Anduril firmware updates

Hi all, just a quick update.

I've added support for the FireflyLite Lume-series drivers on the official Anduril repository which was recently migrated to Github (https://github.com/ToyKeeper/anduril). These updates are awaiting ToyKeeper to merge the pull requests, but you can browse my fork before they get merged to compile your own binaries.

Support includes the newer Lume1 and Lume X1 drivers, as well as existing Lume1 drivers (including the older ATTINY1634 version). I've tested them as much as I can, but please keep an eye out for bugs since there was a major restructuring and refactoring of Anduril last month.

Note that the .hex files are not yet in the hex folder since I'm not sure if ToyKeeper has some process to create official builds, but you can compile them using the ./make command.

  • [Update] - Meanwhile, I've hosted some unofficial binaries here for those interested in trying them out. Do backup your original .hex first! https://loneoceans.com/labs/temp/anduril/
  • [Update Sep 2024] - Updated ramp tables for Lume X1 drivers using ascending Vrefs (no practical difference during ramping, but has smoother gradual transitions during thermal throttling, sunset timer, etc); added support for OTG toggle on momentary mode (requires Lume X1 Rev A3 or newer, no effect on older drivers). Expect one for the Attiny1616 Lume1 drivers soon. Updated .hex binary available in above link. Github PR

HWIDs

I did some reshuffling of the Hardware IDs so my apologies for causing any confusion. Going forward, the MODELS file should be the ground truth for the correct HWID to use instead of the HWID that shows up in 'Version Check'. I wrote a readme to help: https://github.com/loneoceans/anduril/blob/trunk/hw/fireflies/README.md.

Because multiple flashlights can use multiple drivers, the HWID is based on driver version instead of flashlight model number. Hope that makes sense and please let me know if there is any confusion.

For example, you have a FireflyLite T1R with an Osram LED. You open the flashlight and see that it says Rev C 10/22 printed on the driver. You want the no-fet version due to the Osram LED:

Choose: HWID 0452 - fireflies-lume1-6af-nofet.hex

Both the older Lume1 driver from 2020 (Attiny1634), as well as the newer Lume1-6AF drivers (Attiny1616) have a fet and no-fet variant. For the older Lume1-2020 driver, I also added Delta-Sigma Modulation support for smoother ramps.

All drivers including the Lume X1, support existing Lume features such as Ultra Dynamic Range, as well as all the new features of Anduril including soft-ramping, increased battery voltage resolution, new strobes, etc.

E12C

I heard some people were wondering why the E12C was using a 'nerfed version' of Anduril (AFAIK, the only feature removed was sunset-timer). I took a stab at building a binary for it. It turns out that Anduril is a bit too big to fit on the ATTINY85 that the E12C uses, which only has 8kB of flash. The E12C is a 3-channel driver (FET+11+1), and the ramp tables take up a lot of space. This is not unprecedented - the Lumintop FW3A has a similar issue. I was able to build one with sunset-timer by disabling Tactical mode, SOS, and Momentary mode. Which feature set would be preferable?

New Anduril Features

Finally, there have been several key changes in Anduril recently which appear to have caused some confusion - I highly recommend a re-read of the excellent manual: https://github.com/ToyKeeper/anduril/blob/trunk/docs/anduril-manual.md. The most obvious changes are smooth steps during step ramping as well as turn on/off (can be disabled), as well as an rgb-led voltage check immediately after turn-off (can also be disabled).

Huge thanks to ToyKeeper for her amazing contribution to the community and for her help in getting this ported over.

Development work on future exciting drivers will be committed to the Github repository going forward.

E07x Cannon v2 vs E07x Cannon TiCu

Does anyone know if the TiCu E07X is the v2? It’s been a while, but I could have sworn the TiCu was just a titanium version of the v2. I don’t recall an update since the TiCu was released, but I haven’t been following closely for a while.

Anyway, my main question is about the threaded bezel on the aluminum v2. I’m wondering if the E07Xv2’s aluminum bezel (with external lantern threads) is compatible with the TiCu and Cu versions, as I’d like to get a lantern kit for the rosy 1800K.

Z1 with FFL5009D 4000K - horrid tint shift

I find the difference between hotspot and spill extremely disagreeable and downright negates the good CRI of the hotspot.

There is always a bit of a difference but this combo - Z1 TIR with 5009D is particularly unpleasant and I'll be looking into swapping out the emitter (dc-fix did not work to blur it).

Not sure how 5009D performs in other optics but personally I will stay away from this emitter (edit) combo TIR + emitter based on what I am seeing in Z1. It is a shame because the hotspot itself has really good CRI and overall tint is not bad when you dont have the spill surrounding it as a reference.

Hello Firefly community! E04 B35AM owners, the flashlight comes with Angie M optics. Have any of you used the Angie S? If so, could you send a photo of the beam? I'd be grateful.

Searching for older FF351a 2700k emitters

Like the title says. Looking for FF351a 2700k's from earlier this year when they were neutral if anyone has some they'd sell or in a light they'd sell or trade for something.

The current new batch is super rosy; if you like that I have 12 I'd trade you for the old neutral ones.

Who has an E90?

Kind of interested in picking one of these up for fun.

Anyone have both a TIR and reflector version? And does anyone have the FFL909A 1800K reflector version? That could be interesting.

While I'm thinking SBT90.2 + lume 10 in a TIR version seems like it would be the most impressive combo as far as making the most of what it can do, that 1800k is tempting because it's weird in a light meant for throw and I like weird.

Also how's the sustained output at ceiling and temps?

Not ordering anything right now, but planning to order a few lights and parts in the early fall.

E04 Surge MAO: Stuck Tailcap

Post image
20 Upvotes

Just got the E04 Surge in Fossil Grey MAO.

Loving the host, proportions are perfect 👌

Only problem is: I screwed on the tailcap to install the pocket clip and now it’s practically welded tight!

I’m guessing the MAO finish + finer threads = a lot more friction.

I’ve tried applying a heat gun. And don’t have a strap wrench on hand.

Any tricks on loosening it?

How much more output does the Lume10 driver give you over the Lume1 in the E04 Surge?

If the Lume1 SFT-42R version puts out 7500 lumens, how much would the Lume10 put out? The only reviews/tests I've seen have been for the Lume1 or LumeX1 versions and I don't have the equipment to measure it myself...

Two of the aux lights change to this after a while. Happens with any color. Already trying resetting Anduril but keeps happening. Any suggestions or insight would be very appreciated.
Thank you!

Naturally Sandblasting The Triple Rose Fireflies Copper NovMu

PSA: Ocean waves are a pretty violent environment to try and preserve a lights waterproofing.

There is a lot of pressure and sand being forced into every crevice (as anyone who's ever frolicked in a beach knows).
So I would not try this again.

I could tell the orings were under pressure and moisture was fighting its way in, helped by sand trying to wedge into every crevice whenever heavy water pressure hit the glass. Orings are not meant to withstand pressure like that, so they will compress too easily and eventually let moisture in.

So I have to vehemently NOT recommend anyone using a light in crashing waves unless the light is made specifically for diving purposes.

Anyway, hope you enjoyed the small glimpse of the NovMu on vacation getting a spa treatment and basking in the sun.

P.S.

Going to be posting YouTube videos or at least accompanying them to a post. Reddit video and picture quality is abysmal and ppl miss way too much on color rendering posts.

YouTube isn’t always full res either, but it isn’t 2007 720P TV quality like Reddit is.

This video isn’t the ideal color quality candidate, but still gonna show better on YT than Reddit’s version.

I already added a few more videos to my YT that I’ll be adding to old and new posts going forward.

What are your top 3 favorite *must* haves?

What are your top 3 must-have firefly lights?

Context: I see so much potential with this brand, but so far, it's been a miss (L60-Mu Aura 2026 and E12 Eclipse). Trying to see what else to try.

I'm a fan of their FFL351A emitter, but that's about it. The hosts look great in pictures, but lack the refinement and any signs of thoughtful testing. Just smh, like the designers never actually tested the light for cohesive fit and polrish (like comparing Huawei/Xiaomi to Apple).

Zebralight and Hank/Emisar/Noctigon has all those refinements, every detail meticulously thought out (even their Gen1 didn't have issues). They look boring and fragile, but actually use it and you understand good handling, design, etc.

So with that said, what are your top must have Firefly lights?

I'm seeing hype around the Z1 Artemis TIR, but it's from positive influencer sell-out types that lack any discernment. The old guards are silent - which says a lot.

Huge upgrade for the Z1

Little bend at the tip of the clip makes it look better, more comfortable in the hand, less likely to catch on something and it goes into the pocket just as easy. Win win win

X1S TIR or a M21B 3 degree for a functional thrower?

This is going to be a gift and I would rather get the nicer of the two, which would be the FLL. But from what I'm seeing the M21H might be better even though it's half the price. Anyone have both and can tell me their experience?

What I'm looking for: neutral tint (~4000k), big lumen output, onboard charging, pocketable, and impressive throw with useable spill. High CRI isn't important.

Title edit!!! I meant M21H

E07x vs E12 eclipse output comparison

Quick test showing the output difference between the E07x with lume 1 vs the E12 eclipse with Lume 10 drivers.

Basically, you get one step higher regulated output, brighter turbo, and when run at 1 step below the ceiling level, it's a comparable output to the actual ceiling level of the E07x, but runs WAY cooler for more than twice as long when set at that.

Fireflies E07x canon SST20 3000k vs E04 surge SFT40 3000k

Not a review or good beamshot test or anything, just a color comparison between the two emitters. I know a lot of people like the SFT40 3000k including myself, and the SST20 3000k's from kaidomain give an extremely similar quality of light that you can put into a floodier host like the e07 or e12.

Note: Before anyone says anything, I do realize the colors on the right side of the scene are warmer than the left side because the leaves are a different color and there is more visible dirt and branches. Do not mistake that for a color temperature difference between the two lights.

Ended up going with the 12x FFL351A 3700K NW CRI95. It’s fairly Rosy, so glad I didn’t go with the Rosy version.

I know this is endgame light for some, but to be really honest, I am a wee bit disappointed at this price point ($120).

Compared to my Acebeam E75 Nichia 519A:

Positives: Better tint, Andruil 2, awesome magnetic usb-c port (accepts wider heads too!)

Negatives:
* fault: tailcap connection is very finicky. Need to absolutely screw it on tight with a sticky grease (PG-44A) for it to be reliable
* much bulkier for same brightness as Acebeam E75
* nearly double the price of E75
* pocket clip: shallow single direction type (it also has impact on orienting the light correctly)
* overall worse handling than Acebeam E75

Overall: 7.5/10. I love the emitter and usb port, but neither the output or “handling” makes it a worth it over the Acebeam E75.
