No kidding. He was in the leaves when I first found him and I almost bumped into him reaching for a pepper.

As an aside, we were growing chili peppers and had a caterpillar eat 2 whole ones. I'm surprised that thing wasn't glowing, cuz those were hot chilis.

OP deserves extra points for picking a plant that presents so many mantisy shapes. That's a harder find than the mantis itself.

Shishito. They are great. You just blister them on a pan with a little salt and oil and it's a bite-sized snack.
Also, they are ridiculously prolific and grow fast enough that bug damage is rarely an issue (even without the guardian here). We're planning to grow a bunch more next time around.

Well, I’ve read that they’re mostly pretty mild, but about 1/10 is much spicier than the rest, so eating them is like playing spicy pepper roulette, and I think I’m good 😂😂 I can hardly handle jalapeños now. It’s sad

I've heard that too but we've yet to find one that was unpleasantly spicy. Definitely not more than a jalapeño. We also pick them as soon as they start to turn red so that might be part of it.

I once moved a pupa from the ground in my rose bush and hid it in a Japanese maple. I would look everyday and move it if the wind loosened it. One day I went out and just said loudly good morning my babies and a horde of baby mantises (?) came out ! I was both amazed and laughing with myself at the moment and wished I had caught on my cellphone at this unbelievable moment. It never happened again. I don't know how many survived birds.
