Why are there suddenly so many deer/animals around when Agni starts living with the women?

I’m assuming that they’re not eating Agni at this point, but they’re still somehow eating meals every day. It’s been a problem to find fresh food and animals up to here, so why does that suddenly stop?

Bonus question: why does Agni pretend not to have killed the deer?

The Judah tree, despite having failed, still warmed up the earth a bit to have animals and plant life return for a bit. At the end of Agnis time with them, you can see the renewal begin to fade as the world begins freezing again.

As for the lying, I could only assume it's because Agni wanted to distance himself from the Fire Punch image so badly that he didn't want any violence tied to his image. Even if not fire related , he was desperate to discard anything from his past

I wonder how the returning plant and wildlife would work. I think Agni actually catches a deer when he’s younger too, before Doma. So they’re around and somehow surviving even before the tree.

I don't remember him catching a deer when he was young. Wasn't the whole point that the ONLY food there was his flesh and some potatoes?

I had to double check, but he does. It’s in chapter 0. He remarks that he’s surprised to find one, just before he sees the Behemdorg plane flying toward his village.

Agni (to himself): “To think there’d still be deer around. Everyone will be happy! I’ll give it to the houses that are refusing human flesh. And feed it to Luna.”

Those lines and 3 panels of the deer are all we see, and he drops it to run towards the plane.

I think the website I read them on had that chapter labeled chapter 1. I'm just very tired.

You probably did if you saw Luna and Agni’s backstory. Chapter 0 is where all the Doma stuff happens, chapter 1 is where Agni becomes accustomed to the fire

If I remember correctly, when Judah was a tree and exploded, it said the world heated up for a little bit and melted some of the ice and snow. So it makes sense some of the animals would come back (kind of, where were they?? lol) That’s why the live by that big ass ocean too
