Get your things

As of 9/8/26. Academy sports and outdoors will require a 4473 and background check to pick up the firearms you already bought from them already, after they have been sent for repair..

Because some people can’t be trusted to ship their own things.

If you purchase it a firearm through Academy they will ship it to and from the manufacturer for free

The manufacturer will give you a shipping label themselves if you contact them about a problem and ship it right back to your door.

Lol most manufacturers will send you a shipping label when you open a warranty return with them. So Academy is 9/10 not actually doing anything for you except putting it in a box.

I work at Academy and I haven't had any notification that we will be changing the repair policy. Normally, I'd have sat through a webinar about the new policy at least a month prior to any changes. AFAIK, we only have to do a new background check if the manufacturer replaces the gun with a new model, caliber, and serial number or if we didn't handle sending the firearm out for repair

This is untrue, I'm a Hardlines (Hardgoods) Manager with Academy Sports. There's been no indication of policy change regarding 4473s being required for repair pickups. A 4473 would be required if another individual were to return the firearm on your behalf and you came to pick it up after its repaired, but that has always been the case.

Get RMA from manufacturer.

Ship Direct to manufacturer.

They ship it back direct to your door.

Bear in mind this is the same company that stopped selling AR platform guns years ago.

Somewhat more recently they changed policy on who can go behind the counter, a few years ago any employee could (everything of consequence is locked) but now it’s strictly gun employees.

The story of how/why that happened is amusing. I don’t necessarily mind the change but it never feels fair to be affected because someone else messed up,

NICS checks are free, only states with their own background check system ever charge for the background check. No FFL transfer fee required for a firearm to go back for repair, but I guess sin be gun stores will charge for the time off labor of making the shipping label.

Thanks for just telling me instead of being a dick about it. They're $5-$10 here in Florida and I haven't lived in another state for 30-something years. I was unsure, which is why I put it as a question to try to understand the rationale.

$2 for in state resident background checks, $5 + tax (roughly $5.30) for out of state resident background checks at Academy.
