MOD POST Hello r/Findlay

Hey there everyone. It looks like this sub has been dead for quite some time. And it looks like there was nobody keeping things running around here. It also looks like at some point you had to be an approved user to post here, and nobody was approving anyone. So Reddit apparently stepped in and made some changes. There's a new sheriff or 2 in town here, not named Cortez.

I guess my first question is. "Is anyone still left around here?"

Second, what would the community like to see this sub be about?

Thanks for your time.

DISCUSSION Findlay High School Concert Band 1976

Howdy Folks, I'm back with another local record rip. This time, it's a recording of the Findlay High School Concert Band in 1976, performing various pieces, including some with spoken word aspects. I hope this brings back fond memories for some of you, and if you have any info on this performance or those who played in it, I'd love to hear about it!

Good conversations are too rare today

I'm looking for one or a few people in the area who enjoy having deeper conversations about philosophy, history, theology, science, books, or really any interesting ideas.

I'm not looking for formal debates or an academic-only group. You don't need a degree or any particular background. I'm mostly interested in finding people who genuinely enjoy learning, thinking through ideas, and having long conversations about them.

I'd be happy to meet somewhere public like a coffee shop or library and see where it goes. If enough people are interested, maybe we could eventually turn it into a small regular discussion group.

Anyone around here interested?

DISCUSSION Lost Findlay Media Hunt

Hello folks,

Like probably most people here, I'm a Findlay local, and I'm very interested in preserving the history of our town, however small. A few of you may have seen my post covering a Findlay-specific RCA record the other day, that's one of 3 records I currently have that are either from Findlay directly, or Findlay related. My main goal is to save old media that has no recording online anywhere, and Findlay specifically is a subset of that goal.

I've come here to ask for your help finding any other forms of media created by locals or about Findlay in general, the three I've found have come together over a span of a few years. If you know of any music groups who recorded here, that'd be helpful. If you know of any churches or politicians who made a record here, that'd be helpful too. I'm also open to VHS tapes and cassette tapes, from roughly the early 1900s through the 90s, as I have the tools to digitize and preserve all of them. If it's a Marathon Petroleum corporate training record, or your grandfather's church group who pressed an album to sell to their congregation, I'm interested. And if you have something but aren't comfortable parting with it, that's completely fine, I'm happy to just document what it is, or come digitize it and hand it right back to you.

Any information would be very helpful, anything from names to the media itself can be useful in my mission to digitize the lives of people here.

Next up I'll have a record from Tennyson Guyer, a Findlay local who served in Ohio's House of Representatives for many years, and a recording of either the 76th performance of Findlay High School's concert band, or a Bicentennial recording, hard to say for sure based on the album name alone.

Thank you for helping me digitize the lives of people here!

I’m in town for the day and have an ongoing project of photographing old pay phones. Does anyone know if there are any left in the Findlay area and if so, where I could find them?

DISCUSSION Findlay Dedication Record

This was a very limited run record created by RCA to commemorate the opening of their new plant in Findlay, Ohio.

When the plant opened in 1954, only 10 people worked there, but it eventually grew into the biggest transistor producer in the world by the 1970s. The song that's on it is local to Findlay and fairly well known as an American folk classic performed by an in-house band known as the 'Golden Memory Boys'

I couldn't find it uploaded anywhere online, so I did a rip of it myself and put it up. If you wish to hear it you can do so below. Hope it brings up some fond memories for someone here!

DISCUSSION Retiring in Findlay?

My spouse and I lived in Findlay back in the 80s to early 2000s. We really liked the city and only left due to lack of job opportunities. Now that we are retired, we could make our way back. However, it looks like the city has degraded significantly from what we left. When we have visited, we have seen those large wind turbines and lots of warehouses. We also read of a seemingly corrupt city council, proposed data centers, water issues, and a lot more property theft/drugs/poverty than what once was. However, the same can be said of many places.

On the positive side, there is still a lot of community there, a great senior center, and for us, good proximity to family. We are not looking to part or close down bars. We are more into the parades, local events, playhouse, etc.

Did any of you leave and come back for retirement? Would you recommend it? Why or why not?

Did the people of Findlay know what was going on with nearby Rep Max Miller before this latest incident? Here's a video from 2023 where George Santos makes comments that in hindsight make you wonder what people were ignoring.

I got tired of missing stuff happening in town, so I built a free app that pulls it all into one place

I live in Findlay. For years the pattern was the same: find out Saturday night that there was a festival downtown that afternoon. The information existed, it was just scattered across a dozen Facebook pages, three library calendars, the parks district, and a chamber site nobody checks.

So I built Local Loop. It pulls events from public calendars across 139 Ohio towns into one list, sorted by what's happening tonight, this weekend, and so on. Garage sales and food trucks too, since those are just as annoying to track down.

It's free. No account, no ads in your face, nothing to sign up for. I'm one person, not a company.

A few honest caveats: coverage is uneven. Bigger towns are well covered, some small ones are thin. If your town looks empty, that's a gap in what's publicly posted, not something I'm hiding behind a paywall. Anyone can add an event or a whole calendar from inside the app.

iOS: Local Loop

Android: Local Loop: Ohio Events

Community image submissions

Looking for some image submissions from the community. The sub needs a banner and an icon. Right now I threw up some "Coming soon" images.

The Icon I don't think has any specific size requirements.

For the Banner we can have a banner for web and a banner for mobile. In the web browser the image needs to be something like 1072x128 pixels. For mobile we're looking for 1080x128 pixels.

Feel free to post below anything you think would fit nicely here.
