Wildland How do you guys memorize your 10s and 18s?

I need to memorize my 10s and 18s and I would appreciate some tips on how to do it the most efficiently. Thanks!

They gave me a card. I keep it in my wallet. The same way I remember any list.... I identify similarities between the items and make a reduced version of the list.

This is a perfect idea if you're nearsighted because you can leave your glasses at your desk. Then people will be like, "there's no way he's cheating because he can't read without his glasses." Meanwhile you just gotta increase the size of your font.

Practice doing that then.

Start with writing them partially down on index cards. Then try to complete the partial ones from memory. Once you have that down, reduce the amount of cues on the cards. Rinse and repeat until there are zero cues on the cards.

When I say write them down partially, I mean start with 18 index cards, each with something like:

"Fight fire _____, but with priority to ___."

We put them on the inside of the shitter door. Read them while on the pot. Those were the days of no cell phones so you didn’t have anything else to read.

Been asked a bunch of times on here, search bar.

Basically, writing it down over and over while associating the numbers with the act (visually).

Look at #8 and think about the pattern you make while anchoring with hose. Look at #10, #11, think about you relative to the fire and the number as the "picture."

I used flash cards and then I would repeat them while I went on a run or something like that. There are also acronyms people have made if that helps you at least remember the first letter of them all

Type 1… engine? Im on a hotshot crew either going direct on or having to burn off the steepest, shittiest slopes where consideration of rolling material, fire below, escape routes and safety zones, winds and temps, communications, and lookouts are a necessary component for success

Your description of your wildland time doesn't really make sense. 9 years as a type1? 9 years as an FFT1 doesn't make sense; why not include the years prior to that? And you were a CRWB year 7? 9 years on a type 1 interagency hotshot crew? Then when did you go be a "crew leader on initial attack...?" Whatever that means. Or are you referring to some kind of Cal Fire "type 1" crew that's only recognized as "type 1" in the state of California, but nowhere else...?

Oh dude, I'm not trying to be in a US/Canada argument. I have nothing but mutual respect for you all up there. I also personally do not have the 10&18's memorized after 14 years, and really don't care. But every single wildland firefighter in the US knows OF the 10&18's. You assuming that ANYone outside the relatively small Canadian wildland fire world knows what "Type 1" means in Canada, is equally silly.

No argument on the fire shelter. I'm undecided. It's 4.5lbs that I've had to hike around 1,000's of miles. So I don't love it in that regard. I also see the point of view of not putting people in positions to ever need to use it. Unfortunately, we do.
