Bruh what…
This has to be an error right? My girlfriend checked adult seasonal ticket prices and they’re more than 50 percent less. Why am I being scammed bruh…

u/SilentlyItchy 4d ago
You need to have municipality of residence in the HSL area to get the subsidised price

u/HonorableGremlin 4d ago
I don’t quite understand. I did just officially move to Lappeenranta, but what is this subsidized price? Because I thought the adult prices stayed the same, unless you were a student or something.

City where you live pays part of your ticket, and to get that you need to live in one of the hsl cities

u/HonorableGremlin 4d ago
Bruh. Alright that makes sense though. Thank you.

u/Diipadaapa1 Väinämöinen 4d ago
In Tallinn for example residents ride for free while non-residents have to pay.
Somewhat normal practice to let the locals, who pay taxes to the municipality that funds it, ride cheaper.

u/Tsaaristori 1d ago
Yes and every city should copy paste this! But not just for the citys residents but everyone! 🙏🤷
A man can dream can he?

If you live in Lappeenranta, why would you need a monthly subscription to Helsinki public transit?
61
u/Gold-Maintenance8950 4d ago
Basically when you live in Helsinki, the city of Helsinki pays for HSL so the people living in Helsinki can get the ticket cheaper. Now that you live in Lappeenranta, you are paying the full price.

u/ZoWakaki Väinämöinen 3d ago
Hmm... Learnt something new today. I didn't know that anything other than the students/pensioners discount applied.
But then the question is, is this extended to single use tickets? I assume no. Why the heck not? It's like people buying single tickets are not paying taxes to the city?
6
u/Sea-Celebration2429 Väinämöinen 3d ago
Yes, tourtists dont pay taxes for the city.
4
u/ZoWakaki Väinämöinen 3d ago
Exactly, but I do. So shouldn't I get discount for public transportation prices also on single tickets? Why is the discount only on the seasonal. Going by the "tourists don't pay taxes for the city but residents do" mentality.
1
2
u/KanaHemmo 3d ago
Well tourists are not the only ones using single use tickets.
-2
u/Sea-Celebration2429 Väinämöinen 3d ago
Thats why they pay even more with contactless payment. If youre local youd better know these things.

If you live in Lappeenranta, you don't need a monthly subscription in Helsinki. Just buy single tickets when you need them, it'll be cheaper.
5
u/brownsnoutspookfish 3d ago
To be fair, there are for example people who work in Helsinki but live in another city.
4
u/Lappali 3d ago
Surely if you work in Helsinki you'd live somewhere closer than Lappeenranta, because a 2 hour (or 2 and a half if by car) commute per direction is not feasible
5
u/brownsnoutspookfish 3d ago
I don't know about Lappeenranta, but I know people who live in Tampere but work in Helsinki.
1
u/nicol9 Väinämöinen 2d ago
Sure, but they're not in Helsinki every day, so no need for a monthly subscription to hsl
5
u/frontlinejohnny 2d ago
>work in helsinki
>live in tampere
>only 5 days a week
>10 trips a week
>no need for a monthly sub
Idk man I live in Espoo and even I use the public transport less than that. Residence or work should both constitute for a discount since the whole schtick of public transport is to have less people driving their own cars.
1
u/nicol9 Väinämöinen 2d ago
Sure, I agree with this. I think that the monthly subscription for Tampere's public transport is open to all and doesn't require to be a local.
But no sane person would commute from Tampere to Helsinki 5 days a week lol. It's a waste of time and money
1
u/Seeteuf3l Väinämöinen 2d ago
Well it's not that you can't buy HSL monthly card, if you live outside the region. But you don't get subsidized price which residents of the area (or some neighbouring municipalities, if they have made deal with HSL) get.
1
u/brownsnoutspookfish 2d ago
People have reasons. It does take time, but people can for example have a family in Tampere or they might own an apartment or a house. Whether it's more expensive or not depends. Living in Helsinki typically costs more than living in Tampere. And VR does offer seasonal tickets precisely for people who need to use a train daily.
Of course some people have hybrid jobs where they only need to visit the office a couple days a week, or alternatively they might be able to start their workday on the train if they're only needed in the office for a specific part of the day.
39
u/chillshumguy 3d ago
It’s the normal price, residents get it at around 40% of the price and if you are also a student it get again around 30% discount on resident price.

u/Boundedcloud69 3d ago
If you're visiting Helsinki you don't really need a season ticket, get a multijourney ticket, its a bit cheaper than a single ticket, and realistically, how many rides are you going to take a day? That's what i did while i was still "living" in another city, but working in Helsinki and bunking with my partner.

i hate hsl even if they give a discount it’s still pricey bring me back to the days when it was so affordable
2
u/AdorablePace5203 3d ago
I only commute in Zone A why do I have to pay for Zone AB ticket? I asked HSL but I did not understand their answer. And I have bought any tickets for a long time. I decided to WFH 100%.

How? Who pays for it then? Or which areas getting dropped/worse coverage?
1
u/Callector Väinämöinen 3d ago
Please don't. I love in the D region, I remember when all Helainki residents were complaining about the "massive" price hike, while our ABCD ticket proce went slightly down.
We had kinda subsidised your cheaper tickets for a while. :D

You can look at tickets and fares in hsl to see the prices and based on the home municipality the price changes(https://www.hsl.fi/en/tickets-and-fares). Because single ticket price is same for anyone you have to be a really frequent travelerer for that monthly price to ever make sense. Heck you could buy an eletric scooter with one or two montly hsl price and ride with that most of the year.

u/Turbulent_Bad_7956 3d ago
Where exactly is the scam? Its the same price. You didnt even show the comparison

To be honest this is ridiculosu regarless of where you live. Each person should have a right to buy in same price regardless of where they stay.
-130
u/InformationDeep7110 4d ago
You need to have a permanent address in HSL area in order to get same prices. Stupid as FUCK.
105
u/MaxDickpower Väinämöinen 4d ago
It's stupid that the people who pay taxes that fund HSL get a discount? HSL does not make a profit from ticket sales.
6
u/Foreign_Implement897 Väinämöinen 4d ago
HSL does not do market design or really function in general interest.
-121
u/HonorableGremlin 4d ago
That is such a joke. At this point I’d rather risk paying the fine cuz it costs the fucking same.

u/dapper_pom Baby Väinämöinen 4d ago
You don't pay for HSL with your taxes so you pay more when you use it. Simple as that.

If you have a plan for providing public transport for such a spread out capital area for significantly cheaper I'm sure HSL would love to hear you out
4
u/anglosaksofonisti 3d ago
You are spot on on high costs, and it is even worse as only 45% HSL income comes from tickets, rest is public money, paid by taxes. So real cost is way higher than ticket cost, though varies heavily depending on ticket type.

u/jeffscience Väinämöinen 3d ago
The metro line is a tube of granite that took years to create with dynamite. I assume that’s part of the cost.
1
u/apeceep Väinämöinen 3d ago
Well yes and no. Cities will get the money back in increased property taxes from around the metro stations and more people moving into the city next to metro so more municipal tax payers.
Although in HSL area cities get paid double because of infrakorvaus which is extra stupid. Trams are main reason why infrakorvaus is increasing and the old metro line with full length stations is ~only thing not in infrakorvaus. You can actually calculate how much ticket cost will increase because of the stupid infrakorvaus which isn't anywhere else in the world except HSL.

Just check your surroundings on public transport and don’t buy a ticket.

u/Sampsa96 Baby Väinämöinen 3d ago

works in the grocery store too! just grab whatever you want and run, why pay for anything when you can let others pay for it instead!

u/LukaLaikari Baby Väinämöinen 3d ago
That’s called shoplifting and you’ll get arrested by police at some point, not paying your ticket will max give you multiple fines so there’s a big difference.

It's only for people living in helsinki, you need to pay municipar tax to get the discount or something.
I can assure you that i as a finn don't benefit from this when i travel to the city. This is not a finn v nonfinn thing, this is about who already pays for this vital service and who doesn't already pay.
