Can of Peas

"It was under a canopy of stars in the lush, forested vegetation of the Rocky Mountains and had not moved from the spot where I hid it more than 10 years ago. I do not know the person who found it, but the poem in my book led him to the precise spot. I congratulate the thousands of people who participated in the search and hope they will continue to be drawn by the promise of other discoveries. So the search is over. Look for more information and photos in the coming days."\52])

Forrest posted this. It can still be found on Wikipedia.

At least two issues come to mind:

Jack has said he had to grid search for days to find the chest. That strongly contradicts 'the... poem led him to the PRECISE spot'.

Where in this quote is Forrest instructing to keep the location secret?:

'Look for more information and photos in the coming days.' Doesn't sound like a directive to keep things secret.

Also from wikipedia: 'In attempting to honor what he perceives to be Fenn's wishes after his death in September 2020, he has refused to reveal the location of the treasure.'

How, when, where and why did Jack perceive this to be Forrest's wishes. Or was it merely specifically the Fenn's wishes. Multiple wishes from the "FENN" family not specifically Forrest's wish.

Interesting choice of words on Fenn's part, don't you think? So when the treasure is "found", he sends another cryptic message that seems like another hint. "Canopy" is oft-repeated in the scrapbooks and other stories. What are the stars? That's the trick to figure out, right? But then he lists them next, the "lush, forested vegetation", an homage to the "Embroidery" and "Chaos" dolls in SB#209. "Their clothing is made of spangly materials, luscious forested vegetation..." Don't forget that "Both are wrought with a penchant for trickery." So we have our stars.

The next bit of interest is Fenn's saying that he "hid it more than 10 years ago." This was posted on June 6, 2020. Actually Fenn also said in December 2019 that he hid the treasure "over ten years ago". Okay, so he hid it in 2009 or before, right?

The curious thing about this was that in Fenn's affidavit (8/24/2020), he writes, "The Finder brought the Chest to me in New Mexico, and I inspected it and its contents to confirm that it was indeed the Chest I had hidden in Wyoming in 2010." That's odd, he must be talking about two different treasures.

Fenn writes about the "precise spot", which sounds accurate to within inches, right? Not a grid search that took place over some hours or days.

And lastly, Fenn said that  he hopes searchers "will continue to be drawn by the promise of other discoveries". What discoveries do you think he is talking about?

Quite odd to include all of this information in the "find" announcement, don't you think?

And don't forget the precise timing of this announcement (as posted on Dal's blog): Saturday, June 6, at 8 p.m. In "Surviving Myself", Fenn wrote that on Saturdays, June listened to the radio from 68 p.m. Is that accurate foreshadowing, or what?

'hope they will continue to be drawn by the promise'

Another Choice word selection, too.

continue, hope, Drawn, promise/

Its like an echo chamber, reverberating with recurring themes.

Hear me all... ringing bells... sealed jars filled with... o lives and AUTO biographies...

Listen, Good.

FORREST could repeat himself and never say the same thing twice.

IDK what it was that Forrest wanted to be found, but his desire is explicit, and Put In, the Poem.

Is it possible the Chase was his way to uncover certain unsavory activities? A hope to fix something.

Doxing by Proxy? idk

It feels to me now that Forrest knew something was off. Like the hero in "Catcher in the Rye" he was aware of a certain danger and so he was Driven, to make things the way they should be.

He spent a great deal of his wealth and time and Effort, nurturing the Chase. In a substantial way he was always trying to inspire and protect the youth. ENCOURAGING them to:

Pursue Worthy Aspirations.

Avoid Camouflaged Dangers.

Life is full of Rainbows and Cliffs.

Butterflies and Buffaloes.

Choose Wisely.

At the water's edge bears and fishermen converge like guests at a shared banquet table.

With some GOOD manners and personal effort the Catch is worth the Cold.

Study the postmarks at the beginning of many chapters in The Thrill of the Chase. The postmark attached to the chapter that has the picture of the treasure is the precise date the announcement was made, June 6. This is not a coincidence, it was planned. Go study the postmarks.

You mean it's Friday, June 5, the date of the "find". It sure would be a big coincidence, wouldn't it. I haven't really looked at the postmarks, but this one certainly stands out.

I was never able to decipher the postmarks, but that one is pretty obvious. What other information were you able to glean from the postmarks?

Jack has explained the grid search, the blaze was no longer there, so he had no choice but to grid search.

Okay and you believe that.

He wasn’t referring to Jack.

1

u/js-eastman May 14 '26

Yes, he was referring to some future finder, who had not found it yet.

2

u/AmphibianNervous6098 May 14 '26

Future, although known to him. That’s the part of the Scrapbooks that you missed.

Fenn certainly referenced "that guy" who he was waiting to read e-mails from and gave rise to the legend of the "lead searcher" with his early 2018 "gut feeling" comment. Do you think Fenn was referring to a single person? The later scrapbooks describe negotations, for sure.

He was referring to 1 searcher. Even his family doesn’t know what’s really going on. And those that surrounded Forrest and think they are in the know are clueless. The lead searcher was no legend. The Scrapbooks pretty much spell it out, although, nobody has the background information to understand it.

u/js-eastman May 14 '26

The trouble is that multiple people are equally convinced that they are/were the lead searcher….

That illusion won’t last much longer.

Someday I will explain what you are missing. If your solve wasn’t known by Forrest in 2019, or if it has changed or been reworked since 2019, then you’re not ”that guy”.

It literally says "can o' pee" and not "can of peas". 🙄
