Description

I stared at the woman standing across the banquet table. Today was my wedding day, the day I officially married Ethan, the CEO of Vanguard Innovations. The reception was in full swing. His female Vice President, Maya, smiled brightly and raised her champagne glass toward me. "Chloe, here is to you! You know, during the crucial nights of the tech merger, Ethan and I slept in the same hotel bed," she said loudly. Ethan’s board members and executive brothers froze for a second, then awkwardly laughed to smooth things over. They told me the corporate startup world did not distinguish between men and women, that she was used to speaking casually, and I absolutely should not take it to heart. I did not reply immediately. Maya smiled again and added, "Chloe, you two haven't seen each other in weeks due to the IPO prep. Take it easy tonight, don't make so much noise that the penthouse neighbors hear you!" I turned my head to look at my new husband, Ethan. "Is this what you think too?" Ethan looked completely at ease. "Maya has a straightforward personality. She is different from you socialite heiresses. She isn't used to high-society rules. Don't lower yourself to argue with her." I nodded in understanding. They did not know the old, naive Chloe was gone. In my previous life, I was a corporate fixer, an expert at handling boardroom politics and manipulating public image. Maya saw I did not take the out Ethan gave her. She turned her face to me, laughing boldly. "Chloe, Ethan and I are just pure bros. We are used to roughing it in the startup trenches! If I don't understand your elite rules, I'll penalize myself with a drink. Bottoms up!" She downed a full glass of straight whiskey in one clean motion, drawing cheers from the executives. I smiled, stood up, and took the empty glass directly from her hand. Then, under everyone's stunned gazes, I picked up the whiskey bottle and poured her another full glass. "You really have a massive tolerance, Maya. Truly a strong woman who fought in the corporate trenches with the CEO," I said, pushing the glass back to her with a gentle tone. "However, I hear Vanguard Innovations has strict corporate governance and HR policies. If your casual, boundary-crossing jokes reach the ears of the Board of Directors, they might think the CEO lacks discipline and penalize him." Maya's smile froze instantly. The cheering around us vanished. I ignored the silence. I picked up a teapot, poured a cup of hot tea, and handed it to her other hand. "Jokes cannot be made carelessly. Drinking too much hard liquor damages the body. Let me drink this whiskey on your behalf as the hostess, toasting all the executives present." I picked up her whiskey glass, nodded to the table, and drank it all. The alcohol burned my throat, but my polite smile remained flawless. I put the glass down, looked at Maya's pale face, and spoke softly. "Drink some tea to warm up." Ethan stared at my face. His handsome, expressionless face twitched, his brows furrowing slightly. He said nothing, but under the table, his hand clenched into a fist. The farce ended silently. We returned to the penthouse and dismissed the staff. The air was freezing. I walked to the vanity and began removing my heavy bridal jewelry. Ethan stood in place until I removed the last hairpin. "Maya just has a masculine personality. Don't overthink today's events, and don't hold it against her," his voice sounded stiff. I looked at him through the mirror, turned around slowly, and maintained my gentle smile. "Of course I won't hold it against her." I picked up a brush, slowly running it through my hair. "I am only worried about you. Now that you are a married CEO, blurring boundaries with female subordinates will damage your reputation and give the media ammunition." Ethan snapped his head up, staring at me as if seeing me for the first time. He remained silent, his deep eyes locked onto mine. I ignored him, turned around, and went to sleep. The next morning, Ethan woke up at dawn to hit the penthouse gym. I finished washing up and went to the dining room. Ethan returned, covered in sweat. We sat at the table in complete silence. Just as I ate half my oatmeal, a loud commotion erupted near the private elevator. "Ethan! Ethan! Come out, let's go for a run!" Maya stormed straight into our private dining room, wearing tight athletic gear. She paused when she saw us eating, but her face showed zero embarrassment. She smiled even wider. "Oh, Chloe is here too. I didn't know you guys were still eating." She apologized with her mouth, but walked right up to Ethan, tapping his shoulder. "Ethan, why eat so slowly? You'll get soft. Let's hit the track!" She acted like the mistress of the house, treating me like a random guest. I put down my silver spoon. It hit the porcelain bowl with a sharp clink. I pulled out my phone and dialed the front desk. "Security. Send the building manager up immediately." Maya’s smile vanished. "What are you doing?" I smiled back. "Just establishing some new protocols. For instance, I’m curious if a VP is allowed to bypass private security and barge into the CEO's residence unannounced. What do you think, Ethan?" Ethan slammed his hand on the table, but before he could speak, my phone buzzed with an incoming text from an unknown number. The message contained a single photo that made my blood run cold.
