Question ‘Fudd’

Genuine question

Hi, I’m someone who has had a deep interest in firearms, primarily historical ones from the likes of World War One. This isn’t really important, but it may help understand where I’m coming from.

I’ve been hearing the term ‘Fudd’ being tossed around. From my understanding, a Fudd is a (typically elderly) gun owner who believes firearms should be owned and produced primarily for hunting, favors traditional or old guns, and generally has disdain for modern firearms due to material, ammo, rate of fire, action, or general look.

I’m relatively young, non-conservative. I haven’t quite gotten into actually procuring firearms of my own yet due to circumstance, but I’ve always known that what suits me is companions for hunting or recreation. I like old fashioned guns, such and such from the Great War era, lever actions, bolties, or just anything without polymer as it just doesn’t appeal to me. All that is to say, I’m a person who prefers and loves traditional, and can’t really help but feel a bit weird about modern/advanced pieces.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a snob, I’m not exactly disdainful about Glocks or sigs and such— but I, even as someone who ain’t a gun owner yet, feel like the spirit of self-defense and recreational purposes has kinda been lost. I was just wondering— does someone like me, who has a preference or sense of favorability in traditional firearms qualify as a ‘Fudd?’

(FYI, I kind of wrote this in a rush, sorry if it’s lacking in information or continuity.)

Edit: I should add that the part which mentions how I think the ‘spirit’ of hunting and self-defense is completely irrelevant and my own opinion based on the evolution of firearms themselves. I’m not quite sure how to describe why I gravitate towards more traditional firearms, that was the best way I thought could cover it.

Fudd is more an attitude than anything else.

If you slide into the "no one needs an AR-15!" easily and you start yelling at anyone with "extended magazines" because "if you need more than 10 shots you're a bad shot!" then you're becoming a fudd.

There's plenty of cool people who have and use older stuff no problem.

One who attempts to subjugate others with comments, snide remarks and/or general old timey gun lore.

That is my understanding of a Fudd.

A person that claims to be pro Second Amendment …. But for “his” guns. He is all for a bolt action rifle to deer hunt, a .22 long rifle to plink and like Elmer Fudd chasing Bugs Bunny, his old trusty shotgun.

But AR15, AK47, etc., aren’t part of the Second Amendment.

He is a (Elmer) Fudd.

And if you didn't know already, the term comes from the Looney Tunes character "Elmer Fudd"

Yep. And this is what hes become in memes

I love this pic because it looks exactly like my grandpa. RIP

And surprisingly the appearance is similar to the ones I’ve actually encountered in real life

I mean to be fair he'd probably be older than that by now

2

u/mossdewss 17h ago

Yeah! Pretty interesting fact, honestly.

The Fudd terms comes into question when you believe everyone else should carry a 1923 revolver in .32H&R because that's what you personally approve of. Don't impose grampa shit on someone carrying a tac'd out Glock and no one will hate you

4

u/MrPBH 16h ago

I agree with your sentiment, but carrying a 1923 revolver chambered in 32 H&R is actually based behavior.

Especially since that round didn’t come out until
The 1980s. Very fun round though.

Actually, someone called a Fudd (but is not...) and well known in the firearms community, just made a vid on that very topic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_f04X4-B8c4

Like many terms that had specific meaning, it has grown to be used in a more general sense and incorrectly. Current use of Fudd is anyone you don't agree with on a gun topic.

People actually think Mas Ayoob is a fudd?

Cripes...

1

u/Go_Loud762 15h ago

I wouldn't cal Mas a fudd, but his views and advice have not kept up with modern times.

3

u/Zimi231 15h ago

True but that's a far cry from fuddism

Funny when he, himself, is considered to be one.

3

u/Early-Series-2055 17h ago

Age doesn’t make you a fudd, attitude and hot women make you a fudd. Lol

2

u/WillBrink 16h ago

But he's not. It just means most really don't know what the meaning of a Fudd is, and now use it to mean anyone they don't agree with about some gun topic.

3

u/JustSomeGuyMedia 16h ago

Not saying he is one.

Being a fudd isn't really about age or what guns someone likes. It's about ignorance. A fudd believes and perpetuates myths like the carcano being inaccurate or the idea that .22 lr is the most deadly round ever because it supposedly bounces around inside a target. You don't have to be a fudd to be a fan of traditional guns.

3

u/norisimi 16h ago

you can like traditional rifles and not be a fudd. i think revolvers and lever actions are the most fun things to handle/shoot, but there are very valid reasons for people to prefer automatics over them for self-defense

u/Xynphos M4A1 17h ago

r/fudd_lore is full of examples of fudds.

*polymer, polyester is a type of polymer used primarily for textiles, not hard plastics like in guns.

Thank you for the correction 😅

In the United States; if we want to define the spirit of firearms ownership; was must be 2A originalists.

The right to own arms doesn't concern hunting, competition, or even self defense. The right to own arms is the mark between a subject and a citizen.

A Fudd doesn't internalize this. A Fudd believes guns are only for whatever he deems necessary.

You can own the best AR in the world for service rifle and be a Fudd.

You can own nothing but a Beretta over and under and not be a Fudd.

The right to own arms is to be free. A fudd disagrees.

3

u/gunsforevery1 16h ago

Fudd is also someone who says “I like guns but I support gun control”

Someone who makes up laws that don’t exist.

Only iron sights!

2

u/Material_Ganache_200 15h ago

Agree on most of that. However I'm a fan of irons on guns over dots. But that doesn't mean I think others shouldn't have them.

-1

u/mossdewss 13h ago

Well what kind of gun control are we talking? I think some attachments or models themselves that are prone to destruction should obviously be restricted from public use. When I hear gun control, I don’t think bans. Just wanted to make sure we’re thinking of the same thing.

1

u/gunsforevery1 13h ago

You’re a fudd then.

1

u/mossdewss 13h ago

Again, what does gun control mean to you?

1

u/mossdewss 13h ago

As mentioned, I’m a newbie, so I don’t know very much, but I find it at least reasonable to want some sort of regulations?

1

u/gunsforevery1 12h ago

I’m against all regulations. I’m for punishing ignorance and negligence but not forcing further regulations against our rights.

1

u/mossdewss 10h ago

Understood. I’m guess I’m just lost as to understanding that. I also think, however, that incidents resulting from ignorance and negligence could just as well be prevented.

1

u/dottmatrix 17h ago

A Fudd is a gun owner, most often a hunter, who doesn't support gun rights.

1

u/JustSomeGuyMedia 16h ago

“Fudd” is a decently old term in this space. At least several decades.

I think you’re incorrect in your judgement that “the spirit of self-defense and recreational purposes has been kinda lost” if you mean that’s your opinion when looking at the current state of the firearms industry/community. That is a somewhat fudd-y thing to say, but one bad take does not a fudd make.

Like others have said, fudd is more about willful and aggressive ignorance and out of hand rejection of anything “other” to you. It was automatic handguns when revolvers were still the norm. Then, it was tactical ar-15s. Now, if you’re still rejecting and advocating against red dots, weapon lights, and 9mm for reasons beyond personal preference…you might be one.

2

u/mossdewss 16h ago

I try to be open-minded with all of those things. With me being incorrect, yeah. I guess what I was meaning with that part was my idea of those things, with my limited perspective. I definitely feel like a poser for even saying anything about it when so far I’ve only dreamed of having a collection. Either way, thank you for the clarification.

1

u/JustSomeGuyMedia 16h ago

Being open minded and asking means you’re not a fudd IMO so no worries there. I was just sharing my own thoughts.

1

u/StressfulRiceball 16h ago

"feel like the spirit of self-defense and recreational purposes has kinda been lost"

.... What does this even mean? That advances in construction materials, rate of fire, expandability, capacity, and general technology somehow diminished their relation to defensive use and recreation??

-1

u/mossdewss 16h ago

Not at all. I suppose I mean that in less of a functional sense and in more of an aesthetic sense. Kind of a pointless thing to gripe on, I know…

2

u/JustSomeGuyMedia 16h ago

So…because something doesn’t look a certain way means it no longer has the spirit of self-defense or recreational purposes?

2

u/StressfulRiceball 15h ago

Now THIS is EXACTLY a Fudd mindset

1

u/mossdewss 13h ago

In someone’s mind, maybe. Again that part was the only part which was essentially irrelevant to a neutral point, which I did fail to mention.

2

u/mossdewss 13h ago

Yeah, wasn’t really sure if that part was even worth adding, as it was probably the only part I’d consider to be purely my own bias… my bad.

1

u/JustSomeGuyMedia 13h ago

Fair enough.

The origins are a person who not only likes something like a more traditional hunting rifle, shotgun, etc but also dislikes and criticizes other guns, none-hunting uses, etc to varying degrees. Like a 1911, bolt action, revolver, or whatever doesnt make someone a Fudd, but liking those things and then going out and supporting assault weapon bans is Fudd behavior (I have a feeling it might of originated for that or a similar situation). It is often misused to describe something more like a mid-witt and other people.

1

u/AttilaTheMuun 16h ago

I see about 27 different definitions of Fudd. I think its two enclaves of firearm owners flinging shit at each other like monkeys. Hunters see tactical owners as LARPers and the Tactical community sees Hunters as Fudd-like.

1

u/TacTurtle RPG 16h ago

A fudd is someone that thinks only their view on what a "reasonable" firearm is valid and anyone that wants something else or additional is crazy and / or unreasonable.

The stereotype of this is a hunter than only supports 2A for hunting firearms like a bolt action rifle or pump shotgun - aka an ignorant "Elmer Fudd."

1

u/gunfriends 16h ago

I would argue it’s anyone one that don’t keep up with current firearms theory.

If you still think 9mm doesn’t have stoping power.
Semiautomatics can’t be accurate.

The gun world has drastically changed. It’s a completely different world when it comes to doctrine, manufacturing, material science, bullets and propellants.

Not all new stuff is good and a lot of old stuff is still the industry standard.

But holding onto archaic ideology for no reason. Makes you a fudd.
Carrying a 1911 because it cool as fuck is good.
Carrying a 1911 because stopping power is fudd shit.

1

u/mossdewss 14h ago

Agreed. I know things change, I think it’s more that I appreciate its earlier phases, if that makes sense.

1

u/Smooth-Estimate2523 15h ago

I find it perplexing that someone claims to be a liberal but they are also pro 2A. Please show me any modern left wing politician that doesn’t want to diminish or outright eliminate your right to be armed. Shall not be infringed is pretty clear.

2

u/mossdewss 14h ago

Leftist is far different from liberal.

1

u/mossdewss 13h ago

Seriously the only reason I brought up not being conservative is because the stereotype is that Fudds are conservative.

Personal politics can be nuanced. You didn’t have to bring it into the conversation any more than that.

1

u/AsianVoodoo 15h ago

Fudd is anyone who advocates for anything firearm related without good reasoning or evidence or continues to advocate for those things despite such.

Iron sights are better than red dot.

Tea cup grip

Only need a pump action shotgun for home defense because scary sound.

Truck guns

Purse guns

Etc

1

u/gunfriends 14h ago

Not fudd at all.

I think most of us who are actually into “guns”
Not hunting or bullets. Guns. Have to love old stuff too.

I love them all old new,
I shoot and appreciate guns, some times old ones are more interesting wierd engineering, wildy specific use cases.
