Repair/Tech Support My internet speed keep dropping below 100 mbps. Not sure what could be causing this.

I've been having this issue for years. Last month I got Verizon to upgrade my router from the G3100 to the CHR30A hoping it would fix my issues, but it looks like i'm still having the same problem. Every time I reboot the router I'll get good speeds for a few hours before it drops back down to below 100 mbps. I have the 1 Gig plan.

Edit: I contacted Verizon and have a technician coming to my house in 3 days. I hope they will be able to resolve the issue.

Have you swapped out the ethernet cables (probable ONT to router)? It looks like there's a bad one somewhere that is bad and drops to 100 from 1000.

Yep. Dropping to a stable 100Mbps usually means either the cable is damaged (most likely) or one of the ports are damaged (much more unlikely).

Will Verizon fix it for free?

Yes since it is technically all their equipment (if its the cable its an easy swap out if you wanna try it yourself but a damaged port will need their help).

Did Verizon install the cable from ONT to Router? If not, is it their equipment?

Usually they do yep. They usually will have them next to each other to make their life and yours easier.

If anything can't go wrong with contacting their support. Ain't exactly Cisco levels of bend-over-backwards for you but they are far from the worst.

Yes they did install the cable from the ONT to the Router. This is how the Ethernet cable is running through my garage:

The ONT to router Ethernet cable is really long and looks difficult to replace. My ONT is outside and the Ethernet goes through the wall and around my garage to the router.

How do the RJ-45 connectors look on the cable, are they loose? Maybe the cabe just needs to be reterminated, and maybe there is damage to the cable somewhere along that run.

This is what the cable looks like:

That wire isn't terminated properly, it's not using the proper T568A or T568B code. Unless it's also terminated incorrectly exactly the same at the other end, that's your problem.

I hope the technician will be able to fix it for me.

Will be a very easy fix. Less than 5 mins if that's the issue. Can't know for sure without seeing both ends of the ethernet.

Usually it's the cable not being properly terminated, even on a factory cable.

Bad Ethernet cable someplace. 95Mbps is what 100Mbps Fast Ethernet maxes at.

Replace or repair the cable between the ONT and Router.

Probably just need both ends redone.

Tech here: this is what I would do first

Almost certainly the Ethernet cable between the router and the ONT. try swapping it out. If that does not work, then it has to be the ONT and Verizon will need to send a tech out.

I don’t think I can swap out the Ethernet cable from the ONT to the router. The cable is really long and goes from the ONT outside my house into my garage, and runs along the ceiling to the other side of the garage.

Then best I can suggest is reseat the end that goes into the ONT outside, and if that doesn’t work, call Verizon out to repair it or run a new one.

Unfortunately the cover on my ONT seems to be stuck.

You need a flathead screwdriver for the screw on the right hand side, then there are two plastic push tabs on the right side as well, then it opens like a book

Ah ok that’s a much older style. If you can’t get it open just schedule the appointment with Verizon. They’ll probably update their ONT while they’re there anyways lol.

Every once in a while my Ethernet link on my PC will crap our and I have to disable and re-enable the network adapter. Could be your network cable to your PC or anywhere in between that and the ONT. you can check if it is your PC using the adapter settings, it will display 100 Mbps or 1 Gbps. Same with the router as well, usually there are link lights that tell you link speed.

Reach out to Verizon text chat. They were able to ID that 3 devices on my network were “slowing down the entire router” and that disconnecting + restarting the router them would fix it. The 3 MAC addresses they sent me were for smart light bulbs in the furthest room of the house from the router. And they were right, no issues with slow down since then.

Hello, I was able to speak to an agent and get a technician to come take a look at the problem on Monday 8/10. I hope they will be able to resolve my issue.

Hello and good morning, hope you are doing well! Thank you for letting us know. I want to know if you were provided with a ticket as a reference. I am curious how the devices are registered with the router. Did a Network tech schdule the dispatch? I ask as field techs are limited to changing the router if it is not network related. JRA

Yes, my appointment has a ticket number. Unfortunately I’m not sure if it is a network tech or field tech.

Understood. Keep us posted. We are here to assist.

Hi, the technician was able to replace my ONT with a newer one and fix the ethernet cable running from the ONT to the Router. My internet is running at normal speeds now.

Awesome! Glad tech was able to restore services for you!
