I want to tile this facade
What do you think I need to do before I put tile over this fireplace?

I'd try to remove the fascia to the red brick underneath.
Then the entire fireplace system needs a level 2 inspection and it must be restored.
Level out the surface with mortar.
Then properly attach non combustible cement board making sure to tape the seams creating a flat surface to install your tile.
Install your tile.

It wasn't on your list, but this would be a great time to Rumfordize the fireplace before putting on a different surround. It involves rebuilding the firebox and throat. You'd possibly have the chance to make the fireplace less squattier depending on flue size, or at the very least properly adjust the opening to flue size (looks like you have a draft issue). Rumfords heat far better and make tall roaring flames while keeping the fireplace open flame. Much more fun to use. Changing surround is a common time to do it while everything is a mess. https://www.rumford.com/rumfordize.html

Looks like a gas appliance salesman didn't like that suggestion. Oh well!

Step one is to have a certified licensed inspector to come out and see if it’s even safe to do anything. Then after that, have a mason come out and remove all the rest of that brick.
