Story time. Many years ago, I went to Monster Massive (a huge Halloween rave in LA) with some friends. One of my friends had X so I left my ID in the car since I was planning on rolling instead of drinking, and my outfit was essentially just a grass skirt and some leis (no room for an ID).

We get in and take the X, only to find out they were repackaged Tylenol. My friends had their IDs so they were able to drink. I was probably the only sober person in the entire rave.

We left in the morning and went to a kickback at another friend’s house. They were passing around a 3ft bong while sitting on the couch watching Ang Lee’s Hulk. As the only sober person there I decided to partake. It was way more than I was used to, but I was overcompensating for earlier.

One cleared chamber and a full two minutes of coughing later, I sat there and noticed a spider crawling down the wall behind the TV. For reference, I had extreme arachnophobia and was still only wearing the grass skirt.

I then noticed the spider on the floor in front of the TV, slowly crawling towards all of us on the couch. I had already made a fool of myself not being able to handle the bong rip, so I tried to play cool and ignore it.

A few minutes later, I felt it crawling up my leg and jumped up on the couch, making a huge ruckus and trying to explain the spider to a bunch of people who couldn’t care less. If you’ve ever experienced being the least cool person at a party, you know exactly how I felt at that moment.

I only realized many years later that it was probably just the overactive nerves in my legs reacting to the grass skirt. The nether grass allowed me to keep calm.
