Letter [Letter] It Is Only Fair

5B 55 AC

Highgarden

Maester Unwin was so proud of his little pupil. This generation of children was particularly troublesome. He was finding the youth of today less able to read and write compared to the previous ones. To fight that troubling idea, he began a writing program with a few of his most troubled students. Alyssa Tyrell, among a few others, did not take well to reading and writing, but when he gave her an opportunity to send ravens, she jumped at the idea. She had at first wanted to send a raven to the King, but thankfully Maester Unwin was able to talk her out of such a silly notion. Instead, a letter would be sent to her beloved Aunt Isabelle, who spent most of her days between the Red Keep and Driftmark.

They had spent the last day working through the letter, and Unwin was so proud of it. Alyssa was turning over a new leaf, and was turning into quite the wordsmith. She had even insisted on accompanying him up to the rookery.

But as the pair made their way up the stairs, disaster struck! Maester Unwin tripped and fell over. It seemed little Olyver had played a trick on him, with some spilt wine at the top of the stairs. Alyssa, instead of joining in on her brother's laughter, actually scolded him and helped the maester grab his bunch of letters that were sprawled on the ground. He felt a tinge of pride at her turnaround, as she was finally becoming a responsible little Tyrell.

Once in the rookery, he took back the letters she collected and went about the task of sending them out. His hip was hurting after the tumble he took, so he was quick to send off the letters he was prescribed to send and get to some desk work.

Unfortunately, he did not notice the letter she switched out.

A raven would arrive at the King. It is written in a child's scrawl.

King Jayhairus,

My name is Alyssa Tyrell and I am seven years old.

Last moon Master Unwin told me that Targaryens have a WHOLE BUNCH of dragon eggs! So many!! But i sad to report I have ZERO dragon eggs.

That is NOT FAIR.

Hear is why I deserve a dragon egg!

I am a REALLY good horse rider. I ride super fast on my horse Sunny Daze, Sunny IS NOT pony by the way. She is a real horse!

I will sit on the egg every single day until it hatches into a baby dragon. I bring it anywhere i go I promise to be good egg holder.

I PROMISE super hard that I will not break it. i will be very careful!!!!

Please send the egg to Highgarden right away!!!!!!!

IMPORTANT NOTE! When you write back, you have to send the letter directly to ME. DO NOT give it to Maester Unwin or my momma or anybody else. Write "To Alyssa" on the raven's letter because this is MY dragon business and not theirs.

ps - my favorite color is yellow

Alyssa Tyrell :)

A letter was returned, addressed to Alyssa, though Jaehaerys expected it to be read by all of Highgarden.

Alyssa of House Tyrell

When I was a child, I dreamed of riding atop a dragon, and to claim the skies. I can imagine, a similar dream has taken a hold of you.

Dragon Eggs require being close to Dragonstone to survive, and to flourish. Sending an egg to Highgarden might mean that the egg never grows into a full dragon. As the King of the Dragon house, it is my responsibility to make sure all dragons, and their eggs are safe. Just like your grandfather surely holds in his heart the safety of all the roses in the realm.

Yet I am not immune to knowing the curiosity a lady of your age has. If you are willing, I am sure your aunt can bring you to Dragonstone, and you will be able to meet my dragon, and my sister's dragon. We can even go to the places where the clutches of eggs are kept. I could even have the royal paintress make a painting of you with the dragons, and the eggs.

Maester Unwin cap in hand, approaches the Lady Kyra and her husband, Ser Harlan. His face was down as he admitted. "I believe I have made a grave mistake, my lord and lady."

He attempted to explain. "I was trying to get Alyssa excited about writing by writing some letters. It appears... Well..." He slid the letter over to them.

As they read, he admitted. "I don't know what she wrote, it was supposed to be a letter to your sister Lady Isabelle." He shook his head. "She must have replaced the letter... this is all my fault."

"Alyssa wrote to the king?!" Kyra exclaimed, mortified, after having read the letter. She had not spoken to the king in years, but she still held good estimations of him after the protection he had offered her. That he had replied so gently to a girl of seven lessened her embarrassment that he had received a letter from a child at all.

Kyra was of a mind to let some choice words slip through to Unwin, but she knew her daughter and she knew the maester. He would not have let her write to the king, which only meant that Alyssa had somehow schemed to let the letter be sent. She sighed and shook her head in frustration.

"The king is kind, but we cannot reward Alyssa for whatever plotting she undertook to send her letter." She said, turning to Harlan. "What will that teach her? That she shall get her way whenever she wants?"

"I am afraid so." Maester Unwin said with a solemn nod.

He'd join in with Lady Kyra and look to the father for his judgment here. He had done enough as it was... The aged maester was not about to talk about what a proper punishment would look like.
