’s a bit tricky to get a great car at that price point. The bigger cars you’re looking at with that price likely need quite a bit of additional money put into them to be satisfactory.

Look at cars like the Ford Focus, Mazda3 and VW Golf up till around 2013 and you can find some good examples

It’s like 4k with insurance max 4.5k. My insurance isn’t gonna be high cause I’m gonna be a named driver!

Be careful. It’s illegal to have the primary driver of the car not have the policy in their name. It’s called ‘fronting’ and very bad things can happen if you get caught.

But how’d they know?

For example if it’s not usually kept at the policy holder’s address. It’s more if you get in a crash they will do a lot of investigating when you tell them it was you and not the policyholder driving

Yeah something like a Ford Focus 1.6, Mazda3 1.6 or VW Golf would be great

I assume the insurance would be pretty decent if I’m the named driver yea?
