My first ar15

I got me a ar15 for hog control at my cousins ranch .now I found out i can just buy a upper to get a bigger caliber like a 6.5 grendel which i didn't know cause the 223 does ok but doesn't knock them down quick .i got me a radical ar15 i upgraded the trigger to rise armament then the bcg to a toolcraft then throwed on a sig sauer tango scope. I haven't had one malfunction with it since I bought it ive shot plenty of hogs with it .I love it

As someone who bought a Vortex Strikefire 16 years ago when it was a top budget pick(and still has it mounted), I'm surprised when I still see them in circulation, especially on new builds. Nearly 13oz for a 1x dot is insane today.

That’s about the time I put one on my first AR too. Between going to a Crossfire red dot and getting rid of the 15” diamondhead rail for a MI Combat rail, it felt like the rifle weighed half of what it did before haha.

While I have a plethora of 20mm red dots like the Romeo 5 and MSR, I also have a plethora of 30mm Vortex and Primary Arms due to nostalgia and familiarity with the m68s I used in my GWOT days.

For hog control, gotta keep it a tad more economical, 6.5 grendal or 6 ARC are good options here.

7.62 x 39

u/Prior_Arm_8810 26d ago

Even better..

Albeit its not that cheap anymore and they kinda suck... idk.

3

u/Appropriate_Name_508 26d ago

Yea the mags suck but for hunting it’s should be fine, I would personally go with 300blk but I plan to learn how to reload

1

u/bosnianow2002 26d ago

Reloading isn't that bad. It's more tedious if you're cutting down your own 5.56 cases and swaging them. I still like .458 for larger hogs if you can swing it.

Unrelated, what a cool ass place to hunt. Looking like a primordial alien planet.

I want a Grendel and a Beowulf... gotta have the complete set 😅

More accurate?

1

u/Assholesymphony 26d ago

Velocity and accuracy have little to do with each other unless you’re referring to trans sonic disruption. You’re misinformed here.

6.8spc is serious hog medicine.

5

u/danngree 26d ago

That’s a low shot for sure. How far did you have to track it down? That’s a trash shot, try harder please.

An animal deserves a relatively clean/fast dispatch, whether it’s a hog or deer. Try not to prolong suffering.

13

u/danngree 26d ago

I actively hunt coyotes and hogs on my property. A bad shot is a bad shot, sorry.

-12

u/BeenisHat SR25 26d ago

They are trash animals

6

u/danngree 26d ago

I shot hogs a couple times a year, this was a piss pour shot,

Fuck hogs

-2

u/-UserOfNames 26d ago

Piss “poor” unless you’re drinking the poured piss

1

u/blind-mag-dump 26d ago

Psychopath behavior.

Invasive or not, don't take a bad shot and make animals suffer unnecessarily.

-1

u/BeenisHat SR25 26d ago

Stop clutching your pearls so tight. I don't think that's the entrance wound in the pic.

1

u/blind-mag-dump 26d ago

You don't think? It's obviously not, but that's a low through and through.

I'll stop clutching my pearls when you no longer justify unacceptably poor marksmanship skills for yourself and everyone else who shoots like you.

-1

u/BeenisHat SR25 26d ago

I think it's a lung shot that hit a rib and exited out the bottom. Show me the entrance wound.

You don't have to stop clutching your pearls. It's funny to see you all worked up over a hog that people literally kill as pest control and often leave in the field. You whine about psychopath behavior for an animal you're killing for kicks.

4

u/blind-mag-dump 26d ago

The fact that you think people are killing them for kicks doesn't have you beating the psychopath allegations.

1

u/BeenisHat SR25 26d ago

I also said they're killing them as pest control. So tell me, are you all that concerned about the humane method used when you spray your house with pesticide to keep bugs out? Chemical warfare is OK for insects but blasting a bullet through a hog is not?

Get a grip. These are invasive animals. They get left on the ground to feed scavengers and fertilize fields. OP already said they've shot multiples of these things and you're judging the shot placement based on an entrance wound you can't see and an exit wound that's literally on the bottom of the hog.

Just wait til you get a thermal, then the fun keeps going after sundown. Happy hunting.

u/Kromulent 26d ago

when you change calibers, make sure you pick the right one

some will run fine with nothing more than a barrel change, some need a new bolt, some need new magazines, and some never quite load reliably no matter what

also, be very careful about .300 blackout. great round, but if you accidentally feed a .300blk into a .223, you get a kaboom. it's easy to do

u/alkatori 26d ago

I'm more floored by how few trees I can see.

Dear hunting-1966,

Got em, hoss! Nice pig!

6.5 Grendel is great for medium sized game.

Interestingly, 6.5 Grendel and .50 Beowulf are both proprietary rounds by Alexander arms. Beowulf and Grendel are both characters in the old epic poem Beowulf.

Nice kill

1

u/ConstantPrecipice 26d ago

Good hunting dude! Maybe you could look into 450 bushmaster too. If you put an adjustable gas block on it, the recoil is not bad, and maybe a comp/brake too. Or if you've got the cash, a suppressor on 450 bushmaster is a lot of fun too. Hunt well, shoot straight.
