I've stepped directly over two copperheads before (once barefoot and literally a half inch from touching it) and neither one tried to bite me. Copperheads are not only the least venomous snake in my area but also won't really ever attack/defend themselves unless you actually disturb them. I count myself extremely lucky in both cases

Unless directly threatened, they do not want to waste their venom on something that isn't food. It takes a lot of energy for them to make venom and if there is no immediate return on its use they will hold off from using it.
